We are a consignment shop specializing in unique and interesting furniture and home furnishings. We are a small shop so we like to keep inventory moving with low prices and a fresh look with each time you visit. We offer 60-​day consignment terms paying 45−55% of the selling price. We pride ourselves on creating an esthetically beautiful that inspires you! Come by and visit us Tuesday– Thursday noon — 5pm, or call and make an appointment. We reserve Mondays to make in-​home consignment visits should you have a few items to consign. Thanks for visiting us on Yelp… we hope to see you soon!

History

Established in 2011.

Rare Bird Consignment House is the culmination of 10 years of furniture and retail experience, Interior Design experience, and the growing resale/​consignment industry. We believe that good design, esthetics and quality craftsmanship should not be sacrificed when working with a small (or next to nothing) budget! Not to mention… reusing and upcycling is the ultimate GREEN choice. We have items for $ 2-​$ 12,000. We have access to world vendors, auctions, estate sales, manufacturers ‘seconds’, antiques and neighbor’s treasures. One man’s ‘junk’ truly is another man’s treasure!

This review is specifically for Kelly Kraus’ interior design services. I am a long-​time fan of the store and Kelly’s amazing taste, so when I had the chance to employ her to help design the lobby of my workplace (an elementary school in La Jolla), I jumped at the opportunity! This was no easy task — our lobby has to be welcoming to prospective families, showcase important information for families, have seating for adults AND kids, be incredibly DURABLE, all while reflecting the school’s values and educational philosophies. AND Kelly had to meet with the important stakeholders, all of whom had differing opinions. And did I mention the budget was tight as well? Well, you wouldn’t know that the task was tough, as Kelly quickly delivered a plan and worked with us to make sure it met our needs. Long story short: Kelly has the uncanny ability to encapsulate the essence of a place and translate it into furnishings and lighting. You will not go wrong utilizing her services.

A eye is rare to find but the owner lady working 11−07−15 indeed has an eye.
Term of major compliment in art world to say «you have an eye (s)»!
In this case the unique items all put together would take such an eye! As picking consignments then selecting spot to create such great décor taste is achieved at Rare Bird Consignment House!

French say «talk of prices so gouache» yet Jewish blood runs deep in my ancestor lines so Oui, price is part of purchases! Tres bien prices!

Yikes. Went here with my husband recently (yes, married gays!). Location is a charming bungalow. Prices are high, even for Mission Hills and the overall vibe was bland– the sort of décor you might see in a moderately priced hotel in the late 90s. They say there’s no accounting for taste, if there was, I’d say they used the same accountant as Bernie Madoff.
The woman in charge was not friendly at all, though we arrived in a good mood, asking many questions. I was later surprised to learn that this employee was actually Kelli the owner. I’d say that most of her customers were older women, who she tried to engage, though the two gays ready to furnish a big house were mostly ignored. In the end, I can’t say for sure if she was a homophobe or just a nasty person.

there is something magic about this place. Go see if you can find «Vidal in Venice» there and you will also be noticing an air conditioned room in this converted Mission Hills bungalow that whispers all of her secrets. The tri-​votive holder we bought illuminates our entrance now and welcomes visitors at sunset for our Jupiter Quatro book study in OB. The lithographs and glass-​based lamp and every little highlight of someone’s life that actually made it past this curator named Kelly will save you days of hunting. This is her gift to San Diego, since 2011, that raises property values all the way to our bungalow in Ocean Beach.

One of the best stores in San Diego. The prices are fair and things get marked down frequently. The furniture is great and I love living with it. The décor pieces: the same! It’s like a grand flea market but in a boutique fashion and way beyond upcycling or vintage pieces as you’d think of them. There are cozy corners everywhere, put together with the owner’s fantastic eye. It never looks the same two times in a row and you will always find something to buy.

Rare Bird just keeps getting better. 5 stars but I’d do more stars if I could.
I have found one of a kind décor and furniture at RB that just are not available anywhere else. E.g. In the last few months, I’ve purchased a beautiful, large 1980s gold ceramic Rams Head, an out of print fine art book, 1950s ceramics for the kitchen and the bath, and most recently, a glorious floor lamp that looks like a piece of sculpture.

I use to love going to this store because it had old vintage pieces. Not anymore, plus her prices have gone up, and very unreasonably I might add. Not to mention the owner, who use to be friendly, now seems very cold and/​or bitter. I have no idea why, just my observation. I’ve bought a ton of stuff from her, but recently went by the store and she was just plain rude, especially to a long time customer. Forget her! She lost me as a customer. Goodbye!

Such a great inventory of treasures, and from what I saw, very good prices. Why buy new at Ikea when you can get something that will last your lifetime here for cheaper?

I have been shopping with Kelly since the first week she opened. Her selection is among one of the best in the county. As an interior designer I like to source for fine previously adored furnishings that are unique and in impeccable condition and offer those items and great savings to my clients for our interior design projects. I am never disappointed and never ever seem to be able to leave empty handed whether I find a framed etching of Italy, a set of hand painted porcelain dishes or an antique buffet my clients are forever grateful with my finds. So happy that RareBird is close to my home studio which allows me to drop in often to see when new items arrive. «The early bird always catches the worm!» Bravo Kelly it’s always a pleasure to shop with you!

This is a cool spot to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon in mission hills, there are so many things to look at, and you never know what you’re gonna find!
It literally feels like you’re walking into someones beautifully decorated home. The lady working in the store was super kind, funny and patient.
Prices are a bit on the high end, but that’s to be expected from vintage items, however, I found a couple of good deals on miscellaneous items.
Over all, great items and great customer service.

Amazing interior design boutique! I had been searching online and in furniture stores for weeks looking for a particular piece and then I found it at Rare Bird. Well worth the trip from Temecula to Mission Hills. I would suggest liking Rare Bird on Facebook, since they update their profile with pictures of new arrivals often. The Owner was extremely helpful, but not intrusive and very knowledgable. You must visit this eclectic shop if you have sophisticated taste or are just looking for a one of a kind or hard to find item. Most strongly recommended, I wish I could give it more than five stars.

This is truly a great find in Mission Hills. The cottage house setting is full of carefully selected treasures evoking the warm feeling of being in a familiar place.. Kelly has a great eye and her selection of items is second to none. Every item conjures up memories from the past and you’re sure to find something to take home, big or small!

A true gem of a shop tucked away in a quiet, charming neighborhood in the Mission Hills business district. Filled with tons of vintage and unique decorations and furnishings, and it seems like there are always new things coming in. Even though the prices can be eyebrow-​raising (there are a lot of antiques, after all), I still manage to find great deals on offbeat random items like vintage soda bottles, beautiful picture frames, and containers made out of recycled materials. Last time I was there, I even saw an old ouija board and a collection of intricately hand-​carved wooden pipes for sale. Customer service has always been pleasant. It is always worth stopping by for a gander!

Wow! My husband and I stopped in for a quick visit to check the shop out and drop off some consignment items. Terms are fair and it was super easy to get set up with a contract. There were so many things I wanted to haul out with me but I was there to unload from my super cramped apartment, not add more. I’m sure at some point I will have to break down and spend some money though, I do have some gift giving to do and I plan on checking back in soon!

Stopped by after ogling merchandise on the Facebook page for awhile. We’ve moved to a new house & it’s still not clear what we need, so hard for me to pull the trigger and purchase something. Lots of great stuff here, though. Furniture, art, housewares… antiques and stuff with a modern edge. Kelly was very friendly and low-​pressure and her daughter is charming and eager to tell all about their business. I wish I lived closer, it’s one of those places you want to stop by frequently to see what’s new.

Every time I walk into Rare Bird, there is a surprise. You never know what new, interesting piece will be waiting there. A taxidermy fox, a neat mid-​century ottomans, comfortable, stylish chairs, antique books about art or tarot… all to be found at Rare Bird.
Kelly has a real gift for choosing just the right items. Her shop is filled with eclectic, well made, beautiful furniture and accessories.
Stock turns over rapidly, stop by often!
Oh, and the house that the store is in is a real treat.
