Concept Materials

Though I did not use Concept Materials because I was not having new flooring installed, rather sanding and polyurethane put on am existing kitchen floor. However, the folks here gave me the name of «Eric», whose business card does have Concept Materials on the front. He and his co-​worker were excellent, showing up for the bid promptly, then showing up for the work over the 2 days it took. My kitchen was left almost spotless despite the sanding. He also purchased and placed floor protectors on my existing chairs, replacing ones that had worn, as well as 6 for under my rolling table. When I expressed difficulty I might have moving the table back into the kitchen if I needed to lift it to put down on the floor protectors, he offered to return on Monday with his co-​worker do do this at NO ADDED cost. Both men were courteous and EXCELLENT in what they did as both craftsmen and customer service.

I had my law office floors redone with hard wood flooring by Concept Materials. They are good people and provided excellent professional service. They showed up on time, were very helpful in selecting my flooring, and were on top of communication and responding to my questions.
They showed up on time and got my 3 suite job done in one day ahead of schedule. It was imperative that the floor be completed over the weekend so I could put my office back together.
I worked directly with Gene who really took care of us.

We needed to have the rugs in our home removed, and contacted Concept Materials. We had someone over the same day to give us a proposal, and found that they could start within a week. Gene and his crew not only ripped out the old rugs, up stairs as well as down stairs,(including the stairs! and took all the garbage with them. Work was done within 2 weeks, and it is beautiful! I never though I would like wood flooring, but I love it! Gene and his crew were professional, friendly and very hard working.

I hired Concept Materials based on my friend’s recommendation and was really glad I did. Concept Materials did a great job putting a new floor for me. I contacted Gene for an estimate. He was on-​time and very polite. We talked, I explained what I wanted to be done and he gave me a detailed quote on the entire project, so I knew right from the start how much the project would run me. After we agreed on the terms, he bought and delivered all the necessary parts and after a few days, his crew installed it. The crew was polite, friendly, very clean and did a great job. They respected my home while doing the work there. The floor looked gorgeous and I was very happy. It was done fast and professional. I highly recommend Gene and Concept Materials. Thank you, Gene.

Rolando Lopez and his crew from Concept Materials did an amazing job on my hardwood project. In particular, there were a few technical challenges about the project that were very vexing for me – for instance, I wanted smooth and level transitions between tiles and flooring, seamless transition between floor and an irregularly shaped stone fire mantel, and stair step height requirements and transitions between tile and hardwood. I spoke with 3 other installers who wanted to use «standard» solution for my project, such as using thresholds (which I think are ugly), or to cut into my stone fire mantel so that the wood flooring can go under (why would I want to cut the stone mantel to fit the floor, rather than cutting the wooden floor to fit the stone mantel)? Rolando was only one of two installers I spoke with who reassured me that I wanted was not a problem (and he delivered).
I’ve learned later why the other vendors were only able to offer me the «standard» solution – it is because it is easiest for them to do that, and it takes time and skills to go beyond that to give me what I wanted. For instance, I saw how much workmanship and skill it took for Rolando to scribe out the wood planks to fit perfectly the irregularly shaped stone mantel.
Rolando and his crew worked diligently and even worked part of a Sunday to finish my job. It was a joy to have worked with someone who took pride in his work and really enjoys what he does.

Gene Spektor and his team at Concept Materials are outstanding. They are thoroughly professional throughout the process — from initial assessment & estimation of costs, preparation of documentation (for insurance & HOA compliance), help/​advice with selecting flooring materials, as well as the actual implementation. They are very responsive, knowledgeable and go out of their way to ensure a quality outcome. His team members are all top-​notch. They were timely, friendly, the quality of work was excellent. Ours was a complex job, and they executed flawlessly, on time, on budget. I have no hesitation whatsoever in strongly recommending them.

I love the work that Gene’s team delivered. I found him through Unilocal.His contractors were great and Gene himself was very easy to communicate with. I called a few days before Christmas to complete the project by December 30! Talk about a tight schedule. Other places I called said they couldn’t fit me into their schedule for 2 – 3 months.
I had the carpets removed and taken away from 3 bedrooms + one study + 4 closets and had the hardwood floor underneath sanded, polished, apply natural finish + install new baseboards.
Mark, the contractor, was never late. He advised me to replace some of the damaged wood. I initially declined but after he finished prepping the room, I realized that he was right. My decision to finally replace some of the wood caused him A LOT of re-​work but he wanted to satisfy the customer so he brought back all the heavy machines and tools that he had already put away into his van.
Negotiations were very informal and relaxed. There was no pressure. I’m so happy with the results that when I’m ready to do the rest of the house, I’ll be calling on Gene again. I love my house more now.

I could feel the lack of hassle and bs when dealing with Gene. The flooring job was done very quickly, in an organized manner. One subcontractor did innocently forget to re-​floor a closet, so Gene took care of having them return to finish.

Gene and his team did a fantastic job on our condo. We had two bedrooms, a living room, and several closets that we wanted to remove carpets from and install new laminate floors. They made the process of communicating with our HOA as simple as could be, and were in and out with minimal dust (!!) in three days. His team was very understanding of the fact that we could not relocate our cats during the work, and went room-​by-​room in a way that worked out perfectly. The new floors have made a huge difference in our condo’s look and feel, and we are very grateful to have worked with such a skilled and professional team.

Gene’s crew had been a pleasure to work with — top quality workmanship and professionalism. Couldn’t be happier with our new wood floors and the great experience with this contractor. Great value too. We got three bids for the project and Gene’s bid was the best price. I’m sure the installation couldn’t have been any better or gone any smoother. We went with solid hickory wood and it looks gorgeous, they did 3 bedrooms and even did our stairs in under 5 days. No more carpet and dust allergies. YAY!

Very impressed with Gene’s professionalism. Very responsive. The crew works very hard. I really love the cork flooring they did (well I am to be credited for the choice of the material :))
But they did make suggesions on the direction of the plank which I had not considered. Thank god I listened.
Overall, a very good contractor.

Gene and his team delivered above and beyond all of our expectations.
We had three bedrooms that we wanted to remove the carpets from and have new hardwood floors installed. We were on a tight deadline, and on top of that we had a pesky neighbor and a strict HOA.
HOA compliance:
— Gene and his team have many years of experience dealing with HOA requirements. Before any work started, Gene handed me the pamphlet indicating the IIC of the underlayment we were using. He anticipated the requirements of the HOA, so I had the firepower to deal with HOA/​neighbors when we went to get approval.
— When we got to the final stage of approval, Gene responded within an hour when we request insurance information for the HOA approval.
— Our neighbor, who apparently doesn’t realize she lives in a condo, made outrageous request such as having a few hours in the middle of the day every day to be completely quiet. With hardwood floor installation, there is some sawing involved, so some noise is unavoidable. We didn’t want to start a war so we asked Gene and his team to try to comply. Amazingly, they were able to do so and finish all the work in 3 days.
P. S. SF allows work to be done during work hours on weekdays, so if you have the approvals/​permits in place, you shouldn’t need to comply to unreasonable requests like our neighbor’s.
Communication:
Gene is consistently accessible and prompt to respond to our texts/​emails/​calls, even after the project was completed.
Many days after the project finished, we found a minor defect in one of the floorboards and texted Gene. He immediately responded and scheduled a buffing session to eliminate the issue. He personally came to buff the floor and was exactly on time as always.
Work:
This part many other reviewers have commented, so I will be brief. Gene’s team’s work is high quality and expedient. The materials he chose were great quality, and you can tell immediately. Our santos mahogany is standing up to all sorts of scratching with the move in process, and the adhesives used are scent free — in contrast to our living room floor installation, which we had to air out for weeks.
Conclusion:
This is probably the most enjoyable and smooth contractor experience I’ve had. If you go with Gene, you know you will be well taken care of!

When taking bids, Gene was by far the most knowledgeable and professional. Everybody else that we got a bid from was elusive when estimating total cost and danced around our questions.
The hardwood material we purchased far exceeded our expectations. The figure quality on each piece of engineered wood was beautiful!

These guys went above and beyond expectations. From leveling our floors, to cleaning and leaving cardboard behind so we can thoroughly protect them. When they left, it was like our floors had been like this since we purchased our home. They made our dinky looking house look like a million dollars! These guys know what they are doing, and are worth every penny! Pick them! You won’t be sorry!

Gene was recommended by Kevin at Simple Floors, where we purchased the wood flooring for our home. From start to finish, Gene and his team were wonderful to work with and the installation went off without a hitch. Gene and his crew were extremely professional in their approach and their work reflects their level of professionalism. They were on time, respectful of our neighbors, the floors look amazing and they left the place clean and ready to put our things back in. After two years of looking for solid contractors, we felt like we hit the jack pot and would recommend them to others!

Gene was recommended to me by Simple Floors, the floor seller, for replacing the carpet in my two-​bedroom condo with wood floors.
His team did a great job. They were skillful, thorough and quick to come up with solutions for issues that came up. I appreciated that his team respected the building property and my neighbors — they never left behind a mess, and they worked a strict schedule from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to avoid disturbing people before and after work hours. They started the job on a Wednesday and finished on Monday evening.
Just two minor glitches: 1.) In his initial walkthrough of the apartment, Gene had said the pre-​existing wood floor in our kitchen was glued down, so removing it and replacing it with the rest of the apartment’s new flooring would be too expensive. It turned out this was incorrect and the flooring could be easily removed — so now we’ll have to schedule a future job to have them come back to replace the flooring in the kitchen. 2.) In my final invoice, Gene accidentally charged me twice for the cement that was used; fortunately I noticed this quickly and Gene was both apologetic and quick to issue me a refund check. (Always get a receipt!) That said, I believe these were both just honest mistakes.
The floors look great, the team was friendly and I’d work with them again.

Gene and his crew were the easiest, most reliable and cost-​effective part of our condo renovation.
My partner and I received several quotes to put in new engineered hard wood floors at our condo. Concept Materials came in at the lowest price. After they were selected, Concept Materials were very professional in purchasing the flooring, delivering materials and letting them sit to acclimate, and being diligent and attentive during installation.
The floors look great and the process was the most pleasant experience of the renovations. Highly recommend!
