Underdogs Gastro Truck

This food truck was outside the theater at a PLHS play during intermission. Unfortunately, their service was so incredibly slow that a number of patrons were left waiting for their food at the truck when the theater doors closed and the second act of the play started. I’m sure many of us would have abandoned our food orders but we had already paid the exorbitant prices for the dogs. When I asked the server if they could speed up the service he became incredibly defensive. After watching the pair in the truck working, it became clear that they had no clue how to batch orders to maximize efficiency. Ultimately, I waited over 30 minutes for a sausage, chicken strips, and fries. My conclusion was that the two guys running the truck must be related. Otherwise one would have been fired for working so slow. The food tasted ok — not near good enough for the wait or the price.

I was at the Night Nation Run in Chula Vista 4÷18÷2015 when I saw the nice looking truck and decided to get something eat. I ordered the Hop-​Along which was $ 14.
The portion I received was plentiful, however the texture, taste, and presentation was awful. My first bite into the dog seem like I couldn’t bite into the sausage link. The casing of the link is chewey, it doesn’t snap apart making it difficult to eat. Further more the temperature of the meal was not hot enough. To me it seem like it was very under cooked. Which brings me to the taste, there isn’t any. I expected a little more from a $ 14 dog. I would have given this place 2, maybe even 3 Stars if they would have replaced my meal with something else, but they did not take the liberty to when I brought it to their attention.
I tend to always root for the underdogs. But like in real life, not all underdogs have story book endings.

Checked this truck out at the night nation 5k for a pre run/​walk snack. I shared a melty mefly which was a grilled cheese with sausage, bavarian cheddar and carmelized onions on sourdough bread. It tasted pretty good for a luke warm pre grilled sandwhich. I think they may have thought they were going to get a larger crowd and premade them? Not sure about that… would have preferred to wait for a nice, fresh crispy grilled cheese.
Other then that the sandwhich was pretty tasty and good size for the price. The fries looked really good, next time ill have to try them if i come across this truck again.

We always get great food from these guys and tonight was no exception. I was so excited to see them offering poutine which is hard to find and even harder to find done well. You guys rocked it! Fabulous interpretation! Kielbasa on top of crispy, well seasoned French fries topped with house made beer cheese sauce and onions – absolutely delicious!!!

Just had the Cuban sandwich that knocked my socks off!
Great flavor, awesome pickles topped the homemade sausage and pulled pork!
Damn delicious!

I ordered the Sudden Death, which caused my mouth to almost meet its sudden demise. I can handle decently spicy foods, but this was uncomfortable hot for me. The flavor was so good that I kept trying to eat it, but started to sweat. I’m not sure if it was the habanero salsa or the jalapeño crema, or even just the hot link itself, but I pretty much chugged two pints of beer to help my mouth. Overall, it was delicious. Would I order that specific one again? No, because I am a wimp and can’t handle pain. I would without hesitation try a milder dog if I run into this food truck again.

This was waiting for susceptible beer-​heads outside of Lost abbey. Of course I was going to get sausage. What other choice did I have?
Well. The choice i had was what sausage. I had their Underdogs OG.
Bread: excellent. Buttered, soft, but crispy still. Nice french bread roll instead of a normal hot dog bun.
Sausage: Kielbasa. It was tasty-​ish. But they cut it in half to cook it faster… which I’m bummed about. It was not juicy because of this.
Plus: Lots of sauerkraut.
It was satisfying for coming fresh out of lost abbey and needing something fattening… but when I reflect on whether it was wroth $ 8… now I have doubts.

I ordered a «Freak the Greek» ($ 10): «lamb sausage wrapped in a warm pita w/​hummus, tzatziki, cucumber, tomato and goat cheese». The tzatziki was interesting, but the combination of the tzatziki and goat cheese made the sausage lunch seem too liquid and dairy-​oriented. Kosher it wasn’t! I’d say that Freak the Greek was far from the bullseye but I give these people props for trying.
There were plenty of other daring and innovative choices on the menu, which was written by hand with a white-​board pen. My friends in San Diego tell me that the menu is different each time they stop by this Gastro Truck. I’m now enough of a fan that I’ll be happy to get my lunch at Underdogs any time they show up.

Fries… crispy…Sausage with black forest ham… yummm. My first time but I enjoyed and completely finished my wonderful sausage from Underdogs Gastro Truck.
The pricing is competitive with the rest of the food trucks. I am embarassed to say that the sausage sandwich (french roll) and fries were all completely devoured. Although to avoid eating too much of the bread, I sort of ate the rest of the sausage and ham and left some of the bread to waste (too much carbs).
They do sell soda and water too but I usually take my food back to my office and drink either water or soda I already have.
Overall, there were several choices to be found in the menu. If you are in the mood for some delicious change in your food truck cuisine, try Underdogs and you will find yourself satiated as I was.
Go ahead try them out if their truck is by your office or neighborhood. And like most food trucks nowadays, available for catering too.

First off, I just wanted to say that not only does this Food Truck have incredibly good hot dogs, but I also appreciate the fact that they really love and support STAR WARS! There’s various action figures, stickers, key chains, vinyls, etc. all over the truck, which is like a little Star Wars museum and as a huge Star Wars fan, I was thoroughly impressed and more excited to order.
Ordered a «Sudden Death» dog which was absolutely delicious. I really love hot dogs and the unique twist that this food truck does to their hot dogs is awesome. I believe that in the «Sudden Death» dog, there was some type of habanero sauce which offered a really nice spicy kick, and the overall flavor of the sauce was also really delicious. My other friends got the «Sudden Death» as well and we all agreed that the sauce and hot dog as an entirety was great. This hot dog also comes with guacamole, a lot of cheese, fries, and pickles on the side!
In addition to the really cool Star Wars theme going on and the deliciousness of the hot dog, the guy who took our order was really cool too. Customer service is something huge to me and the guy was really genuine and conversational (is that even a word?). Anyway, I appreciated it a lot and that is something I really look for in a good restaurant, food truck, etc.
Overall, loved it and would definitely buy from them again!

Sprouts and sausage is amazing. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it :-9

Ok so I went to alesmith tonight after beer tasting at rougher draft cuz I knew they would have a beer truck. They were sold out of all food at 5:30. Crap! But the part that sucked was seeing the alesmith bartenders eating brats 20 minutes after they told us they were sold out. We picked alesmith because there was a good truck over white labs. Don’t throw it in our face by David your food for the bartenders! Bs! Bring more food or leave right away!!!

Totally hooked on the Johnny Appleseed and uncle Elvis! Underdogs has opened my eyes to cherry and apple sausage with sweet dishes. Never would have thought sausage would make French toast or a pb/​jelly/​banana sandwich so good.
Ive heard of the famous Cherry babomb but it has not been offered yet!
These guys are true chefs and their creations seem risky but have always worked for me. I’ll buy every week. Best truck in San Diego!

I tried their advertised special, the $ 8 «Dirrrty Dawg» which is a turkey hotlink with spicy slaw and remoulade.
The pickle on the side was the best part. Fresh and quite sour.
The interior of the hotlink was adequately lean and tender, though it was not hot at all, quite salty, and its casing was highly chew-​resistant. The slaw was not spicy; rather it seemed to be a pile of red cabbage. The remoulade contained no discernible flavor — perhaps it was simply salty, and so not detectable above the saltiness of the hotlink.
All of this was on top of – literally, ha ha – my peeve of a thin bun that has the structural integrity of a slice of toasted Wonder bread. The seam split before two bites, sending «spicy» slaw everywhere (read: the ground).
Very disappointing.

Parked outside Iron Fist when I visited, which was awesome. I had one (can’t remember name) with mushroom sauce and fried onions. Really hearty. And really messy… you need a ton if napkins… or a hose down.
It took a while for our orders to come, but they offered to being it to us inside, so no complaints!

Sudden death sauce is sooo addicting! Try it with the freak the geek! I wish they could package that sauce and replace the inferno sauce at the del taco. It would sure make my taco Tuesdays taste a lot better. Actually why not replace ALL del tacos with an underdogs truck instead? I mean there are plenty of Steves with the same great customer service to hire all over the country! I might even change my name to Steve… Thanks bros!

Enjoyed a great ‘sudden death’ dog at the RB food festival last Saturday. Spicy, filling, delish. I never would have thought to put guac on a dog… yummy! Can’t wait to try the other varieties!

I’m ½ German yet I’d never had sauerkraut. At least not until we came across Underdogs while visiting Alesmith Brewery. My husband and I both ordered the Underdogs OG and it was a very wonderful way to try sauerkraut for the first time. I’m not a big hot dog eater, and when I do, I normally leave the bun and just eat the dog. However the bread on this sausage was so amazing I couldn’t stop eating it! And their homemade and super fresh chips are delicious too. The meal was a little too much for me to finish, but that’s a good thing!
They have a very interesting menu and I’m definitely going to get another bite from them next time they pop up.

This food truck made a stop in my apartment complex and I had to try them. Based on the selection of items, the Chorrito is what appealed to me most. It contained chorizo, egg, potato, cheese and avocado wrapped in a grilled tortilla. The price was decent for food trucks ($ 7) but it was one of the the cheapest main items on the menu. Unfortunately, I wasn’t loving the taste. It was pretty flavorless and greasy and I could not finish it sadly.
Aside from the food, I do want to say that the guy taking orders was super friendly. The truck seemed clean, the people working were nice, talkative, and seemed to enjoy what they did. I would probably give this truck another chance if I saw them, but would try something different. 3 stars for good customer service and decent prices, but food that I just wasn’t feeling. To each their own–

OMG. So I decided to put my sandwich down and write this mid-​lunch, that’s how good this is. I guess I should just devour it and *then* write this review, :takes bite: but I had to have coworker bday cake at the last minute and I can’t turn down a good piece of cake so I’m somewhat full… anyway
Their truck parks near work (Walter Andersen Nursery on Pacific Hwy) most Tuesdays and I’ve eaten there three times. Each time was awesome. The «johnny appleseed» was my fav, to die for (chicken i think) sausage with applekraut on a big piece of french toast as the bun. FRENCH TOAST BUN!!! Amazing. :bite: They also gave me a free drink with that one but none since (guys, hook me up). Last time I had this sausage bread pudding something-​or-​other and that was delicious as well. Ground sausage with a tasty maple-​y glaze and some bread and yumm. Today i got «freak the greek» and it is not disappointing. Lamb sausage, feta, tomato, cucumber and hummus all on a pita. With chips (fresh probably) and a pickle on the side. :eats a chip: I’m so happy I think I’m going to save the other half for my 3pm craving snack binge.
Thanks for doing everything right, Underdogs. I’ll be back next week if you will!
