La Jolla Crossroads

This place is horrible. It looks nice from the outside but when you get in, you realize it’s very cheap. Further, we have extremely loud upstairs neighbors who pound on the floor when they walk. Even though I have complained numerous times, I was informed there is nothing they can do for me. I don’t recommend anyone who values their living environment to live in a place like this. As soon as my lease is up, I am out of here and will never look back. Note that I am not a usual complainer and am very rational about most things. I usually do not even do reviews on Unilocal but I feel that people should know what they are getting into before they sign the lease with this conglomerate. If you decide to move here, enjoy constant things breaking and just hope your neighbors aren’t inconsiderate morons.

Bottom line: extremely rude, unprofessional, and discriminatory staff. Stay away especially if you’re an international student.
I originally had seen an ad on Craigslist about a lease takeover here for a family that was moving out. After checking out the place and liking it, I went into the leasing office to ask for more information about the lease. I was led into an office by a man in his late 20s/​early 30s and since he had his own big office I assume he was up there, don’t remember his name which in retrospect I should have to call him out specifically. I told him I was interested in a lease takeover for a apartment that was 2 bedroom $ 1600 a month, and he immediately told me that he could get me a way better deal for $ 1500 — for a one bedroom. I told him I’m not interested since I want a two bedroom and I want to go ahead and discuss lease takeover for the original apartment I was interested in. And upon hearing that, his attitude changed drastically. He then proceeded to ask me if I was a student and if I had income, «you know you have to make 2−3x the assessed value to live here right?» I told him that I was still in school, but I have been renting apartments for the past 4 years and have gone through the whole process of proofing my income through my bank acc statements and supplements from my parents. And then he proceeded to tell me they don’t accept international proof of income, without me even telling him anything about my parents being overseas (which in this case was true). I then told him that all the apartments in the area have worked with international statements that are notarized and have full legality and his response was that they’ve never done that and never will because they don’t trust anything international. Okay, so as a last resort I asked him if there are other ways to proof income such as having another co-​signer or other options we have. He smirked and gave me a little chuckle and told me that he has already answered that question many times (??? This is a different question?) and that he will not be wasting anymore time with me if I can’t even understand the basic things he’s told me, and that I needed to leave right now.
I was furious and felt insulted when I left the leasing office. I grew up in California, I don’t have an accent while speaking, and I am perfectly capable understanding everything he was saying to me — only just that my parents decided they wanted to move overseas. Even if I didn’t speak English or had trouble communicating, there is NO excuse for anyone to be treated as if they were 2^nd tier humans by the leasing office. This leasing consultant clearly did not care for non native students without 3x monthly rent stable income and had the audacity to express his opinion upon potential renters. Stay the hell away from this place, especially if you look or appear any kind of foreign, unless you enjoy being insulted and laughed at. You worked hard to get into UCSD, you don’t need to take this shit from some scrawny leasing agent for being a poor student, especially if this is going to be your home for the next few years. This happened a while ago but I finally got around to writing this, I wish I called and made a complain afterwards but I don’t even remember his name. I’m warning you so you don’t have to go through the same discriminatory process that I had to go through this this company, look elsewhere because it’s not okay to live in a community where management has clear prejudice against certain people.

Worst place to live. Harassed by management many times to get maintenance issues fixed.
Had to live in mid summer without air conditioning for 1week
There lifts don’t carry the safety record.
Maintenance is hopeless and worst management.
They ask you to log call on their portal and nothing really is taken care even after several trips to the leasing office.
Totally unprofessional.
Just be cautious in dealing with leasing office.
They don’t answer phones.
There are better places to stay if you care for your money and peace of mind.

«No dogs allowed» but there’s so many dogs running around here, «No smoking allowed» but I see a lot of cigarette buds. I can’t even open my sliding door cuz of the dust and noise coming from the construction next door. We were told it’ll be completed by December 2015 but it’s not even half way done. They also said «no construction» during weekend but I hear them hammering at 6:00 a.m. on Saturdays. It’s so frustrating when you call the office, all I get is voicemail!!! One star for being so close to UTC and Freeways but that’s pretty much it (–_​-​)… very dissatisfied tenant.

My boyfriend and I have lived here for two years and overall we have had a phenomenal experience. The reviews that are left here are by people who are totally inconsiderate of all of the things the management and staff actually do when problems occur. For example my fridge and my dishwasher were beginning to have issues because they are used and I messaged Maintanence and they took care of it very quickly and efficiently. Their gym opens at 6 AM and I use it every morning and there is really no issues over there. The equipment is working great. This community is a community filled with QUALCOMM employees and hard-​working middle-​class citizens, not college students making a bunch of noise and that’s what I love most. It’s quiet at night and business oriented during the days. The management in the officealways try their best to address issues that come up because inevitably when you’re managing almost 2000 units there will be problems and the way they take care of things is stellar. I highly recommend moving into these condos

DO NOT LIVE HERE! This place is so bad I created a Unilocal account just to warn others. Where do I begin with this shit hole. We should have known from the moment we stepped foot here that we were going to have problems. The guy who gave us the tour really could not have been less interested in us. We couldn’t see the actual apt we would be staying in because of repairs but were reassured it was the exact one of the model. As we were signing lease papers the guy «helping us» kept walking into the office and talking with his friend. Wouldn’t even sit there to help explain what we were signing. We’d sign a paper and then have to wait 5 min for him to come back from his chit chat to give us the next paper to sign until we finally had to tell him how rude he was being. In the weeks leading up to our move in we tried to see the actual apt we would be moving into numerous times. Nope, wouldn’t let us. The day we moved in we found our apt is missing a large closet in the bedroom and two outside storage spaces, which was a lot of space we were relying on, and were specifically told existed. And our back patio was covered in wet paint; you would think they would have done this the day before since they knew when we were coming, unfortunately all our bikes and outdoor things sat in our living room until the paint dried.
This review is already long and this was day 1. Since then it’s been downhill. People always in our parking spot, fire alarms go off in the middle of the night and the entire building is evacuated — this is a recurring issue, usually once per month the most obnoxious sound in the world penetrates through the entire complex and hundreds of people are forced to stand in the street in their underwear like idiots until the fire department disarms the alarm… The most obnoxious fire alarms I’ve ever heard, kids jumping in and out of our balcony with no parental oversight, smokers dropping cigarette butts onto our first floor balcony, the list goes on. The neighbors are the most rude people in the world. We have a service dog, and as you might imagine, she is very well trained. One day we took her out, and another resident who wasn’t paying attention, looked up startled to see a dog who was just sniffing around, and he kicked her! I don’t go around kicking kids! Now I know what you’re thinking, contact the front office and let them know what happened so they can take the appropriate action, right? Wrong! Complained to the office and they could have not have cared less! They sincerely don’t seem to care about anything. Oh, almost forgot to mention, there has literally been someone parked in my ASSIGNED spot the last 4 days and this seems to happen all the time!!! The spot for which I paid $ 25 to reserve when I entered into my lease. I know, logical thinking would say, «call security»… Unfortunately, this place only leaves warning notes on cars and never actually follows through with their posted signage that says they tow. Unbelievable.
Safety is a whole other issue. About a month ago our upstairs neighbor held his family hostage at gunpoint, had the entire SWAT team here and had to evacuate the building. We even have a neighbor that creeps around our back patio pacing back and forth staring into our apt a few nights a week.
The only good thing about this place is the deli and the dry cleaners. The people who own both are not associated in any way with the Crossroads management. They are, quite possibly, the nicest people I’ve ever met. The deli food is unbelievable, and the service from the cleaners is top notch. The Crossroads management needs a week long course from these people on customer service.
The latest issue occurred when our mailbox and kitchen cabinet broke. It’s been at least 3 weeks. Our mail is open for anyone to take, and we’ve been told almost 5 times now they were going to fix it. Went and complained yet again yesterday (3^rd time physically going into the office to address the issue with management) each time they promised it would be complete the next day! Last night, they PROMISED it would be repaired from 9 – 11 today. Came home and 5 and guess what? That’s right! Still not done! We’ve spent over $ 100 in dog daycare so maintenance wouldn’t have to worry about our dog and it’s all been for nothing. So, I called the manager and complained, only to be talked to like a freaking child. She literally could not have cared any less. I actually recorded the conversation on my iphone and if Unilocal would let me play it back I would love to show you all what you’d be dealing with if you made the horrible decision to move into this shit hole! The only thing the office keeps saying is «we promise we’ll do it tomorrow». Can’t express how pissed I am at this place. Nothing like coming home from a long day at work to find another issue. They don’t care about anything and do nothing to fix the situation. Numerous people in the complex have terminated their leases early

I don’t live here, and I feel the need to write a review. That fact alone should say something! I was given conflicting information from 3 leasing agents, two of whom found the situation funny. When anyone says to me that there is no shady business going on, I know to run as fast as possible in the other direction. Perhaps if I wear a Chanel suit and Louboutins next time, I will be treated better. For the sake of my stress levels, I am glad there won’t be a next time.
There are plenty of other options in the immediate and nearby areas. After my experience today, I went to view a complex a few miles away that was a little more expensive, and the leasing agent greeted me nicely, answered my questions with out a smirk or an attitude, and is looking forward to having me as a resident… all while I was in my Sunday outfit (aka sweats, sneakers, and a t shirt). You couldn’t give me anything to give these «professionals» my social security number, along with other sensitive information. I don’t understand how LJ Crossroads has staff members who don’t know what gross income means!
If any of the managers from LJ Crossroads see this review, there is no need to apologize for the way I was mislead by Filmon and rudely treated by several other staff members. Given the impression I have of your employees, I am sure your apology wouldn’t be genuine, and it doesn’t do any good. Lastly, the 3 «professionals» who were speaking to me starting chit chatting and then walked away

This place is the ghetto/​the New Jack City of La Jolla. Some one tried breaking into my car. It wasn’t unusual to see windows broke out of other peoples cars. Also not unusual are warning memo’s in the elevator posted by the Apartment complex staff warning residence that someone was assaulted and be careful and aware of your surroundings. Staff and management couldn’t be much more rude or indifferent. If you don’t have a choice but to move in here there isn’t much you can do, but if you have a choice I would look else where in UTC/​La Jolla for an apartment.

I’ve just completed two years here and signed on for a third. But with very little enthusiasm other than the convenience.
Pros:
1.Leasing office and property manager have always been helpful and responsive whenever I have an issue.
2. Location is excellent and apartments are largest size in the UTC area.
3. Complimentary shuttle bus service and Richard the driver is a super guy.
4. Nice deli and mini market on the premises.
Cons:
1. Although parking stickers are required and spaces are assigned (except for clearly marked guest parking spaces), unauthorized vehicles park in reserved slots. 5 times in the last 2 months this has occurred to me.
2. Advertised as a «no pet» community for which I had to agree on my lease that I would not have a pet, the reality is there are so many dogs you’d think it’s a pet friendly community. And none of the dogs are service dogs. The excuse being any resident can have a «therapy» dog with a written note. Wonder who gets to write the note…
3. Far too many fire alarms go off in the buildings with incredible frequency…
4. Lots of noise from Judicial Drive. Friday and Saturday nights drunks yelling, or I hope they’re drunk… but I guess in a younger community this is the norm.
5. Worst of all the quick rent increases. In my case $ 100 a month increase after year one, and $ 200 increase after year two. Yet at the same time the complex is offering residents a $ 500 rebate on one month’s rent if they refer someone who signs a lease. Keep the rent increases reasonable and maybe more tenants would stay.

I would give negative stars if possible. I renewed my lease and I was promised a deep clean of the carpet since the carpet was 5 years old. This guy JESSE, who works at the leasing office called to schedule the appointment and when I told him it should be deep cleaning, he was like I don’t know that and it will be basic cleaning only. After insisting that it has been approved by the manager 2 to 3 times, then only he made an effort to find it out and said he will call me again.
When he called me again, he said your are approved for deep cleaning and your scheduled for the same. On the day of appointment for which I have to take a day off from work, the guys shows up and says it is going to be a basic cleaning, After insisting and when he made 2 – 3 calls, he is like I cannot do deep cleaning as I have work order only for basic cleaning. I have to then call the leasing office and the same guy JESSE picks up the phone. He confirms me that the work order is for basic cleaning and after telling him again and again that he only scheduled for deep cleaning and keeping me waiting for 10 minutes he approves for it.

I’ve been here 1 year and it’s not the best place, but it’s also not the worst place. What I’ve found after reading the reviews and living here is that a lot of people move here from out of town and seem to not understand the average cost of rent/​living in San Diego — it’s not cheap, these are the cheapest non-​sublet apartments you’re going to find that are close to UCSD and not actual low-​income/​subsidized housing (trust me I looked everywhere for cheaper rent that also didn’t seem like a ripoff).
So.the good, the bad, and the ugly
1) our apartment clearly wasn’t cleaned before we moved in, there were minor carpet stains and hair in the shower, stoves were gross with burned food from the previous tenant all over them… but nothing impossible to clean. Once cleaned it’s a nice apartment for the price (which is average/​low for San Diego for what you’re getting)
2) Pay attention to your lease. Your rent can increase at the end of the year (and it will, ours increased by $ 300 which is insane) if you want to renew your lease, and while they’re upfront that utilities aren’t included… utilities are done through the apartment’s subcontractors. This means trash/​sewage/​water are divided by the number of units for the whole building, no mind to individual unit usage — and all from some company in Florida that’s impossible to contact. This means that if you’re gone for a month solid you’ll still be charged $ 90 for utilities, or if you’re really conservative with water and trash you’ll be paying out your ass for someone else in the unit’s usage.
3) the leasing office is actually great. If you have problems they’re awesome and will get it taken care of — I really wish I’d contacted them sooner on a few things I didn’t think would be in their jurisdiction but they were more than happy to help on. When moving in and getting things set up too they were more than helpful. You can pay rent online too which is a huge relief.
4) in unit washer and dryer!
5) fridge/​microwave/​other appliances come with the apartment, don’t be fooled if you’re moving from elsewhere though, this is standard for San Diego. Microwave and fridge are good/​normal, but we had issues with our garbage disposal, stove, and dishwasher (and toilets) being generally shitty appliances and constantly breaking all year long. After 5 service requests for the garbage disposal for example (and maintenance not really doing anything) we FINALLY got a different guy who came in and replaced the whole thing — it was just getting old, easy. *it’s not a huge deal for most renters, but keep in mind that if appliances are barely working or working really poorly it makes a big difference on how much you like a place.
6) It’s walking distance from UTC mall, a branch of the San Diego Public Library, a nice park, a square with a CVS, WhichWhich, Postal Annex, and some good cafes (French, Vietnamese, Lebanese, pizza), and if you really want your exercise — it’s safe and doable to walk to Vons or the hospital… even at night (though as a Californian you’ll probably be driving to these places). I don’t go to UCSD but there are a few bus stops right by the apartments that go to UCSD and other areas (regular and UCSD buses)
7) The floorplans are pretty awful and I can’t believe I overlooked this walking into this place. Whoever the floorplan architect was was hired via nepotism I assume because there are so many things that wouldn’t fly in this job (I do this for a living) — shower towel rack is right behind the shower door so the shower door opens up onto the towel rack risking breakage and definitely keeping you from getting a towel, random excess of space in areas that don’t make sense but then not enough space for basic furniture in main areas, lamp hanging right outside of the kitchen indicating a spot for a table… but any table would block entry to the kitchen, etc.
8) A lot of comments are upset about pets and… I can understand them. Like all housing in California service animals (actual service animals, ESA pets are under slightly different laws) can live anywhere for free. I have a service animal for epilepsy and man can I tell you none of these other pets are actual service animals.
9) gym is awesome
10) there will never be guest parking because they don’t offer to buy an extra spot for tenants (plenty of spaces in gated lots) and all these extra cars fill up the guest parking.
Overall it wasn’t that bad here.

I wish i could give negative stars on thier customer service and thier arrogant approach to customers!!! Seems they are least interested on filling up the apartments!
It has been 4 years since we live here, but recent experiences with the staff has made us really unhappy! Absolute no co ordination amongst the leasing office staff! Their rudeness exceeds the aparment s rent prices! It feels sorry to rate the aparments this bad just because of one person!

I have been living here for 3 years, it’s close to UTC Westfield mall, a community library, and recreation center. Also it’s close to my husband’s workplace, great location !
For the apartment itself, it has washer and dryer inside your own apartment, which is better than other communities only with shared/​coin laundry.
Also, sales representative Raquel is very professional and helpful, which adds my review to 4 stars.
Only complaint is that they raise your rent year by year, especially this year 2015, the rent is increasing dramatically. If I cannot renew the lease with an affordable rate, I am considering moving out.

Overpriced, poor management, bad pool water, BBQ is not clean. Not secure, saw many times homeless moving in corridors. You should have very strong reason to move in here.

I absolutely hate living here.
They do whatever you want for you to sign a lease, but after the lease is signed they do not do anything for you.

To be honest, this apartment complex doesn’t even deserve any stars and this is why:
1. No smoking is allowed anywhere on the property, which is fine but when we are out on our patio people complained about us smoking. Which we are not doing, but yet we have security guards knocking on our door telling us that people are complaining about smoking… twice this happened.
2. People do not know how to read signs about throwing their garbage down the chute. So they leave it there and the entire hallway smells like a dead animal.
3. There are 4 pools that are always filled with children unsupervised, running around and diving into the pool. Mind you the deepest end is only 5ft.
4. They tell you that you can’t have pets but all I see are dogs and cats everywhere.
5. You pay a ridiculous amount of rent but you have to pay separately for the electric, sewer, trash and water.
6. Too many drunk college kids in this building!
7. The stairs are not near an elevator, it’s like a hunt to find the staircase.
8. You have to pay for a sticker to park your car but if you buy a new car, you have to pay for a new sticker.
9. Maintenance takes for ever to fix something in your apartment. It took them 3 months to fix a light in the apartment. One time we had a bad leak and it took them a month to fix it. I had to complain since I’m the one who is paying for the water bill!
10. If you use the gym and you work out with a guest you brought with you and you’re helping your guest on their form or counting out reps, the staff will tell you stop because personal training is not allowed. Seriously???
11. None of the doors are locked, you get this stupid key but there’s no point of having it since you can access anywhere in the building for the exception of the main building where the office and gym is located.
12. I had a package at the front desk but I didn’t get a notice that it was there.
13. There are hardly ever any guest parking spots available. I always see people from other buildings parking in our guest spots!
This list can go on but my fingers are tired from typing!
For the love of god, don’t move here! It’s cheaper and nicer at other complexes!!!

In terms of actual space, the layout for the two bedroom two bathroom apartment is great. Giant bathroom, but below average kitchen space. The tub is not made for tall people (maybe it ok for really skinny tall people). Try to get the top floor as you can hear people walking if they are stompers or spastic toddlers from hell.
Three majors cons:
Elevators sometimes don’t work (35%) and you cannot access the lowest parking lot floor by stairs (that has to be some sort of violation).
There a very few guest parking spots and they are generally already filled (ok if you don’t have friends)
Getting packages suck!(Disclaimer: I’m bitter about this) Twice amazon has said they delivered and yet there is no package. Currently you get your packages at the leasing office which is only open from 9:30AM to 5PM (when most people are working). They do have a workaround which is emailing or calling the property managers and asking them to leave it with the gym attendant. The managers seem so helpless when you talk to them, but really they need to have a better system in place.
Overall this is an ok place to live if you can find workarounds for the three cons above.

I am writing this review only to commend the 5-​star work of BRUNO GARCIA. To be honest, we were very stressed and overwhelmed with how hard it was to reach the leasing office on phone and how 10 different leasing agents were giving us different answers. Bruno was the most genuine and helpful person who SINCERELY cared about us. Not only did he answer all our questions promptly, but actually made us feel like we mattered when other agents were impatient with us.
Looking to live at Crossroads? You’d better go through Bruno to save you a bunch of headache!
