University Square Barber Shop

This place is a joke. If you’re going to be called a «Barber» shop then you should be able to perform the duties of a barber. I walked into this establishment on a Saturday afternoon only to be told one, that the only hair cutter is about go on a 5 or 10 minute lunch. Who takes a 10 minute lunch? And then she proceeds to ask what I want and I tell her a fade. Nope. Sorry. Can’t do fades. Are you kidding me? Is that not the most straight forward hair cut there is??? I’m thoroughly disappointed in everything about this business. From the way I was greeted to the quick and abrasive way I was denied a simple fade. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!

I have been to this little barber shop a few times, and I always see Josh. I normally request a very simple haircut (merely a buzz) which is something you would think that barbers would have a hard time messing up, but it happens regularly.
This establishment is family owned and they take pride in their work. They are cash only, so be prepared for that. I would recommend this place to anyone in the University City area!

SAVE YOUR TIME, FIND A DIFFERENT BARBERSHOP
Quite possibly the worst haircut experience I have ever had. I will never be coming back to this place, and I recommend that anyone who is reading this skips the trouble of finding out the hard way, heeds my advice, and never bothers coming to this awful establishment.
I went in for a routine haircut, and I asked for a 3 on the sides and a cleanup on the top. I have been getting this haircut for years, so I usually know just what to expect. The lady began to cut my hair, and it felt like she was barely taking off anything as she dragged the razor across my hair with a wrist weaker than a wet noodle. I think to myself, «Okay, I guess she is just going to cut slowly and steadily, that’s fine…» Next thing I know, she is making her way to the top and she starts cutting off tiny little bits of my hair. Then the phone rings and she walks over to answer it, and instead of taking a message or answering with some sense of urgency (seeing as she was in the middle of helping a customer), she proceeds to walk outside beyond my range of vision. I’m thinking, «Okay, well hopefully she makes it quick and comes back in and finishes my haircut???» She doesn’t. She stands outside talking on the phone for about 10 minutes, then walks back inside, takes my apron off, brushes off my neck, and asks if I’m okay with my haircut. At this point I am doing my best to hold back my increasing rage. I tell her that I’d like my hair to be shorter, and that this is most certainly not a 3 on the sides (like I said, I know what my hair looks and feels like with a 3 on the sides). She then responds by telling me that «No sir, this is a 3, I can make it a little shorter, but I have customers waiting so you’re just going to have to accept it.» I begin to get into a fairly heated argument with her, so she decides to cut my hair a little shorter. Once again, she barely scrapes any of my hair off with her wet noodle razor technique, and tells me that that is as short as she can go. I accept the fact that this woman is confused and doesn’t understand the fact that the haircut isn’t complete until the customer is satisfied.
I walked out of that barber shop having paid $ 10 for the least hair removal I’ve ever experienced in my life. So please, heed my warning, DO NOT BOTHER COMING TO THIS AWFUL EXCUSE FOR A BARBER SHOP, AND IF FOR SOME REASON YOU HAVE TO, AVOID THE FEMALE BARBER AT ALL COSTS.

I have tried many other places, but I keep coming back to this place. I will address any complaints about this place in my reviews
1. This is a family owned spot. Father, son and daughter work here. If you want a more traditional cut, go with the father and daughter. If you need fades and close cuts, go with the son, Josh. You must be clear about what you want.
2. If you go with Josh he will work with you on what you want. He is a very good cutter and takes his cuts seriously. I don’t think you can get a better cut for $ 10 anywhere.
3. Complaints about Rudeness: This place gets busy! Because of this you need make your presence known when you walk in. If you walk in and take a seat without saying anything, chance are you be attended unless you’re a regular in which most people are. They close at 5pm sharp and if you show up at 4:30 and 4:45 you will not be attended. Don’t expect to get a fade or close cut on fridays or sat as a walk-​in because josh only takes appointments.
To the person complaining about not being attended due to not being a spanish speaker… your comment was borderline racist. Indeed, most of their customers are UC students and are regulars, male and are native english speakers. It seems as if you or your wife did nothing to get attended.
This is a no-​frills classic style barber shop that doesn’t need to be bougie to appease the masses. People come here for the cuts and the convos.

Friendly staff, old timey and classic, non-​bougie place. Great haircut for cheap. Doesn’t come with the needless amenities that big chains have but luckily, it lacks their superfluous price tag as well. My first visit was pretty taciturn but you could definitely tell it was a family business. I’d recommend and will definitely be back

The old man the cut my hair couldn’t even hold the machine straight. His hands were shaking a lot… I asked him to cut it short and left me with more hair one side of my had than the other… told him to fix it and, not only he didn’t do it but he took my apron out, didn’t give the mirror to look the back of my hair and said «this is a good haircut, there is nothing else I can do for you» REALLY??? So, if he is happy then screw what the customer thinks? I told him,“Really, so I can’t ask you for a better haircut?” he said «no» and called the next customer to seat on my chair. I gave him $ 20 to pay for the $ 10 crappy haircut and tried to give me only $ 9 dollars back… I demanded the extra $ 1…Later on I went to Sportsclip to ask them to fix my hair.
Went back there a few days later to ask for the receipt and they refused to give to me. i recorded on camera. The younger man there told me «we don’t give receipts bro… that’s how it is… you don’t need to come back here for a haircut» CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?
HOW ARE THEY ON BUSINESS ??? THIS IS A ALL CASH BUSINESS THAT DOES NOT PROVIDE RECEIPTS… SO, WHEN EVERYBODY ELSE PAYS THEIR TAXES THESE GUYS ARE PROBABLY REPORTING A FRACTION OF WHAT THEY MAKE!!!

RUDE RUDE RUDE My wife who is 9months pregnant went into University Square Barber Shop for a easy trim and NO ONE helped her. She watched as customer after customer walked in and was helped. Of course being white and not speaking spanish was not a help either. SO RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL! Someone should remind them they opened a barber shop in UC. I have had the same experience myself and the old man (the Dad) had to make one of them help me. I have never felt so discriminated against! DO NOT GET YOUR HAIR CUT HERE!!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!

Walked in at 510pm, waited for 15 minutes and then was told that the shop was closed. Would not recommend going here. Very rude people work here.

Don’t go here unless you are an old Fart and don’t give a fuck about how u look. The guy didn’t even spray water on my hair before he started. I had long hair in between Trimmed hair randomly!

So there is an all-​star barber here and most people are coming in for him. Since he was leaving early he had to turn about 5 customers away. The cut we my 7 year old son got was ok. The place is cheap so it works on a budget.

Yesterday my Grandpa, Grandma and I got in a huge argument. A proud Navy Veteran, Grandpa has always gotten his haircuts at Miramar Base. But in the past few weeks his health has deteriorated to the point that he can’t drive. Also, those in uniform get served first on base — which means that Grandpa would wait 45−60+ minutes which is too long for him to wait since he might run out of oxygen from his portable unit. Despite this, Grandpa steadfastly refused to go anywhere else.
After a lot of pleading from Grandma, our home health nurse and yours truly we finally convinced him to give University Square Barber a try today. I picked him up on my lunch break from work and we went over. The shop is clean, and the Barbers were professional and friendly. Grandpa and I didn’t have to wait long at all and we enjoyed watching Castaway for a few minutes on the gorgeous flat screen TV.
Haircut and eyebrow trim set us back $ 10 + $ 2 tip and gave Grandpa a real boost of confidence. Thanks so much University Square Barber! Grandpa and I are really looking forward to coming back!

University city barber is the best place to get a fade, high and tight, or clean cut in the local area.
I discovered the barber Josh in my senior year at UCSD and my only regret is that I didn’t start seeing him sooner.
I get the high and tight with skin fade and it always looks great.
Cost for a cut is $ 10 and I would highly recommend calling beforehand to see how busy Josh will be.

Since coming here I knew I found my haircut place. Affordable price with clean cuts for busy men. Done and done.

I don’t usually update my reviews.
But when I do, it’s to tell you how I got THE MOST BOMB haircut today!
Logan, a.k.a. Redbeard, knows what he’s doing. He gave me the most awesome gentleman’s cut, and even styled it up for me using some Sauvecite pomade. He even gave me some tips on which gels/​pomades to use and not to use on my hair, which was helpful since I honestly never used any of that stuff on my hair before.
Overall, it looks really nice, I’m very satisfied. This place needs more patronage, and I’m definitely going to recommend this place to the college buddies who don’t have $ 25 just for a haircut on campus.

The owner can’t even cut sideburns evenly. 4 times and not once was it even. Apparently he won’t cut anything that’s not on the hairstyle poster from the 80s. He will use a clipper to cut the sides to whatever guard you want and then the same for the top. Don’t ever ask him to cut an inch or 2 off or he will give you a pissed off only what’s on the poster lecture. Mind you I tipped $ 7 for a $ 8 haircut every single time I went.
The lady that worked here was okay. First time I asked for fingers width and she left my hair 2 – 3 inches long. Then she refused to cut it more. Whatever it didn’t look bad and I still tipped $ 7. Next time was okay. Haircut was good but she spent a good ten minutes just standing there talking in Spanish halfway through my haircut. I just sat there and watched the time go by.
Go here if you want a cheap haircut and you have a simple short hair style. Don’t expect good service and you will leave happy.

I feel like i need to update this. Especially cause somehow this place has 3 stars. I found (Josh) when I first moved to San Diego. Can’t beat the price. And It would be very hard to beat the cut. I get a comb over which Josh recommended. Now he even has me getting a hard line part. I get tons of compiments on my hair. I use once again recommended by Josh the Suavecito Pomade Which he sells at an unbeatable price. $ 10 hair cut and I always throw him a $ 5 tip. The other Barbers seem good but I always wait in line for Josh. You might want to call ahead. Really don’t know how this place is rated so low. I always tell Josh he needs to enter competitions. which I think he may have recently.

Try the older gentleman who owns the place, he takes his time and gives you an excellent haircut. As far as I’m concerned the rest of the barbers here are hit or miss.

I’ve been to several different barber shops before – some gave great cuts, some were okay, but all of them tried their best to give you a haircut to your satisfaction.
Except this one.
I asked for the lady to cut a #3 – what she gave me was NOT a #3, more like a #5. When I told her that it was still too long, she said that she had customers waiting and wasn’t going to do anymore. Her attitude and tone were condescending and belittling, probably because she thought a young student wasn’t as rich as a working professional and didn’t matter as much.
Because we vote with our dollars, I will no longer be supporting this business.
Worst barber experience I have ever had.

ANOTHER $ 8 HAIRCUT JOINT closer to UCSD than Happy Barber. HURRAYFREAKINYAY.
It’s located right next to Vons and it’s kind of hidden so park in front of the doughnut store. You should see the sign: «Barber» or something like that.
It was not busy on a Saturday at 2pm, which was a sweet deal thankyouGod.
I actually liked how the guy cut my hair. I think I’ve now found my ideal haircut length thanks to what he did.
I just pulled out a strand of hair, put it next to a ruler, and wrote down the length. HAHAHA I hope no one reads this review now.

I’ve been going to this place for a while now, and have always been impressed by their consistant service. Regardless of who takes care of me, I always leave looking good and with money left over in my pocket!
When I get a haircut, I always think of the old joke: «If you walk into a barber shop with who barbers, always go to the one with the bad haircut, because it means the other guy cut his hair!»
