Sad sad day! It looks like they’ve permanently closed. Oh where will we get our sponge cake and almond cookies now? And where will all the old men go to drink their Hong Kong milk tea?

Friendly, cheap, and tasty Chinese pastries. Good for breakfast or for daytime snack. It’s super close to our office, so the location is perfect for me.

This review is only based on their egg tarts. And MAN were they good! My boyfriend told me that this place’s egg tarts were similar if not better than the Golden Gate Bakery ones. We just ordered one for $ 1.20 (apparently used to be way cheaper at 80 cents) and oh my goodness. One of the best egg tarts I have ever had. It was still warm, and the crust was super flaky and delicious.
I can’t say anything about the inside or service, because we just walked up to the counter, ordered, got our egg tart, and left. Don’t even remember what the sign looked like. But the egg tart: YUM.

Good & Bad:
Good is the butter walnut cookie, 60c each, is delicious. I got one, then went back for 10 more.
Bad:
Walnut twist, $ 1.20, tastes like cardboard. When I went back to tell them (when buying more walnut cookies) they said nothing. Didn’t even give me a break on the 10 cookies I was buying. Crummy customer service.

Delicious, fresh, and complete and utter sweethearts! Got a bakers dozen of yummy egg tarts and he gave us an extra to eat right there! Very generous and sweet.

THE Best strawberry spongecake.

Would give more stars but they sold me a spoiled chicken bun! When asked to replace it, they exchanged one for one. A good customer service place would try to win you over again, no? Egg tarts were great, of course. Stick to what they’re known for — the egg tarts. Ordered taro pineapple bun. It was ok. Dry. Stick to the egg tarts.

Amazing egg tarts. The guy is super nice, I love supporting his business because of that. Totally recommend checking out their pastries (egg tarts and banana rice cake especially)

So,
Came in here only because I was visiting the fish store up the street and on the walk back to the car I wanted to stop and get a pastry.
We walked in and saw a decent assortment of flaky pastries.
I asked what was in one of them and the young lady rudly responded, «JUST CREME»
Uhm really? Cuz it looks like more than just crème — God forbid one of us had a food allergy.
Anyway, we got the stupid pastry and it was pretty bad. Im pretty fair — even if I had the worst customer service — if the food is excellent I’ll let the attitude slide. But it’s probably safe to say one of the worst that I’ve ever had. Bland, the «just CREME» was dry and hard.
Never again.

I love the egg tart there! 90 cents for one!!! its really big too! I have been coming to this place since year 2000, things never change and it is still as good as when I first visited this place. Btw, get the angel cake in a paper cup too, it is too good to pass up.

Well my mom went back to complain and they gave her another cake, but yeah, not really apologetic about it and still insist that the cake was fresh… I mean, even though we got the cake fixed it was like going back and forth and the date just wasn’t the same as the actual birthday day… Anyways, If they improve, I will update the review…

On our visit to SF back in 2005, my siblings and I wanted to buy a few egg custards and some pastries. It must have been near closing time because the owner kept discounting the price of the pastries, urged us to buy a few more, and kept negotiating that he’ll thrown in an extra pastry here and there. He was very convincing since we walked out with more than twice the amount of pastries we originally intended to buy including 11 egg custards! It was a very memorable story from our SF trip since we remember the ridiculousness of walking out the bakery with so many pastries! However we forgot which bakery it was and only remembered that it was in the new Chinatown area.
On my recent visit to SF, we happened to walk into this bakery and from the restaurant layout, I recalled it was the very same bakery! We just had to get a few egg custards for memory sake. We wanted 3 but the very same convincing guy urged us to buy half a dozen. Needless to say, he won again! The egg custards were freshly baked and had a thin, flaky crust. My strategy for next time: I’ll ask for less than I want so that I’ll walk out with the exact amount I intended to buy :) Either way, nothing to lose since the pastries are good! If anything, you’ll just gain a few lbs: D

Butter Cream Horn — sweet, creamy, flaky and delicious pastry. Spacious bakery with seating available and clean facility. Staff members here were friendly and the service was very good when I came in on Sunday. Positive first time experience here so far, I will definitely come back for my pastry cravings when I am in the area. One of the dining establishments along the Clement St corridor for something to eat and drink.

I heard that they have really good dan tat aka egg custard tart, so I bought a box full to take to work and at 95 cents a pop they were really cheap. They are also pretty big too, almost 3 inches in diameter. My coworker who had never had one before was excited to try it for the first time ate half and left it behind. Then I tried a half and it wasn’t that great. I don’t know if it needed to be heated up but I definitely have had better.

Why We are Regulars @ Alex Bakery:
1) Chinese father-​in-​law approved!
2) The Pork and Beef Curry Baked Buns are always gobbled up at family get togethers.
3) The Egg Custard Tarts pass muster with the Hubby (and who wants to wait in the line at Golden Gate Bakery if you don’t have to?).
4) The oddly non-​pineapple tasting «Pineapple» Baked Buns and Sweet Bean Baked Buns make my sweet teeth happy.
5) Open before 7am. (I can’t believe I was up that early either!)
6) You can get 5 boxes crammed full of Asian baked goodies for around $ 50 and happy coworkers in return.

I haven’t gotten too much here. Usually when we come, we only get the egg tart. GOLDEN BAKERY, you are so overrated (damn Unilocal and foodie craze). I forget how much the egg tart is (hey only my parents buy it!) — but they say it’s much cheaper and I take their word for it.
I don’t even really like egg tarts but I eat this one :)

First time here! Lots of seating, most taken by the typical old eldery grandpas chatting and enjoying their coffee.
1. Greeted me friendly even though I wasnt ready yet.
2. They got a lot of buns. Sadly, I wanted to get ham & egg and ham & corn, but they sold out. However, the man suggested the custard bun, which was super big and good! Probably one of the best I’ve eaten.
3. Also ordered a egg tart and a chocolate roll. Yay for cheap chinese bakerys! Only cost me around $ 3.
I will be back to try more of their rolls.

Walked by by chance with a friend after exploring Sutro Baths and Land’s End by OB.
The store owner was super awesome and friendly… maybe cuz it was during closing time… but we were offered such great deals like 6 for $ 3 taro buns and essentially anything else in the hot «keep warm» oven.
Got three taro pineapple buns (hong kong style) for bfast tomorrow… so excited to eat them all! Cheap and looked delish, can’t wait to come back again and sample more yummy azn baked goods.

egg tart was flaky, but too sweet. the walnut twist was terrible. u’d better prepare fake teeth to chew on it.
Another day I came. Their egg tart is made differently. A lot bigger this time but a bit cold. It’s less flaky but also less sweet this time. I also bought their onion cookies as they look quite different and interesting.

Alex Bakery has quite an assortment of steam and baked pastries. starting at .60 cents. decent size too. just happens the steamed pork bbq bun was out.
