Mingei International Museum preserves and exhibits folk art, craft and design from all eras and cultures of the world. Mingei celebrates human creativity, and the belief that everyday object and materials that often serve a useful purpose can also be objects of beauty. Art can happen anywhere… in any culture, in any place, created by any person.
Mingei International presents dynamic, changing exhibitions that highlight the creativity and skill of artists unknown and renowned, local and international. The Museum also events, lectures and artist craftsman demonstrations. The popular museum store offers unique handmade items from around the world and features monthly trunk shows with local artists.
History
Established in 1978.
Mingei International Museum is dedicated to the appreciation of art of the people (mingei) from all eras and cultures of the world. The collections comprise over 20,000 objects from 141 countries. Located on the Plaza de Panama in Balboa Park’s historic House of Charm, the Museum has several exhibition galleries, museum store and reference library.
