Business Owner

Matt Mann has been in the farm grocery business for most of his life. Growing up around the family produce stand, Matt knew that the produce business was for him. Naturally, Matt opened Windmill Farms to carry on the goal of providing high quality, organic foods to the San Diego community. Matt hopes that you’ll stop by to do some grocery shopping or to pick up some freshly prepared meals for your next family dinner!

one of my favorite places to shop for my healthy lifestyle :) it’s a little more pricey than ur average grocery store but to me, it’s worth it. u can definitely find great deals if ur looking! friendly, helpful staff. love the community, I grew up in the area so I always run into someone I know (which I love!)! I love the feeling of buying fresh groceries :)

When in the area always stop in for lunch. They make amazing sandwiches but also have a salad bar and soup bar. All spurts of sides and organic and fresh products. A wide selection of craft beer as well

They have some great produce. Great selection, and great prices.
The butcher case looks great, but can get a bit pricey.
Still, the location is nice and close to me.
There are some other good little shops in the mall I like.
If you are in Del Cerro, stop by Windmill Farms, and check their fruits and veggies. Fantastic.

The guy behind the deli counter was a jerk. He seemed to be bothered that we wanted to order sandwiches. One of our sandwiches was well built, but the other barely had anything in it. It only takes one crappy employee… won’t be back

I visited windmill farms Dec 13 & Dec 20.
Decent prices on fruits and veggies.
I didn’t try to use the spice bins this time; should make those pour dispensers to prevent cross contamination.
Looked for new vegan items, most are soy based but, still a decent selection to work with, waiting for vegan egg substitute to hit the shelves. Was able to find most of what I need. Will visit again today.

Whether it be a quick lunch, a beer, or fixins for dinner Windmill Farms always comes through for me. They have a lovely and fresh salad bar as well as ready made soups, chickens and sandwiches made to order. There are also a ton of tasty salads and side dishes for your to pick through.
I could probably spend hours in the store but limit myself to my lunch hour so I don’t go broke… I’m not going to lie, I’ve eaten in my car on the way back to work because I’ve cut it so close!
Perusing the beers and non alcoholic beverages alone takes some time. I leave usually with a lavender lemonade and some water. Maybe a nice new beer for after work too sometimes. I do this usually while they are making my samidge.
I’ve also found some cool gifts, candles, and lotions while walking the aisles, wine and beer always make a perfect gift right?! I love that this place is close to work and always satisfies any hunger cravings I’m having. I’ll definitely be back… a ton of times!

OK, I admit it, I love shopping at Windmill Farms! The staff is always polite, friendly and efficient. The store space is well organized, easy to understand and easy to navigate. Most recently I’ve been addicted to their Greek marinated chicken thighs. I buy about 3 pounds, grill on the BBQ for 12 – 15 minutes and then my wife and I have healthy protein which will last us almost a week. Another great find in the seafood department was Basa. I had never heard of Basa but the staff person highly recommend it. So I purchased three fillets and went home to my computer to look up Basa recipes on the internet. One recipe stood out from the rest and has become a weekly meal:
A. Sprinkle Basa fillets with Rodelle Seafood Seasoning.
B. Add sliced green onions, one onion per each fillet.
C. Add thinly sliced lemons to cover fillets.
D. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 – 12 minutes.
My wife and I also rely on Windmill Farms for all of our fresh fruits, nuts and produce. So Unilocalers, visit Windmill Farms once and you’ll become a regular customer!

So if you look up Windmill Farms, you can find how Boney’s, Henry’s, Sprouts and Windmill Farms all come from the same family in the beginning (that puts it simply, it is a bit more complex of a history.) Then it makes more sense how Windmill Farms feels so much like a Sprouts.
I like to go to Windmill farms when I am out in the SDSU area. It has so many things that I didn’t even know about in the health section, loads of selection in the spices and bulk bins (they have broken honey mustard pretzels.) I might like Windmill Farms a little more than Sprout’s but I think it’s due to my honey mustard pretzel addiction. (Sprouts sometimes runs out of the tasty broken ones.) It seems that for a lot of the bulk items they are the same ones as Sprouts.
We always have to get a sandwich (it seems like if you choose the Squaw bread your sandwich becomes enormous.) They also have lots of baked goods, a little self-​serve coffee/​donut section, a teeny gift section, and a good selection of beer/​wine. And all the other grocery store things you might need.
This is a great place to get a whole bunch of stuff for a lunch at Lake Murray or Cowles Mountain which are quite near. All of the employees are super nice.
The store is right across the highway from SDSU, so very convenient if you are there or just to stop in off if you are on 8. There are a few other shops, a gas station and a Einstein’s bagel place in the same area.
It is a large grocery store with the same homey barnlike feeling as Sprouts rather than the sterile feel of other grocery stores.

Great market to shop at. Similar feel to Sprouts, but even better. $ 3.99-$ 4.99 deli sandwiches made in front of you. Great deal and delicious. Don’t forget to get a buy 7 get 8th free card. Food quality is good, prices are competitive, and staff is friendly.

We come here regularly now for thick-​sliced flavored deli meats, delicious deli salads, fresh-​cut produce, and random, new, unique items that catch our eye. The one negative thing I have to say is that the freshness of the bulk food items is (understandably) variable. We got some granola which was fine, but the bottom-​of-​the-​barrel (maybe that was our problem) half-​popped cheesy popcorn was stale and inedible.
Regardless, I could spend hours wandering around Windmill Farms!
On a side note, I have to mention that the first time we came here after my last post when we had been on a mission to get Bitchin’ Sauce, they had it out to sample! What are the chances!

Good deli sandwiches. Reasonable price and fresh ingredients. I got a veggie sandwich on rye bread for $ 3.99 and will be back! I think the deli is a separate company.
Windmill Farms as a whole is great too — but it’s expensive, so even though it’s very close to my house, I only grab a few things here. They have a huge variety of tasty seeded organic and flat breads, coconut water, and dairy-​free alternatives like coconut ice cream, almond milk creamers, etc.
I would love if they carried tree nut cheese (hint-​hint).
There are times when the cashiers are very nice and other times that I think they hired very bored and angry SDSU students. All in all I like the variety of what they have in stock and get the rest of what I need at Sprouts and Vons.

This is for the deli area, haven’t actually visited the rest of the store.
My boyfriend and I stopped in after a long workout on a Saturday afternoon. The line was pretty long for the deli, there was probably seven other people in front of us. I ordered a tuna sandwich, I was starving and didn’t know what anything was so I played it safe. First impression, decent selection of sandwiches. I’m loving how fresh everything is. There’s a good selection of bread (white wheat and sourdough I think it was). The sourdough was so good. The tuna was perfect and good lord the sandwich was hugeeee! I didn’t even finish it, gave to my brother. I also tried this brand of kettle chips I’d never seen, they were delicious. Also tried the banana pudding, sooooooooo good

Remember your Sandwich Card!
I’ve been meaning to clear some Bookmarks after stalking people’s check-​ins and reading comments about these fabled deli sandwiches. Starting at $ 4.99, the sandwiches are very good. The lunchtime crowd of customers near the deli counter waiting to hear their name called will attest to that.
I went with a Lindsey Special and asked the friendly guy at the deli counter some basic questions (many bread options and a bounty of garden fresh ingredients for thought) to help guide my virgin voyage through Windmill Farm’s sandwich journey. Free shoutout to Guac Shack, whose logo was on his ball cap.
It was roughly a 10 – 15 minutes wait, but there was a team of 4 associates working to help hasten sandwich production, then you pickup and pay at the checkout lanes. Unless I’m the newbie that didn’t notice, I think service efficiency could be helped with an express cashier at the deli counter if getting a sandwich and maybe a couple of other things like chips and a drink so you don’t get trapped in the cashier aisle behind grocery laden conveyer belts. Sandwich fans should consider calling ahead the lunch order during peak times.
It’s a great sandwich and value for what you’re paying for. There is also a salad and soup bar there too. I hope prices don’t spike up in short time again, though.

This is exactly the type of store I wish we had more of in North Park. They would do such great business if they opened one here. Hint, hint ;-).
The grocery department at Windmill Farms gets a solid 5 stars from me. I am always impressed with their deals on produce, and the bulk section is fantastic. The prices, selection, and quality of their bulk goods are way better than they are at Whole Foods, Baron’s Market and Sprouts. They also carry a lot of natural and organic brands that are hard to find at conventional grocery stores.
I really love the rustic feel at this store. It feels like one of the small town stores from my youth. It is comforting to think that my grocery dollars aren’t going to a giant corporation like Kroger.
My only bad experiences at this store have come from the deli. The guys working there make it obvious that they hate making sandwiches, which is, well, their job. I ordered a vegetarian sandwich and asked if it came with avocado. The kid said yes, then he asked me what other toppings I wanted. I began listing off the veggies I wanted, and he rolled his eyes (maybe even his whole head) at me. I guess now I know what it feels like to raise a teenager. He asked what kind of cheese I wanted, and I answered. When he rang me up, he charged me extra for cheese, even though he implied it was included, and the sandwich didn’t even have the promised avocado. Bugger.
With a few small changes, this could easily be the best market in San Diego.

Alright, I’ve been coming here frequently enough now that I think it warrants an update.
This place is still an awesome local grocer. They have a huge selection of meats, breads (Ezekiel, Dudley’s, Artisan, and various others). Their meat department is excellent, lots of great meats and fish, packaged, fresh, marinated, you name it. They also have tons of produce, fruits and vegetables and a bunch of specialty snack items like chocolate pretzels, various nuts, granola mixes and all that good stuff.
They also have an impressive Craft Beer selection. It’s probably better than just about every grocer/​specialty grocer I’ve seen and definitely better than that of Albertsons and Vons. Their pricing is pretty on par too, maybe a couple that might be $.020-​$ 1 more than the cheapest place in town but overall it’s a great setup. You name it, Stone, Mission, Mother Earth, Hess, Green Flash, Victory, Coronado, Alesmith, Karl Strauss, Lost Abbey and a bunch of others. Tons of IPAs, Pales, Stouts, Browns, etc.
Another huge hit is their deli. Awesome sandwiches all around and solid pricing. The Lindsey Special is my favorite thus far. They also have a salad bar as well. Also, recently, not sure if it’s a summer thing only (I’m thinking that it is) but Friday-​Sunday they have a smoker/​BBQ tent in the parking lot and are selling pulled pork, smoked Tri-​Tip sandwiches and other BBQ goodness.
Anyway, I’m finding myself here more and more lately. They’ve definitely improved things a bit since my original review. This place is definitely a gem, just ask the SDSU crowd, I see those kids in here buying sandwiches all the time. Honestly, the place is hard to beat for quality food, produce and sandwiches!

Love this little neighborhood market nestled away in Del Cerro. Very clean and inviting. They don’t have everything like a large superstore but what they do have is quality. Great fresh produce, meat dept is good too with selections of steaks, chicken, fish, sausages etc. My favorite thing is the deli. I come here as often as I can for a good deli sammy.
Staff is always nice and willing to answer any questions. Worth the trip!
