Dr Melin, Stacy and Nicole are awesome! Dr Melin delivered both of my kiddos and was amazing! My wife loved her and her wonderful personality!

I am in the health care industry. I am a nurse. Needing to recently have a little gynecological surgery, I expected to have a perfectly adequate experience However, Dr. Melin made it highly tolerable and even a great experience. She was organized, informative, communicative, kind, and effective. She checked on me multiple times pre and post and generally made sure I was good. I feel so grateful to know her and to have had her as my surgeon extraordinaire!

While Unilocal is helpful for consumers, I hope that potential patients see past some of the reviews that this office has sadly received. As a long time patient, I can tell you that Dr. Melin (along with Nicole and Stacey) were able to diagnose and treat two pretty serious medical issues that were missed by my primary care provider.
Look…I don’t know what happened with other patients, nor do I want readers to think that I am dismissing anyone’s point of view. However, I do want to impress that I have been a patient at this office for almost a decade and for good reason. My primary care doctor (who has since been replaced) missed a couple of key medical issues. Thankfully, Dr. Melin was not only able to order proper labs, but successfully performed surgery. The other issue made way for an endocrine specialist. Her ability to talk with me candidly (and without judgment) about medications and health issues made it easier for me digest. I have since kept my health in check. She has always had the most patience with me during visits. I have never felt rushed or judged. And, she always makes sure all of my questions are answered before I leave the office. I definitely feel like I have a friend in her… as with other gals in the office. You will be hard-​pressed to find a more knowledgable and attentive physician. This is SO important for women. I have referred her to my family and closest friends who continue to have their health needs served at this practice.
Finally, I think it is worth mentioning that while I am in the waiting room, conversations with Nicole and Stacey are typically upbeat and funny. I was pretty shocked about some of the comments that were made about them. It seems pretty sad that people feel it relevant to shred others because of their perception of that person’s demeanor. I would get it if they mixed up your health records or submitted a bill to you for procedures that were never performed. If its a personality clash. probably best to move on… I truly hope that everyone finds their «Dr. Melin» and don’t forget, we are all human.

It’s with mixed emotion that I am breaking up with this practice. Dr. Melin has helped me a lot but I do expect to be treated kindly and respectfully by the front office. It’s simple abuse, really. On one hand Dr. Melin’s loyalty to her staff is admirable, but as a patient you still are the ‘customer’ and as such the poor attitude/​rude behavior is not tolerable. A simple question doesn’t warrant a coarse and terse response no matter how silly or stupid the question seems to their Royal Court of the PB Ghetto. Pair the attitude with the negative vibe — it’s time to find a more comfortable environment and set of stirrups for these legs.

After my initial OB closed her practice I was referred to Dr. Melin for what I thought was a temporary change. As heartbroken as I was that my initial Dr. wasn’t available anymore, Dr. Melin impressed me with her knowledge and experience. Having given birth four times herself, she had empathy and compassion for the whole experience. Appointments were mostly quick with very short wait times. Nicole even called me a couple times when they got over booked/​backed up to see if I would want to reschedule. Nicole also was very efficient with paperwork always ready to go from prescriptions to hospital paperwork. Her personality is a bit different from what you would expect, but at least she has a personality!
Dr. Melin accommodated me at Sharp Mary Birch even though her preferred hospital is Scripps Mercy. She stayed with me through very difficult parts of my natural birth and did everything in her power to make sure I had the birth I wanted. An «on-​call» Dr. would not have spent nearly as much time with me or catered to my birth plan. Without her expertise I believe there would have been a good chance of straying from my birth plan and possibly needing a c-​section. She knew just what to do and when to do it! I highly recommend Dr. Melin and her staff, and I would absolutely trust her again if I were to have another baby!

1. It was my second appointment during my pregnancy– Dr. Melin asked me how I was doing. I began to cry. I told her I had no family in the area, I was emotional, and scared. Her response: «I have two names for pregnant women; psycho-​bitch and cry-​baby. You’re both.»
2. Throughout my pregnancy, I gained 70 lbs. I know, A LOT! One month, I gained 15 pounds. Not great… again, I know. But when I weighed in at her office, Dr. Melin had this to say: «Holy shit! Emily! Well, at least you’re not the worst. The worst was 17 lbs. That lady ate a watermelon– A FUCKING WATERMELON– everyday… and she wasn’t even black!»…I left the office crying.
3. Several weeks before my due date, Dr. Melin told me that because my baby was so large, she believed I was going to need a C-​Section. She said to me: «UGH! I want to tell you, there’s NO WAY you are going to be able to deliver this baby naturally. She’s too big. You’ve gained so much weight– you keep feeding her (she laughs)…You should just stop eating now. You’re probably going to need a C-​section. AND I HATE C-​SECTIONS! They’re SO bad for the mom, and SO dangerous for the baby.»

I want to note that I delivered a very healthy baby– 9 lbs. 4 oz.- NATURALLY!
…and Dr. Melin missed the whole thing. The morning before my baby was born, after checking on me at 7am– she left the hospital and told the nurse to call her at 3:30pm. When my nurse called her and told her I was going to have this baby sooner rather than later, Dr. Melin told her to do «practice pushes» and call her in an hour. During the practice pushes, my baby began to crown. The nurse called Dr. Melin– she hadn’t even left for the hospital yet… and she told the nurse to tell me to WAIT! My baby’s head was coming out of me– and she wanted me to WAIT?!? I tried waiting– it was the hardest thing I have ever done… it was incredibly painful and difficult. Finally, after my family and I demanded another doctor– my baby was delivered at 4:20pm by a doctor I had never met before. Dr. Melin missed the whole thing. Once my baby was in my arms, Dr. Melin walked into the delivery room in a short dress and high heels. I learned from her at my follow up apt., that she «met the man she was going to marry» that night… and that is why she was late (missed) for the birth of my daughter. I never got an apology. Nothing.
I chose Dr. Melin because of proximity, insurance, and several positive reviews I had read (though I wish I had read more reviews). Once I met her, and realized that she didn’t exactly have that «bedside manner», I still stuck with her for 9 months– I thought she was supposed to be one of the best, and frankly, finding a new OBGYN at that point would have been too exhausting. I have wanted to write this review for a while now, because I think its really important for women to understand what kind of a person Dr. Melin is before choosing her. I will not be seeing Dr. Melin again. Not for regular appointments, and certainly not for my next pregnancy. I am currently in the process of finding a doctor who will care for my overall well-​being; I did not get that kind of care from Dr. Melin.
I do not write many reviews… and I have certainly never written a review this lengthy. I just felt it was important information for people to hear.

Very happy about my experience here. I am 2 weeks and 4 days away from my due date, and I received a call this morning saying that the doctor I have had through my whole pregnancy has a family emergency and will be out for several weeks, so I had to try to get an appointment with another doctor. I called Dr Malin’s office and they were able to get me in that same day. I am usually a pretty easy going person, but with this being my first child, it was a little nerve racking that the doctor I had built a relationship with wouldn’t be delivering my baby. But I have to say, everyone in Dr. Malin’s office made this a super smooth transition. She is so knowledgeable and real, and I feel so comfortable knowing that she would be the one delivering my baby. Nikki her office manager up at the front was great as well, took care of getting all my records transferred and again, made it a super smooth transition! I think this may have happened for a reason, because I will defiantly be switching Doc’s for my future OBGYN appointments, or if I ever have another baby, this will be my doc of choice :)

I have been a patient of Dr. Melin’s for about 10 years now and it’s about time that I write a review about this amazing doctor! I only have positive things to say about Dr. Melin. I was initially referred to her by a friend after my primary care doctor told me that my ultrasound regarding excruciating uterine pain came back normal. (Frequent uterine pain is NOT normal!) Upon seeing Dr. Melin and redoing the ultrasound, she explained the reason for the pain and gave me advice on how to cope with it. I still use that advice to this day.
In addition to that initial great experience, and all subsequent yearly visits, Dr. Melin delivered both of my girls. When my husband’s insurance plan through work tried to make us switch to Kaiser, I refused because I didn’t want to trust my reproductive health to anyone else. Luckily, we were able to stay in the network that covers Dr. Melin’s services so that I could continue to see her for the prenatal care of my second daughter. She is so patient and awesome in her field, that she even allowed my older daughter to «help» during my prenatal visits with my second daughter. Besides being a fantastic physician, who tells you what you need to know in a direct (but tactful) way, she also has a wonderful personality as a person. She loves my daughters and is never annoyed when they accompany me to my appointments. Our whole family loves Dr. Melin! How many people can say that about their doctors? I actually love having her as a doctor so much, that when I had to switch my insurance, I only agreed to do so after finding out that she is covered by the new plan. I refuse to trust my reproductive health to anyone else until the day she retires and I’m forced to find someone else.
I’ve seen the reviews about Nicole and all I can say is that people need to figure out where their own bad attitudes are coming from. Nicole’s personality is so similar to Dr. Melin’s (direct, but funny) that only a person with NO sense of humor would be offended by her. Not all people in this world needs to kiss up to you, just because you decide to use their services. I haven’t had any bad experiences with Nicole in the 10 years that I’ve been going to see Dr. Melin, but I guess that might be due to the fact that I’m not a jerk who’s looking for something to complain about.
Although I have only had limited interactions with Stacey in the past couple of years (mostly over the phone, but a few times in office as well), I have all positive things to say about her too. She is a great addition to Dr. Melin’s practice.

I just realized I never said anything about Nicole and Stacy in my earlier review.
And yes, I did read the whole bunch of reviews with all the negatives. Nevertheless, personally my husband and I both never had any bad experiences with Nicole. We laugh and joke about silly things and she was never rude to us during our visits or during any calls made to schedule appointments.
As far as offices go, fancier, pretty offices with smooth talking staff sure are a charm but what really matters is whether your health concerns are addressed by a knowledgeable doctor on time. And Dr. Melin definitely is a very good doctor in our opinion.

I have visited this office once so far. I LOVE June, she is very straight forward, knowledgeable and fun. I loved interacting with her.
Unlike what others say, Nicole was REALLY nice and friendly when I walked in and walked out.

I think this is an absoulely horrible practice that treats their clients terribly.
I went in last year for a checkup and I also needed to renew my birth control pill. I told her the brand I was on and she was insistent that I try the generic version stating that «it’s exactly the same thing.» So I made the switch and it was most definitely *not the same* and my hormones went crazy until I finally went back to my original pill… not a fun experience. A good doctor should know that the generic and brand name pills are not the same thing.
At that same appointment she told me that I only need to come in for a check up every two years rather than every year, which is apparently the new standard based on my age. So one year has passed and now she refuses to renew my birth control pill stating that I am overdue for my appointment. SHE IS THE ONE WHO TOLD ME TO WAIT FOR TWO YEARS!!! Now I am unable to renew my prescription and she cannot see me for two months — and women out there know that it really messes with your hormones to go off and on the pill. Now I am forced to go off of the pill until I can find someone else who can see me, if she had not told me to wait for two years then I could have scheduled my appointment in advance and not had this issue. Even though this is their fault they refuse to help me. And I need not even mention how rude the receptionist Nicole is… just look at the other reviews… she is downright hostile.
I am truly disgusted by my treatment here and I recommend you see a different doctor. I am just trying to get a basic birth control pill it should not be this difficult.

I have mixed feelings about Dr. Melin.
The pros are: I think she is a kind, fun, interesting person with a very great personality. She will most likely ease the fears of any new, younger patient. I do feel like I could ask her anything and not be judged.
However, I do have a lot of cons:
I felt that my concerns that I had were minimized as having anxiety and that they were stupid (which I didnt feel they were stupid). And I did have something wrong with me at the time and my new OBGYN was the one who addressed it.
The office expects you to know what your insurance covers and what your insurance does not cover, which most people dont know how to find this out because of course insurance is as difficult as possible and you usually need a dr.‘s office to guide you. You will have a lot more happy patients if you help with this this.
And then there’s Nicole. She is the sassy receptionist that gets straight to the point. I can deal with that. But I had a bad experience when I called ahead to get my medical records and was assured that I could just come in and get them… but when I came in she actually said she didnt have time to help me. It was pulling teeth to get her to copy 1 page in my file. And then they were MISSING the rest of my history. Where did it go? I needed that to make decisions about surgery and it was imperative to my health. And isnt the doctor’s office supposed to help you with that? Just the fact that Dr. Melin wont address this issue is very frustrating and says something about her judgement. Or maybe she just doesnt care. But then that begs me to ask if she really cares about me as a patient…
I also got yelled at by one of the nurses for calling my boyfriend to help answer the questionnaire they had with my health history and they told me that next time I wasnt allowed to use my cell phone. But… I’m the customer? And I wanted to answer it correctly.
I also thought the office was a little out dated and could use an uplifting coat of paint and a little more heart besides just Dr. Melin.
I’m not going back to Dr. Melin, unfortunately, but I do wish her the best.

Dr. Melin is the best doctor I have ever had — dedicated, knowledgeable, personable, personal, patient, thorough, up-​to-​date, sincerely interested in her patients, and someone who just goes above and beyond for you. She’s been my doctor for over 20 years. Nicole has been with her that whole time — so she’s not going anywhere. (Who would hire her?) But it was cathartic to read all the comments of others who have had nothing but negative experiences with Nicole. Because I couldn’t agree more.
It used to bug me (sometimes it still does) but now I find it kind of hilarious and try to predict all the ways she’s going to try to make me miserable. She always nails every single one and surprises me with bonus moves. If she wasn’t born negative, cranky, and absolutely miserable, she has certainly perfected it to an art form. But, she’s the gatekeeper to Dr. Melin, so I just summon up all the patience I can muster when I have to deal with her. She doesn’t have it in her to treat people well; she’s only got one gear; and you’ll experience it anytime her lips are moving. If you can roll with being treated poorly to get to see an outstanding physician, great — if you don’t have thick skin or tend to take things personally, you probably shouldn’t try to walk the gauntlet of hot coals necessary to do so. 5 stars for Dr. Melin; zero stars for Nicole. Average = 2.5

Dr. Melin is an angel! She really is my guardian angel. She looked out for me during the toughest time in my life when I was losing my baby at 19 weeks. I could never repay her back.
I would still see Dr. Melin despite her receptionist, Nicole. OMG so rude, and so condensending! She talks to you as if you she’s doing you a huge favor. Please! Just do your job lady! She put me down countless times at the time when I was losing my baby and going through really tough time. If it wasn’t for Dr. Melin, I would’ve left and never come back.
I don’t hope for her to be fired or anything, but I hope in response to these reviews, she’ll adjust her attitude and talk dr. Melin’s patients better.

I appreciate Dr. Melin as a doctor and she is very kind, but my first experience with her was just okay. She talked way too much and made me feel like I didn’t know the basics of sex and protection. Granted, I am 23 years old, from Hawaii, and grew up with an OB/​GYN nurse and have worked in her office for years. I did mention that to Dr. Melin, but she still acted as if I didn’t know anything.
The bill I got afterwards was ridiculous and I know my insurance covers most, if not all of my well woman (annual) exams! I faxed them and told them what codes they should of used, one of them being that I had irregular bleeding. The receptionist called me saying that she was tired of being on the phone with my insurance company to check coverage so she hung up. She also told me that my irregular bleeding was due to my IUD so she’s not applying that code. What– what?! How can you diagnose something that I only had a hunch about?!
I’m not going back to Dr. Melin and I’m currently looking for a better OB/​GYN physician with a professional receptionist. If anyone knows of any then let me know. Thanks.

I would like to have seen the apparently very well-​regarded Dr. Melin for a consult, but a doctor is only as good as the receptionist you have to wrangle with to get an appointment. I could not get past the notorious Nicole to even see Dr Melin. I called to set up an appointment for a GYN consult, per my primary physician’s recommendation after results from a routine exam. The receptionist insisted on telling me what procedure I would need, which is something only the Dr. can determine after seeing my test results. She said, «Oh the doctor ALWAYS does this» — which I know is not true for other doctors because there are at least 3 common treatment options that my primary at UCSD medical center told me about.
After making an appointment for said procedure («well if she doesn’t need to do it she can decide then») I asked about coverage under my insurance plan. It is a state/​federal plan for individuals who cannot get coverage elsewhere due to a pre-​existing condition, and the receptionist was not familiar with it (until she changed her story later). Under this plan you can see any doctor you choose, they pay the doctor according to a fee schedule, and then bill the patient for a % of the costs. (A traditional 80 – 20 type plan, which does not have a physician network, preferred provider list, or list of specialists.) It is a nationwide, U.S. Dept of Agriculture plan readily accepted by hospitals and major medical groups in San Diego. However, I was told that Dr Melin will not take any patients that she is not listed as a provider for. If that’s true, it means she would not take any insurance that is not a Managed Health Care plan (HMO or PPO). And that would eliminate the traditional (and usually most expensive) health plans in which you can choose any doctor and pay a straight % of the cost. When I pointed this out I was just rudely told that Dr Melin doesn’t take my plan because they’d tried it before. (Now she’d heard of it).
I don’t know what the story really is (perhaps Dr. Melin has a policy against plans tied to Medicare reimbursement rates?) but I did not get the impression I was getting any kind of straight answers from the receptionist. And if I was, then she is abysmal at conveying information clearly and politely. I also very much disliked having the receptionist try to replace the doctor in evaluating what procedure I needed. I was hoping to find a GYN closer to home in a private practice, but now I’ll happily stick to UCSD Medical’s Women’s Health Center which is run in a professional manner. (And yes, when I called for an appointment they said «yes, what you need first is an office consult to determine what course of treatment is best».)

Dr. Melin is an ANGEL! I love her. She was there for me when I was losing my baby, and she got me through it like no other. She truly cares about her patients, unlike many many other doctors I’ve seen.
She calls you for every blood work, and explains things to you with a great deal of knowledge, and makes you feel comfortable talking to her as if she’s your friend.
The reason why I gave 4 stars is Dr. Melin’s receptionist, NICOLE. WOW! How rude is she!!! She is condescending, belittling, bitter, and demeaning. I will call asking about some pain I’m going through, and she’ll say, «so? That’s normal». Really? Who are you to tell me that. You cannot give me a medical opinion without asking the doctor you work for. I can go on and on, but you get the picture.
The bottom line is, I’ll still go see dr. Melin no matter what, but I really hope that her receptionist fixes her ways. Dr. Melin needs a receptionist who can match her personality, not the opposite.

I called Dr. Melin’s office today to see if she was seeing new patients and Nicole said she was beginning to take appointments for next month. Nicole was VERY nice and knowledgeble. I’m really looking forward to meeting with Dr. Melin as my husband and I begin our family planning.

Dr. Melin is AWESOME! Her genuine care and expertise came through on every visit. Delivery was amazing too. Our baby came two months early and she was comforting and straightforward throughout the entire process. Her assistant Nicole is amazing too — she’s super professional and very kind. Thanks Dr. Melin and Nicole! If we ever have another baby — you’re the one :)
