Dr. Robert Ferdowsmakan is the founder and director of Torrey Hills Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He began the practice with the philosophy of providing the highest quality of surgical care to each of his patients in a comfortable and safe atmosphere. Today after almost 9 years in practice Dr. Ferdowsmakan continues to provide that same high level of care to his patients and is constantly striving to improve the patient experience. Dr. Robert Ferdowsmakan is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Dr. Ferdowsmakan is one of the few double degree Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in San Diego County. He attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine where he received his dental degree. He then received his medical degree from the prestigious UCLA School of Medicine. He completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at UCLA Medical Center which included a General Surgery internship. Dr. Ferdowsmakan is certified to provide outpatient General Anesthesia.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan regularly donates his time to charities like Fresh Start Surgical Gifts where he treats children and young adults with congenital and acquired facial deformities.

Had Dr. Ferdowsmakan handled the removal of my wisdom teeth over ten years ago. I just recently visted him on a consult for another issue. Unfortunately, Unilocal was not a tool I used back then and never got a chance to write a review. All I can say is Dr. Ferdowsmakan is awesome! He and his staff took really good care of me and surgery was a breeze and I was back work the next. Highly recommended! –Todd

This review is way past due, but I had such a positive experience and recovery so I figure better late than never!
I had 5 wisdom teeth removed in June of 2015. The entire staff from the ladies at the front desk, Dr. F and his assistants were SO kind and reassuring. This was my first time undergoing anesthesia so I was very nervous but I could not have asked for a better experience. Dr. F answers all of your questions and you can tell he knows what he’s doing/​loves what he does.
The ladies at the front desk were knowledgeable and explained to me the estimated costs and various options for surgery.
Surgery went well. Just do as the Doctor says. Take the antibiotics, remain NPO and definitely fill your pain prescription before surgery cause once the anesthesia wears off. You do not want to be sitting in a crowded pharmacy waiting for your script.
I had my check up appt within a week (I believe) and I felt Dr. F genuinely cared about my recovery. The holes in my mouth closed in about a month or so & during that time, the syringe they give you to wash out all the trapped food in those holes, was my BEST FRIEND. I seriously would advise you to not go anywhere without it because the trapped food is such an uncomfortable feeling, well for me at least.
Anyways, I would recommend Dr. F and his team to anyone!

I made an appointment to get my teeth removed. At first I was not insured because I needed to be enrolled in school full time for my insurance to go through, so I rescheduled and set my appointment for a later date giving my insurance time to kick in. The date of my surgery comes, I take the antibiotics and head over to the office, once I get there they gave me paperwork to fill out that required personal financial info. AFTER I turn the forms in the girls at the front desk tell me that my insurance still hasn’t gone through. I ask if I can make payments and they say you have to pay up front. Who has $ 2,000+ to pay up front?! I’m pissed because if my insurance still hadn’t gone through why didn’t they call or email me days before so I could come prepared or reschedule??! Instead I woke up early, took medication I didn’t need to take, filled out forms I didn’t need to fill out and had my boyfriend show up late to work for no reason at all. So frustrating. I’ll be scheduling somewhere else.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan is one of the nicest dentists I’ve come across and I’ve been to many dentists in my life. I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted from him. One was 3 years ago and the remaining 3 in one sitting recently. Dr. Ferdowsmakan has nice hands and he and his team will make sure the procedure is of minimal discomfort to you. We started and finished right on schedule — no waiting (for any of my appointments actually). Dr. Ferdowsmakan personally called me a few hours after the surgery to make sure I was doing ok — I don’t remember any of my doctors/​dentists personally calling their patients. I have to say my recovery was rather slow and painful (because of the nature of my teeth) but Dr. Ferdowsmakan made sure he and his team did all they could to make me feel as comfortable as possible. He was kind enough to see me multiple times even after my surgery to ensure I wasn’t in pain. He fixed my dry socket and was happy to see me whenever I wanted to get it replaced or checked. Overall 5 stars to him and his team.

I just got my wisdom teeth removed on Sept. 24, and I am so happy Dr. Ferdowsmakan did my procedure. The idea of having any type of surgery frightened me, so I kept putting it off. However, after I met Dr. Ferdowsmakan and got to know him more, I became very comfortable with him because he is very knowledgeable and is truly an expert at his craft. Dr. Ferdowsmakan is highly recognized for his work in the community, and I love the fact that he works with kids. Additionally, Dr. Ferdowsmakan’s calm demeanor is so soothing and reassuring.
When I came into surgery, I was a little nervous but was confident I was in good hands. Dr. Ferdowsmakan and his Surgical Assistant Marguerite talked me through the entire process. They were so kind and supportive, regardless of whether I felt silly for being scared of such a common procedure. Although I couldn’t remember much, I was so relieved a top-​notch doctor like Dr. Ferdowsmakan did my wisdom teeth removal.
After surgery, Dr. Ferdowsmakan kept in touch with me and reassured me that I could contact him anytime in the event I run into any issues or if I have any questions. I really like the fact that he cares about his patients checks up on them. Although I did have a number of questions, Dr. Ferdowsmakan never made me feel bad about asking and asking. He’s so kind and respectful, and would recommend him to any of my friends and family.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan and his staff are excellent! I was informed by my dentist that I would need an extraction followed up with a dental implant for one of my teeth. He referred me to 2 different oral surgeons. After meeting with Dr. Ferdowsmakan, I knew that he was the oral surgeon for me. He has such a kind and patient disposition and the best bedside manner. I suffer from «dental anxiety» and as soon as I met with him, he put my mind at ease. He answered all of my questions (I had a ton of them) and he didn’t rush me. He also could sense my apprehension in having to undergo oral surgery and he reassured me that the surgery was not going to be as bad as I thought it was going to be. He was absolutely right. Dr. Ferdowsmakan and his staff were efficient, communicative, accommodating, and comforting. Overall, I am so impressed by his practice and I believe that he is the best oral surgeon in San Diego!

Amazing doctor and staff ! I had double jaw surgery and just finished my recovery and couldnt be happier, my new bite is fantastic. They have been great from beginning to end and ive been seeing him since june 2014. Dr. Ferdowsmakan was always available when I had questions and I have never felt rushed in my appointments, he took his time to explain everything to me and always made sure he answered all my questions.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan and his staff are the best. I had my wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Ferdowsmakan last month and I had a wonderful experience with him. I was so nervous about having them removed because I remember my mother getting dry socket when she had her wisdom teeth removed. I opted to have General Anesthesia for the procedure since I had 4 completely impacted wisdom teeth and it was the most efficient (well to me it was… b/​c I don’t remember being knocked out. HAHA) procedure. I had no issues coming off the anesthesia (no nausea or anything). It’s been almost a month now and they’re healing up nicely. I would definitely recommend Dr. Ferdowsmakan for anyone who needs their wisdom teeth extracted.

Customer service sucks! Yes, he calls you that same day after surgery but doesn’t follow up after that even if you had complications or life changing events because of surgery.

I am highly impressed with Dr. Ferdowsmakan. I had several consultations before deciding to have Dr. Ferdowsmakan do my dental implant surgery.
I am young and unfortunately had some trauma to a tooth which required it to be extracted, to be followed by an implant.
Dr. Ferdosmakan was patient with me each step of the way, even when I had an emotional breakdown following the extraction. His staff is also super nice and friendly. Dr. Ferdowsmakan was so calming and soothing and made me feel so comfortable that I was in the right hands. He sincerely cares and it shows.
I have no complaints and am so relieved to have found Dr. Ferdowsmakan and his staff.

I was in so much pain when I finally decided to search for a good oral surgeon to get rid of all my wisdom teeth. I called them and they instantly got me a schedule. When I went in for an x-​ray and consultation about what needs to be done I have to say they were all really nice and accurate with information with me. They got me an appointment for the next day which was another plus!!!
When I finally went in to get my wisdom teeth taken out I have to say that I was really nervous and didn’t know what to expect but they took real good care of me. I got my choice of falling asleep during the procedure which really helped a lot. I was in a little pain but nothing that I didnt already feel before I got my wisdom teeth out. This is my second day and wow am I happy. I do not regret going here. They are very amazing at what they do. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO READ THE PAPER THAT THEY GIVE YOU BEFORE THEY ASK YOU TO GO IN FOR THE OPERATION IT DOES EXPLAIN THINGS THAT YOU MAY FEEL AND THING THAT CAN HAPPEN AFTER GETTING THE PROCEDURE DONE. You can tell by their rating that they are really good at what they do. Except for one rating but we all have our own thoughts and opinions. Again there wasn’t anything the left out because it was written on paper things to expect.

Surgery went well! I got all four wisdom teeth removed by Dr. F! He was amazing, professional, and friendly. He even called my on a weekend to check up on me. My cheeks got swollen after surgery which is pretty typical.

My daughter first went to Dr. Ferdowsmakan in July 2013 to have a baby tooth removed, and a procedure done to help pull the impacted permanent tooth into place (an expose and bond). We were referred by our orthodontist, and are so glad she sent us there. Dr. Ferdowsmakan was patient and professional and explained things so well, he made my daughter feel less nervous about the procedure. The staff is awesome too. After the procedure, he called personally the following day as others have mentioned in their reviews.
We had to go back this week because the bracket on the permanent tooth came loose, and so the procedure needed to be redone. Dr. Ferdowsmakan took care of it at no charge, and was so friendly and helpful. He again called personally to follow up, and worked with us to ensure that my daughter has the right pain medication. You can tell he really cares about his patients.
What tells me how great he is was hearing my 14 year old tell her sister that if either of them need their wisdom teeth out she wants to go to Dr. Ferdowsmakan. He took the fear out of things for her, which is huge! Can’t say enough great things about him and his staff!

After seeing the reviews here, I went to get my four wisdom teeth pulled out by Dr. Ferdowsmakan. I must say he and his team are great!
I got local anesthesia and was very nervous at beginning of surgery, but it gone very quickly. I was awake during the whole surgery and I did not feel any discomfort. Dr. Ferdowsmakan is very thoughtful and careful. The surgery went really good.
The healing process is event better. I picked up the painkillers but never ate them. I prepared for the pain after the anesthesia gone, but to my surprise, NO PAIN at all, and not even swelling !!! Now it already 5 days, I never felt any pain and no swelling all the time.
It is a really good experience, I have already recommended him to my friends.

Dr. Ferdosmakan removed my wisdom teeth three days ago and I’m pretty much all healed.
He is very competent and concerned with his patients. I was having trouble picking up my antibiotics and painkillers from the pharmacist, but I was able to reach him via pager within 10 minutes and resolve the whole problem. The operation was painless as far as I can recall, and I’m healing with no infection, swelling, bruising, discoloration, or even real discomfort.
Definite recommendation!

Dr. Robert was my oral surgeon for about 3 years and 4 surgeries. I had to have dental implants done which was complicated by the fact that it was due to being born missing two permanent teeth, therefore I had very little to no bone density in the front of my jaw.
He removed my wisdom teeth in the first surgery, and it was as good of an experience as that can be. The anesthesia worked perfectly, he took the time to answer all of my questions about that and my other future surgeries, and really made the effort to get to know me.
My first bone graft (2nd surgery) didn’t take partly because I didn’t let my body take enough time to heal right off the bat. I had to have a second one done 7 months later, which Dr. Robert did completely free of charge because he doesn’t charge for subsequent bone grafts. This included anesthesia. This experience showed me that he’s not in the business for only the money.
My fourth and final surgery was the dental implant one (basically two screws into my jaw). He was more attentive to my needs and reservations than my dentists were, and again the surgery healed perfectly (I learned my lesson the first time).
Dr. Robert always called the night of the surgery day to check in on me as well as a week later to do so again. He returned calls with questions the same or next day even when I called on Christmas Eve because a stitch came out (again, my fault for not resting my mouth) I would never think of seeing anyone else for oral surgery and HIGHLY recommend him!

Staff was very nice helpful and informational. They have a separate insurance biller who specifically works with your insurance to figure out the best price brackets for you .
I would highly recommend the full anesthesia because you are awake one minute and out the next!
Dr F was not pushy at all. Gave very good information about the whole procedure. You can just tell he is a very down to earth doctor who isn’t just out to get your money. He seemed very available in case of anything that happens after your teeth are pulled.
Looks like im going to have to come here too!

I had Dr. Ferdowsmakan remove all four of my wisdom teeth in one go. I was to be under anesthesia and completely knocked out for the entire procedure, thank god. There was actually a slight complication with my back teeth because they were growing in horizontally, which made me very nervous but the Dr. helped comfort my nerves and reassured me that it should pose no additional risks of infections or anything.
Seeing as how dentists terrify me and I have a low threshold for pain. I felt as though I was a death row inmate walking to the chair when I went in for my surgery. I was very nervous but his assistant was very friendly and understanding. She even held my hand as I loosened up with laughing gas (I know I’m a big baby), then had me count backwards from 10 as I began dozing off. I don’t remember even getting to 8 before I was completely out. When I awoke I was very groggy but had one of my good friends there to drive me home. Dr. Ferdowsmakan’s assistant wheeled me out to the front of the building in a wheelchair, which was great because I probably couldn’t take 5 steps on my own.
They gave me a prescription for meds and first stop after my procedure, the pharmacy. Of course, I anticipated great pain in my near future so I wanted to make sure I was stocked up. But it turns out I barely even took any pills. I used some of my hydrocodone to help with the pain in the first 2 – 3 days after the surgery, but after that I was fine. The swelling was very minimal and only noticeable during the immediate days after surgery.
I went in for a 2 week follow up and my wounds were healing up great. I was also given a plastic syringe to clean out food particles that may fall into the grooves that were still closing up. Of course I had researched all sorts of things that could go wrong with wisdom teeth extraction but I was reassured that I was doing great and simply to continue with a diet free of crunchy foods with «sharp» edges (like chips).
I’ve heard of some really terrible wisdom teeth stories, but luckily that’s not how my experience panned out and I give Dr. Ferdowsmakan a lot of credit for that!

One wouldn’t typically use the words ‘pleasant’ to describe wisdom teeth extraction, but thanks to Dr. Ferdowsmakan and his staff, I felt this was a really nice and easy, oral surgery.
When we first met, he took the time to answer all my questions and at the end of the appointment, the staff had all the procedure prices ready to show me. No hidden fees, all the prices were right there and it was pretty affordable, which was really, really great. I paid in advance and then booked my surgery.
For a few weeks, everybody I talked to about the surgery told me of their terrible wisdom teeth experience, with swelling, intense pain, dry socket, the whole 9 yards. And admittedly, I was nervous before the appointment.
I went under with anesthesia and had all 4 wisdom teeth removed. Afterwords, I was groggy, iced my face a lot, but for the most part, I had absolutely no pain, no swelling and was up and doing chores the next day. At the end of the day after the surgery, Dr. Ferdowsmakan called me just to see how I was doing and gave me some suggestion on how to sleep and what to eat, which was really nice. I was actually even surprised he called, no one ever does that!
I highly recommend going to Torrey Hill Oral Surgery, the office is very clean, the staff is great and Dr. Ferdowsmakan is a top notch oral surgeon.
