Costello’s Tree Service

I hired them to trim two large trees on the sidewalk so that the building could be painted and let in more light into the lower unit. I got an estimate and the crew came in the morning and worked on the trees for 30 – 45 minutes, according to my tenant. They did a very poor job on trimming it back 30% as I asked. When I called to have someone come out and have a second look at them, the guy was 3.5 hours late and did not even call to let me know that he was late. I had to wait in front of my building for an hour and came back to the office to call him to see where he was. The owner came by later in the day which I had to go back out there the second time. He promised that the crew will come back out to clean up some branches which were still overhaning the street and to clean up cut branches which were hanging onto other branches. They never came back and the cut branch dropped from above from the wind. It could have hit someone on the head!
I would not use them again and will have to try someone else now.

Had two very large dying Monterey Pines removed from the backyard of a rental property and was completely satisfied with the work.
I had bids from two other big brand named tree services, one was nearly twice as much and the other three times as much. Costello completed this big job in a single day working from 8am to nearly 6pm (after dark), when the other firms were projecting up to three days.
My tenant at the property was home all day and emailed me to tell me how impressed she was with the skill of the workers. I visited the property as they removed the last couple branches (though a very narrow passage) and began the clean-​up of the huge amounts of saw dust and chips. The many workers all seemed to be dedicated to getting the job done right, even after a long day on the job. I can not think of anything to complain about for this job!
Please keep in mind that it is the responsibility of the property owner to notify any neighbors that will be impacted by the work and to arrange access. I had to do some leg work to identify owners and get access to ensure that the job went smoothly. I did my part and Costello did theirs.
No, they don’t have arborists running around in a fleet of company cars, nor do they have someone in the office full time. So, if you need the comfort of someone answering the office phone whenever you call, or, possibly, more extensive consultation with an arborist, you may want to spend more money on other services. In my case the work was straight forward and they did it satisfactorily.

Okay, I really WANTED to like them and give them a good review. They’ve been around forever. But ever since they did some work for me, I find myself feeling disappointed and perplexed. The trees in my small yard, along with the one in front on the sidewalk, seriously needed pruning. The folks from Costello came and explained what they would do and gave me an estimate. At the time I was told that one of the fellows doing the assessment was an owner. The estimate was good, and I agreed.
When the work was done, they forgot to do one tree that was scheduled to be pruned, and it was obvious that it was in need, AND the job they did on the tree in front of my house was crazy. The result of that pruning made the tree grow in such an odd configuration that every time there is a storm, branches break off because they are sticking out like very long fingers on a small hand. Also, the trees in my backyard are not growing well and I feel like I should have been advised about what to expect. I wouldn’t know if pruning was supposed to create a bit of stress and therefore cause a more lengthy time of adjustment.

These guys broke a skylight on our property when removing a neighbor’s tree, and we have called repeatedly to have them deal with fixing it. We have finally given up, as they clearly know that it’s not like we’re going to take them to court over it or anything, too bad for us that we’re out a few hundred bucks I guess. It is really really really unfortunate for them to sow this sort of ill-​will and irresponsibility, bad karma bad karma!

«Diamond Certified» my ass! I think the whole Diamond Certified thing is a sham.
I don’t have the time to detail all the things that are wrong with this company. Suffice it to say, their customer service sucks, their communication sucks, and the work itself is ok, but nothing special. The guys worked hard, but clearly had no direction from the «boss» about the specifics of the job. The office folks talk a great game to get you to hire them, then the workers do whatever they feel like, regardless of what you’ve asked them to do, because clearly they got no info about the job. Highly frustrating and disrespectful, bordering on a scam if I thought they were organized enough to have that intention — more just careless and don’t give a damn.

A storm caused a large limb to fall on my deck. A week after the storm passed, I used Google and found Costello’s who sent a rep to give me an estimate. What a whopper! They wanted $ 800.00 to remove the limb and carry away the debris!
That seemed very, very high to me so I called the main office to ask about the seemingly high price and they said that was a quote for the limb plus some other work on another damaged limb.
$ 800.00 still seemed too high for me so I called another tree service who came out to my house and quoted me only $ 125.00 for the fallen limb and another $ 175.00 to remove other damaged limbs. That’s a total of $ 300! Sorry Costello’s — you tried to take advantage of the bad weather. That’s called gouging and it’s not only poor business but it’s against the law.

These guys were working an adjoining property. We found them on our roof and in our backyard at 7:30 in the morning. My wife opening the curtains with our daughter in her arms and there was a guy standing on our lower roof. They were moving our patio furniture around and putting plywood on our windows. We asked them who had given them permission but they refused to talk to us so we called the cops but then we felt bad about having them cited for trespassing.
We really shouldn’t have because after we thought about it some more we got even more pissed off. I even called the company to speak with the owner. I left a message and the guy I talked to apologized but then the owner never called back.
This is actually the second time they have done this. Five years ago we found one of their crews in our backyard. They told us they were picking up branches so we told them to go ahead and finish. They started uncovering pots and planters that we had covered.
Why even bother with a company that’s going to treat people this way and doesn’t even have the decency to ask before invading people’s property?
