The San Diego Canoe & Kayak Program is a San Diego Fire-Rescue Program and an off shoot of the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program that meets weekly on Saturdays in the Fiesta Island Boy Scout Camp area. It was started in 1996 by Junior Lifeguards instructor and USA Canoe & Kayak Olympian-Chris Barlow. The program has a focus on developing youth skills in the sports of canoe and kayaking and has a stellar history of excellence with it’s team members earning spots on the Junior World Championship Teams, the Senior World Championship Teams, and even the Olympics. Generally-any Junior Lifeguard member can join the program for canoe & kayaks but the SDCKT also offers scholarships to any participants in need of assistance. The SDCKT has introduced many youths in the community to the sports of canoeing and kayaking. The students learn skills necessary to the sports such as balance, technique, sport physiology and psychology and good sportsmanship. I can vouch for the program because my son was a team member for many years and acquired a great many skills from it-useful in both sports and socially. It helps to be competitive as a member of the SDCKT — they compete in many regional races around Mission Bay. The group also participates in the yearly National Championships held in different locations around the United States. This is a great program for youth interested in the water sports of canoeing and kayaking. Chris Barlow is an excellent teacher and motivator. Your children will have lots of fun and gain great social skills interacting with both other sports-minded boys and girls. I recommend the SDCKT program highly.
