Aaron Gordon is a top notch firm that recently completed a 3 month renovation of my Pacific Heights home. We hail from Manhattan where I have gut renovated three apartments. At this point, I am fairly familiar with the process and knew that it would be a difficult to find a high quality firm to do a smaller renovation. We had recently purchased the home from a guy who flipped it and we needed to upgrade some of the work and add a bathroom. The entire interior of the house was painted and several rooms were wall papered. Lighting was replaced and sconces added.
Bill Johnson was my foreman and he could not have been nicer nor more conscientious. Always delivered as promised and kept his good sense of humor intact. At one point I was concerned that it would be impossible to install a chandelier over a metal industrial table that weighs literally a ton. He looked at the situation and said «I’m not going to consider that a problem until I’m sure it is one» — gotta love an attitude like that! And guess what– they managed to do it!
Their subs are super nice and talented — one happy family who really work together to produce a great final product. Special shout-​put to Domingo, Felipe, Elvis and Synad — we miss you guys!!!

We were referred to Aaron Gordon Construction by a trusted friend. My friend was right – Aaron and his crew get it done the right way! The whole crew was professional, resourceful and efficient. We had a load bearing wall removed to open up our living area space. We also had bathroom shelves installed and a wine fridge island area with a butcher block counter top installed. They also installed some light fixtures and organized the internal paint job (loved the colors!!). The design intern was creative and did an excellent job helping us find the right look for our new living space. Overall, we could not be happier with the end product. We lived through the construction and it was honestly better than I thought it would be. AGC and crew really know what they are doing. They were also just great people that were fun to talk to. Aaron Gordon Construction did a great job repairing and painting my staircase. They were really professional and responsive. I’d definitely hire them again and recommend them.

We found Aaron Gordon Construction on Unilocal.After hiring them to replace our front windows, we decided to work with them again for our big kitchen remodel. Everyone from the kitchen specialist, foreman, designer, and men completing the day to day work are great to work with. The lines of communication were clear and they dealt with our frequent questions in a friendly and patient manner.
We are going to be contacting Aaron Gordon Construction in the future when we tackle remodeling our two bathrooms.
Last, but not least, we love our new kitchen! It turned out to have much more of a «high end» feel then we had anticipated.

I needed to get my family’s bathroom and kitchen redone and called up AG construction. They told me they didnt do the kind of work I was looking for but they were able to parse out who I should contact and pointed me towards other contractors who did a GREAT JOB. When we discovered a leak in our family room, we called an attorney friend who sues bad contractors for a living. He recommended AGC. Well done! Not only did they immediately diagnose the problem correctly (always challenging with leaks), they gave us three options for fixing the issue at three different price points. We ended up choosing the most expensive one because we didn’t want to simply buy time and figured we would bite the bullet. The crew was so professional, so clean, so prompt, on budget, great communicators, very pro-​active. Their bid was very competitive (we had priced out two other groups). It was a large job that involved residing our entire addition to our house but they made it painless (well, as painless as these things can be…). A good honest and skillful contractor is a rare thing indeed. We recommend Aaron Gordon without reservation.

I have waited over a year to write a review for AGC because I wanted to see how the work they did held up. I’m pleased to say that after working with Aaron and his team on a full kitchen and double-​bath remodel, I am still thrilled with the results. The project lasted over 8 months, and through it all Aaron and Joro, his foreman, were incredibly responsive, honest, and competitive when it came to price. They are not a cut-​rate contracting crew, but that was not what I wanted. What I wanted was to get high-​end quality work for a reasonable price, and that was what I received. Aside from the work inside my condo, Aaron’s team was terrific in dealing with my neighbors, and ensuring that their concerns were met.
The only caution I would make is one that applies to all contractors, which is that any client needs to make sure they inspect the work by the subs and promptly notify the contractor. I did this with Aaron and he was very prompt in making needed changes or replacements, which was great. I look forward to working with him again in the future if the need arises.

When a sewer backup destroyed the first floor of our house last fall (yes, it was as abject as it sounds), Aaron Gordon and his incredible team brought our home back to life with extraordinary professionalism, knowledge, transparency and even humor. We interviewed some dozen general contractors and that many more subs; and the first thing that impressed us about Aaron’s team was their communication. Phone calls and emails were returned within an hour — and often in much less time than that — when nearly all of the competitors proved virtually irresponsive by comparison. The horror stories about many GCs not bothering to show up when scheduled; or failing to respond to queries; or never producing an estimate after weeks are, alas, all too true. Aaron Gordon, on the other hand, inspired confidence from the beginning– and this quality alone earns his company five+ stars. Aaron and every one of his team members were never anything less than upfront about cost, scheduling, time and upgrades. And then, of course, there’s the final product. The reconstruction is beautiful, rock-​solid and for the ages. The team brought an artistic eye to the smallest details and an engineer’s expertise when it came to the house’s systems, plumbing and electrical. Everyone was professional, timely, meticulous, friendly and responsive.
AGC handled our rebuild with flexibility, sensitivity and patience, terms one hardly associates with home reconstruction at any scale, much less the traumatic and compulsory kind foisted upon us. That should tell you something about the kind of company they are: they actually managed to dial down our stress level from 11 to something entirely reasonable (5 or 6?) The conditions leading up to the reconstruction were beyond anxiety-​ridden as they involved interminable exchanges with insurance. Given the rabid market for good GCs in the Bay Area, AGC could easily have declined our job in pursuit of an easier project. But they stuck it out with us over many months, even as the process seemed dammed to bureaucratic purgatory. On this count, our special thanks go to Brian, the stellar estimator, who somehow managed to bring humor to a very unfunny situation.
By the time actual construction began months later, we knew we had made the right choice. In fact, we trusted AGC so much that we were able to go abroad for work (scheduled well before the house damage) knowing that things would get done as planned. And we knew the work would be excellent. Good communications were even more essential during this stage. We could always rely on the upstanding foreman, Trevor, for informative video updates and timely Skype exchanges. A key to the success of the project, I think, is that Trevor and his crew foresaw any potential issues well in advance; and knew exactly the right questions to address and pose of us as homeowners. Our thanks to Trevor, Amber, Monique, Sal and all the others for such outstanding work.
Yes, it is true that this level of service and product comes at some cost; but I do believe you get what you pay for in the area of general contracting, especially in a city as morbidly expensive as San Francisco. This is very far from suggesting that AGC is an «elitist» firm catering only to the 1%. We’re a professional couple who have to watch the bottom line like everyone else; we hardly have disposable income to splash out on an enforced upgrade. But we also know that this kind of investment, both material and immaterial, is the best value. Entrusting your property to paid professionals is one thing. Entrusting your domestic space and time to strangers — and then building an actual relationship with those people — is something else entirely.

I’m not sure if 2 stars is harsh or not, but I actually have «experienced better».
I don’t think this 2 star rating though will deter the targeted market, however.
Aaron is a business professional, as he certainly would not want to waste anyone’s time. I’m sure that he takes his work seriously. I understand that people need to run a business, and he seems to have found a niche. That niche is for people who don’t mind spending money for wonderful salesmanship and the art of communication. His body of work may be aesthetically pleasing and/​or may not be inclined to skip corners, however, pricing of construction is very subjective.
Before even looking at our home or drawings, he asked what our budget was before making an estimate. I stated that 100k would be our estimated budget which would include a kitchen (mostly cosmetic without moving around any plumbing or gas), and basement remodel. Perhaps some of you may be chuckling under your breath and scoffing at my «low» balling. But I thought that it’d be reasonable considering that we spent 25k (minus fixtures) on our bathroom which turned out quite nice. It’d be 25k for the bathroom in the basement, 65k-​70k for the kitchen (again, mostly cosmetic– using mostly standard cabinets and minimal custom, not including appliances as we will be not including that in the contractor’s estimate). He told me that would likely be 200k and that a kitchen would be 100k as a base. By that, he meant that I was calling the wrong guy.
He also went on to tell me to be wary of other contractors as they will not likely to be reliable if they quote low. Well, going into this, I knew that there’d be surprises along the way. But, for him to even discuss the motives of competitors is not exactly savvy.
A business that thrives under the exclusivity will not care about my review. If you are an upper middle class customer, I would forgo even contacting this place. If the sky’s the limit, Aaron’s your guy.

If you would rather have me lie about my experience and dismiss my feelings how the conversation on the phone went, then you, being an honest person yourself, would certainly not want me to change my thoughts on the matter. You see, if you run a business, you must give a good first impression. I have paid a comparable price for the remodel that has been completed, only because the contractor took a better look at the project we had. He also went on to work with our budget, and discussed the unknowns that structural engineers could only give a best guess to certain situations. Our contractor did not make me feel like a indigent walking into a boutique; «Hi, I’d like to buy a wallet, and my budget is 200 dollars.» Only to be turned away and told «Our hand-​crafted genuine leather artisanal works of art are a minimum of 500.» Perhaps, you could tell me what your thoughts are by setting foot in my house and discussing about our small kitchen and working around our budget. But you didn’t offer that. Hence, I stand by my argument regarding price points and target clientele; I am not naïve to business practices.
Instead, you dismissed me, because you were far too busy. And by using a budget to declare, «let’s not waste both of our times» does not leave a good taste in my mouth. It wreaks of elitism and snobbishness that caters to the bottom line. You however are very inclined to take the time to write to me about your reputation. Thanks for letting me know what I have missed.
For you, Aaron, I will give you 3 stars, because you showed some effort and I realize that you have a reputation to maintain. I am above this, but I am only trying to speak to my peers who grew up from the working class who did good in life and understand value.

I have done several large projects, ranging from $ 10,000 to $ 3M, (this one was $ 61,000 aka Unit 350) most of the time using General Contractors and I have never in my life finished a major project on-​time OR on-​budget — until now. I hired Aaron Gordon Construction based on their Unilocal reviews, gotta-​love-​Yelp.
For the first time ever, we finished this project On-​Time AND Exactly On Budget!
Since I have a lot of experience with Contractors, I made a long laundry list of all that I wanted done, with good specifics so there would be no confusion. I will take some small credit for the success of our project because of that. Still, there was no nickel-​and-​diming, no periods of time where nobody showed up (an absolute first for me), really no problems. There were some unforeseen issues, but some unforeseen savings here and there which AGC was happy to figure were a wash rather than riding me for change orders.
Remarkably, I don’t see where I paid a premium for AGC either. They were the lowest bidder of three. All three were substantial companies, however. I was not comparing AGC with «some guy» — only established, reputable companies, licensed, insured, well rated, etc.
I am used to contractors bidding to get a job and then working to build margin through padded change-​orders. AGC seemed to me to have no interest in creating work where it was not needed, like they really just wanted to get this done as-​quoted, and lucky for me, there were no legitimate changes of scope needed either.
Another first for me is how they left the job. In all cases in my past, the contractors left some damage, ranging from minor to serious, but usually in the middle where it was just easier for me to fix it myself than chase them down. AGC impressed me from the beginning by making a very big project of just protecting my property. They brought in all forms of protection for the floors, walls, etc., and not only that, but they cleaned the place at the end. Never had that before.
I can actually say that this was the first remodel project where I actually enjoyed the process. When you are working with people who not only take pride in their work, but also take pride in bringing you value, it can actually be fun. I could relax and just enjoy the whole project.
Unfortunately for me, 90% of my work is in the South Bay. Not sure when I will have another major project in SF, but when I do, you can bet AGC will top my list.

Josh answered the phone quickly and with a friendly attitude. He seemed professional and listened to my entire situation. It turns out I didn’t need a general contractor so he kindly referred me to the appropriate service. So while I can’t speak towards their final product personally: I had an excellent experience over the phone and will certainly call them up if I do need a contractor!

I had a bad experience hiring Aaron Gordon and I would suggest that others consider my story.
My project started in the Spring of 2012 when I realized that I had a couple of water leaks on one side of my house related to windows. I had never hired a contractor before for any work of this kind and it’s pretty daunting when you know something is wrong with your house and you don’t know what exactly.
I interviewed a number of contractors who were highly rated on Unilocal.I got bids from 3 and Aaron Gordon was the highest. I was concerned about the cost but Aaron presented himself as a straight shooter who would stand behind his work.
Troubleshooting a leak is a challenge, because it is difficult to scope out the size of the problem without tearing apart a house to some degree. I understood that and Aaron worked on a time and materials basis. After intial demo work we signed a contract and Aaron’s team tore all of the stucco off one side of my house to diagnose the problem. Aaron told me I had ‘one bad window’ and ‘one marginal window’ that needed to be replaced but that all of the other windows should be removed and re-​flashed. I agreed and went ahead. This initial contract was not-​to-​exceed @$ 29K, including the cost of the two windows that were purchased as replacements.
As the work went on, Aaron’s team said some framing had been weakened and needed to be replaced, and they requested and I approved a change order for an additional 13K. At every step, when they told me the problem was worse than anticipated, I agreed to the increased expenses.
3 months after the job was complete I had water running down the outside of my house from within the wall. This was because the stucco subcontractor Aaron had hired stapled into a water pipe in my wall and punctured a copper line. Aaron acknowledged this was their error and they came back and fixed the problem. If this was the end of the story, I would be happy with Aaron’s work.
In last big rain storm we had in 2014, one of the windows that Aaron’s team installed started leaking. Leaking windows were the reason I hired Aaron in the first place. I called Aaron and he sent over his foreman to review the problem. The foreman reported that the window leak was ‘not their fault’ and that the window itself had failed. This was a window that Aaron’s team had removed from my house, assessed and reinstalled. All of a sudden, 18 months after the installation, it was the window’s fault that it failed.
I explained to Aaron that I rely on my mechanic to tell me what is wrong with my car and my doctor to tell me what is wrong with my body, so I follow what my contractor tells me to do with my house. Aaron told us to replace two windows and so we did. 10 others he simply re-​installed.
All I want is for Aaron to do the right thing and help me fix my problem. With the latest leak I wanted Aaron to help me solve my problem since his team was already intimately familiar with my house and the windows in question. He did not want to accept any responsibility for installing a window that leaked 18 months after he was done. I offered to pay for the cost of the windows and to cover the cost of the work (to fix the problem that was not fixed the first time I paid Aaron!). Aaron explained that he does not want my business and would rather not do my job.
Aaron has good reviews on Unilocal.He has plenty of business. He does not need or want to clean up the mess at my house. The reviews are pretty consistent that Aaron is very expensive. My experience shows his work does not equate to the fancy prices that his customers pay.
I wish I could start the whole process over with a different contractor.

In my initial review I acknowledged that you stood behind your work when your stucco sub punctured my water pipe.
After your team had removed all of the windows in my house, you told me I had two that needed to be replaced. I paid for those to be replaced of course. You as the contractor are the expert in the situation.
After the job was underway for 2.5 months your foreman pointed out problems with another window he was about to re-​install. That window no doubt should have been diagnosed at the START of the project. He said it could be repaired or replaced. I asked if he was confident that he could repair the window, and he said, «Yes.» Putting this much faith in your team was a mistake on my part.
I fully acknowledge that you have good reviews on Unilocal.
As long as you can continue to find customers like ‘Roving Gourmand’ who will say, «AGC is who I will be calling to help me continue squandering money on my never-​ending pet project» you’re set. I don’t like to squander money and I don’t have any never-​ending pet projects. I don’t want to pay top dollar a second time for a window you installed that leaked 18 months later.

My partner and I did a remodel of our house, gutting the entire downstairs, waterproofing it and converting it to living space. After having a bad experience with another contractor, we were very wary about entering into another such relationship. Aaron was just the opposite — he was quick to respond and timed the job well so that something got accomplished every day. There was one item that turned out below our expectations and Aaron re-​did the work immediately and without complaint. He was the most expensive contractor to bid on the job, but my partner and I felt the other two bidders were not realistic. Also, we needed good service and felt we got what we paid the extra for.
Aaron got the job done on time and on budget. Okay, it was over budget, but that was because we kept adding stuff on to the original plan. And we were glad we did; he saved us a lot by fixing things before they became unusable.
His foreman was courteous, competent and smart and the crew was as well.
I recommend Aaron if you’re looking for good work and good service.

I have a home into which I have put over $ 4 million in renovations over the past quarter century. That’s about $ 1 million more than the house is worth, but the journey has been worth the price. Through the years, I have engaged numerous contractors to do a variety of projects: plumbing, electrical, framing, roofing, flooring, windows, HVAC, etc. I have become completely familiar with disappointment. When I decided to do my last project, a neighbor suggested contacting Aaron Gordon Construction for an estimate. I followed my neighbor’s advice and was at first taken back by the price, but learned quickly that I was dealing with a whole different class of operations.
My house is filled with custom cabinetry built in my own basement shop. AGC came in, covered all the floors, wrapped all the cabinets, and padded all the doorways and archways. Every day, every scrap of debris vanished before the last person left the job site. During the $ 70,000+ project, rot and other forms of damage were uncovered that had been created by the less expensive firms I had employed over the past 27 years. All of that got exposed, pointed out to me, and corrected on the fly.
The result was the most professional project I have ever witnessed among the 30+ contractors who have flowed through my place since I bought it in 1987. Going forward, AGC is who I will be calling to help me continue squandering money on my never-​ending pet project. They are already preparing bids on two new projects.

I am a San Francisco architect with over 30 years experience and I work with many different contractors. I get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. Aaron Gordon turned out to be one of the good ones. The price to do the job was reasonable, the work was conducted and a professional manner, and the change orders were requested in situations where they were obviously warranted. He went out of his way to make things work when some hidden structural issues came to light in the middle of the project. I would not hesitate to recommend Aaron’s company. He does excellent work and is an honest contractor.

I do not doubt that Aaron Gordon Construction does good work, and there is certainly a place for luxury contracting services, but I was left somewhat baffled by the quote I got for 500 square feet of tile installation in a one-​bedroom apartment.
I called several of the highest-​rated contractors on Unilocal and received estimates ranging from $ 4000-​$ 6000 (labor only; no materials).
The quote I received from Aaron Gordon was $ 30,250.
Yes, over five times higher than the highest estimate I received from other listed contractors; $ 5000 more than the price of my car; more than some people I know make in a year… and the tile itself isn’t even included.
I used Homewyse to estimate the price of such service in my zip code and the total cost they provided ranged from $ 3,760-$ 5,545.
I was taken aback (thought maybe the comma had sneaked over to the right), so I followed up and he told me that the other estimates were unusually low. I’m going to give this company the benefit of the doubt and assume their skills are so great it warrants the price (like maybe gemstones are inlayed secretly into everything), rather than him having given me an overinflated estimate because they were too busy to work on my place…
Even so, wow. The price differential is far too high.
UPDATE: Reading John L.‘s review, I’m now insulted at having been given an inflated price. I’d much rather they told me my place wasn’t worth their time.

I want to recommend Aaron Gordon Construction. He is a true professional who surrounds himself with like minded professionals. It is a pleasure having Aaron and his team in my home.
I am an interior designer and chose Aaron to remodel my bathroom/​guest bedroom and it was obvious that he takes his craft seriously. I have worked with many contractors in my line of work and rate him among the top in his field. I can’t say that about all of the contractors I have worked with.
Some of the important details to me: He kept me abreast of costs with projections, he was on time, his crew was respectful and respectable, he returns calls promptly, he gave me change orders before the work proceeded, the project was always clean at the end of the day and he always answered my questions with interest and respect.
Aaron Gordon is NOT your average contractor. I wholeheartedly can recommend him

I’ve met up with Aaron twice to get bids/​estimates/​inspections/​etc. I appreciate his hip sensibilities and tastes. He was born in SF and he has a broad understanding of the city, which informs his discussions about real estate value, architecture, construction, etc. I like that he is young but not too young. Old enough to know what he is doing but young enough to have modern class and style with his ideas.
He is candid and professional. He was early both times he was supposed to meet me. He gives honest feedback and it seems like he errs on the side of overpricing instead of underpricing estimates (unlike other contractors) because he doesn’t want his clients to endure any surprises later.
He openly admits that he is not inexpensive but is happy to help give referrals to other businesses. He understands that not everybody is working with a luxury budget. But, at the same time, he refuses to do cheap work. I sense he doesn’t want to compromise his brand or reputation — which I respect.
Aaron has never done construction for me (yet!) but one day soon! Also, he is witty and cracks me up. For me, that goes a long way when dealing with an otherwise humorless situation — homebuying and big construction projects.
One last thing — I’m surprised by a couple other reviews that said they got «cold» replies from Aaron. He’s straightforward but not cold. If he’ll spend his valuable time for mere dollars to drive to me and give me advice (which he never rushes through), I can’t imagine him being dismissive to someone else.
Plus, what do people expect? He’s a contractor — his job is not to make you feel warm and fuzzy, it’s to give smart advice and execute quality work.

My wife and I were very nervous as this was a big project for us and after meeting with Aaron, we were immediately put at ease. He walked us through everything we would need from a-​z and was very professional. He and his crew know their stuff and their work was spectacular.
