With 30 years of custom carpentry experience, LICENSED carpenter Steven K. Lewis has the knowledge and skill for any of your smaller home improvement projects, and is very reasonably priced. Whether you need one or two quality custom cabinets built, an entertainment center modified to fit your new TV, or simply to have a new pet door installed, Steve specializes in smaller projects and can get your project completed and your home back in order quickly.

History

Established in 1983.

I was licensed in 1983 as a California specialty contractor in finish carpentry. For 15 years I supplied labor to install doors and related hardware on buildings such as schools, universities, hospitals and military facilities. After that I got more into interior finish carpentry for homeowners. My present work includes handyman work related to carpentry, cabinet modification, door installations, trim installation and custom built-​ins.

I was born in Philadelphia and although I wanted more shop classes in high school I was persuaded to take academic classes. After graduation, my ability to pick up handyman and finish carpentry work helped me to get work quickly. I continued carpentry and handyman work when I moved to San Diego in 1981, starting a 15 year phase as a subcontractor to general contractors for government buildings, hospitals, schools and office buildings. After that phase I had the desire to move from such a business oriented side of construction to a more human size job of working for mostly homeowners. Now I live in Hillcrest close enough to the Zoo to hear a howling monkey. I recently completed a lifelong goal of writing a paper about a pattern and continue to think about it. I am enjoying a slower work schedule at this age and appreciate the many smaller jobs that I can take care of for people.

Seems pretty good from all the reviews. However, if you need a small job completed and you’re in North County, this isn’t your guy. The small job was to install three sliding closet door tracks, all materials had been purchased.

We were looking to have a new interior wall (framing plus drywall) with a door built in our bathroom area, along with some related work. Probably the first thing I noticed when Steve came to give an estimate for the job is that he isn’t really the flashy salesman type who exudes a ton of competence. But his Unilocal page was impressive, and his price was competitive, so we decided to hire him. Boy am I glad we did! The work he did was phenomenal, with meticulous attention to every detail. He’s been doing carpenter/​handyman work for decades and is extremely competent and professional, a true craftsman. He stayed on schedule and stuck to his estimate for the price. Plus he was a pleasure to work with. We couldn’t have been more satisfied with the job that he did. We’ll absolutely hire him again if we need other work done.

Steven installed cabinetry hardware in my kitchen and in the master and guest bathrooms and I couldn’t be happier with his craftsmanship! Additionally, he primed and painted the top of the entry door as well as caulked multiple sinks. His attention to detail, easy going demeanor, professionalism and extremely competitive rates will easily make him my go-​to carpenter and handyman for any ongoing needs. Highly recommended — very pleased!

Steven did a cabinet modification for us. He did a wonderful job from start to finish and we’d highly recommend him! He answered the phone when I called and was able to meet me right away for an estimate. His rates were reasonable and the quality was excellent! He paid close attention to detail and even advised us that one of our cabinets was not the correct size to accommodate our range hood. He really saved the day on that one! Nobody at the store that we bought it from or even our original carpenter caught that mistake. He is courteous and professional. We would definitely want to hire him again!

He was referred to me by a neighbor. I called him and explained what type of drywall services I needed. He didn’t seem like he was all there. The only thing I could make from our conversation was him declining to come do an estimate. Seriously?

Steven did an incredible job on refurbishing the front door of our home. We have an late 20’s Spanish style home with a rounded top mission style wood door. It was in dire need of some TLC when we bought the house. Steven sanded down the old faded front of the door and stained it to match the inside of the door. He also patched all the cracks and gaps that had formed. He did a perfect job of rebuilding the door frame too because prior to that our door didn’t have a complete seal because of the deteriorated door frame. We had bought the hardware for him to use in the refurbishing and he did a great job installing it all. He was prompt, friendly (albeit quiet), and clearly good at what he does. His prices were very reasonable and I highly recommend him!

Steve did some work at my store a couple years back. Steve added doors and a lock to a jewelry display I had and finished a wall display that needed some attention. His pricing was competitive and his work was great!

I called Steven on a Wednesday requesting his services for the following Monday and he said yes, he could meet me. I was thrilled as I had called a few others before him who were all booked up. I was having a problem with my tenant’s cabinet doors which had fallen off and one of the doors had disappeared with the last handyman I hired and never got returned. Steven came to the rescue and met me on time on Monday morning. He got his tools and worked in our makeshift backyard work area and within 2 hours, all my cabinet doors were rehung and a new one installed where the old one had been. I was so thankful. He is friendly and thorough and well priced. I highly recommend him!

I called on Steve to install oak baseboards in my home after we’d had some tile work done. He is a true craftsman, doing all the small things that make for quality work. The price was right, everything was done on time, and cleaned up afterwards. In this day of pre packaged schlock, it’s good to find someone who shows pride in his craft. We’ve got a bigger project planned, and I’ll definitely call Steve again on that one.

If your looking for someone who’s competitive with price and does great quality work. Steve is the guy! I needed a shelf modification done in my living room in order to fit my television and Steve came to the rescue. The end result was perfect.
I couldn’t be happier on how my shelves turned out. My TV fits perfect! I will definitively be contacting Steve again for future home installations and repairs.

We hired Steven to fix the door thresholds on 2 of our doors. We had laminate installed over tile, and the flooring guys were unable to adjust the thresholds so the doors were not sealing tightly. Steven came over to look at the doors, and was able to address the problem. He was prompt and finished within a few hours. He cleaned up thoroughly and did an excellent job. We would highly recommend him.

Steven just finished a series of carpentry jobs on my home: shelf installations, back yard sail shade installation, and some specialty cabinetmaking work. I have complete confidence in Steven’s skills, ingenuity, and professionalism. Steven arrived promptly on time for our scheduled work. His charges are highly competitive and reasonable. I wish I could give a better review… he seemed like a nice enough guy. He came to my house to check it out and when he left we set an appointment for him to come out and install my baseboards about 5 days later. A day (well, 36 hours) before he was scheduled to do the work I received an email saying he was no longer coming and that maybe he could work it out in about 2 weeks but I shouldn’t count on that. No explanation, no apology, nada.
Unfortunately I was counting on Steve to do this job and had released everyone else that had bid for it and now I’m a little bit stuck with some time constraints and getting someone else in.
If you are hired to do a job –call me old fashioned– but I think you should probably follow through with what you’ve said you’ll do. I would not recommend him to anyone as his follow through leaves much to be desired.
