I’ve been in the art and design industry for a number of years and was pleasantly surprised to stumble on this gem on a recent trip to San Fran. They have an magnificent masters collection, but what you see on the walls just scratches the surface. Jennifer, a fine art consultant on staff, was extremely knowledgable and friendly, and spent an hour with us in the vaults of their basement, pulling out pieces we’d never have seen otherwise. Needless to say, we fell in love with a number of Miro and Kandinsky lithographs.
I was in touch with Jennifer over the course of next few months and she helped my family invest in two incredible prints. Never once did we feel pressured, but rather educated and fully confident by the time we were prepared to make a decision. I am most grateful for the experience, and would highly recommend this gallery to anyone with a passion for the arts.

It seems silly to post a review on Unilocal about such an upscale gallery like this one, but I’m doing it anyway. There’s an incredible collection of Picasso, Miro, Renoir, Pissarro, Rembrandt, Chagall, etc, etc. You’ll see less known works by these artists, including affordable etchings and lithographs. The atmosphere is comfortable. I’m very pleased to have just purchased a second work from this place. In several years, once I’ve paid off my new credit card debt, I will go back to buy a third piece.

Discovering the row of fine art galleries along this stretch of Geary Street was one of the nicest surprises I’ve had in a long time.
The big secret for all you travelers: Museums sometimes charge for admission. Galleries, where the art is for sale, never charge. And if you go to a gallery like Christopher Clark, you will see the same art that you might see in a museum. For free! I saw a special exhibit of Rembrandt etchings at the de Young museum only a few days after visiting this gallery. And I had seen some of the exact same pieces at Christopher Clark gallery.
When I visited, the gallery had two entire walls of prints of Rembrandt and Albrecht Durer etchings. Upstairs were lithographs by plenty of famous 20^th century artists, including a large number beautiful Marc Chagall pieces, most of which were on sale. (They say that they’re the biggest Chagall distributor in the US!)
I was made to feel very welcome; Barry, one of the employees, gave me a magnifying glass to use to examine the etchings more closely, and was happy to answer any of our questions. I wasn’t planning on buying anything that day, but received a long, fairly heavy sales pitch from Barry, who is good at what he does; he was very polite and friendly, and didn’t push too hard once it became clear that I wouldn’t be buying anything that day.
So I can’t speak to the experience of purchasing art from Christopher Clark, but it’s a lot of fun to go and browse if you’re in the Union Square area.

Excellent collection well worth a visit (even just to see) of some original art by 20^th century masters. Friendly staff but unfortunately a bit presumptuous. They’ll give you the once over and if they direct you to the internet for a modern reproduction of one of their posters, you’ll know you didn’t make their grade.

There was a lot of lithographs, which I didn’t expect to see in a fine art gallery, but there were also original works of art. We were browsing, not there to buy, and I appreciate that we weren’t given a high pressured spiel. I found the staff to be exceptionally welcoming and pleasant. If I did ever find myself in the position to buy fine art, I’d see what this gallery had to offer as I had a very positive browsing experience.

One of the most comfortable galleries I’ve meandered through…
Beautiful collection of Picassos, Miros, Chagalls, Pisarros, Whistlers, Lautrec, and more…
Barry McArdle and Barbara Mann were both incredibly patient and generous with their time and knowledge, and I came out feeling quite enriched.
In no position to start collecting now, but when I do, I think this is where I’ll begin. There’s a Miro with my name on it hanging upstairs…

This is one of the «Trip Bonus» highlights I was lucky enough to fall into on my rainy-day walk through the city.
Lucky, I say because my favorite artist of all time was being showcased. yay! Toulouse-Lautrec and I go waaay back to my days living abroad in Paris. I studied his work (and his life) like it was my job, and I am always enamored with any new pieces I get to see. They had 1 chalk I hadn’t seen, but the work they had were some of my favorite pieces.
They have 2 floors of work, and a variety of great pieces including some interesting sculptures. The gallery did have a cold museum feel like you didn’t want to talk too loud or you’d be ousted to the street. Even when approached by the Gallery associates it was in hushed tones. I prefer a bit more personable environment where the gallery folk talk to you and engage you in your art interests instead of trying to impress you with their knowledge, but like I said — trip bonus for me. I ran across this gallery on our first night in the city. They were closed but I could see through the window an artist that I like I made a mental note that I wanted to return because they had an exhibit of a French post impressionist artist that I like Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. I popped in on Sunday morning. This gallery is unlike the sort of galleries that I normally go to. Kind of snooty, cold just a basic gallery the kind you may come across on El Paseo in Palm Desert. Picture a show room with art. However the gal at the front desk was welcoming. The other art snob of a man with an annoying voice was not so much. It doesn’t hurt to say HI you tool. But, once again I didn’t come to make friends. I wanted to see the art.
Other artist that they featured was Mucha, Miro, three lithos upstairs of Dali, Cheret, Miro, Matisse, Chagall, Picasso just to name a few. It’s one thing to see these works in books or magazines but to see them in person is another.
Note: go upstairs! That’s where I found the Dali, Picasso, Chagall and Miro!

This is not a place for casual buyers looking to fill a blank space on the living room wall. It’s as much a mini-museum as it is a gallery, with two levels of art that covers the gamut of old and modern masters, including Picasso, Manet, Matisse, Renoir, Rembrandt, Whistler, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Chagall, and Dali. The sale of one painting will probably cover their Union Square rent for several years, and the purchase of one will put you into debt forever. The staff clearly can distinguish between buyers and broswers, but treats both with professional courtesy and respect.
