In Lieu

In Lieu and its sister store Anica are one of the reasons I have decided to move. Living on the same block as these two enticing boutiques has become a hazard to my self-​worth — from both a literal financial standpoint as well as my conceptualization of personal value.
The torture of passing by the gut churningly chic window displays and deceiving sale signs has become a daily challenge, because I now know, without a doubt, that if I enter either store, I have little to no chance of leaving without dropping a few hund-​o.
While I adore these stores and the seemingly effortlessly styled pieces I have acquired throughout our relationship — when you are no longer in control of your own actions, I believe it is wise to remove yourself from the temptation.
Goodbye sweet In Lieu, goodbye sweet Anica. My closet will miss you dearly but my bank account will not.

This is one of the worst boutiques I have ever been to. Snooty staff with no merchandise to back up the attitude! The buyer for this boutique is truly awful. They have a few decent brands but most of the clothes are extraordinarily bland and the selection is not cohesive at all. It seems as if they are desperately trying to latch onto whatever is trendy but they fail miserably, often picking the worst pieces of a collection. I have no idea how they manage to stay in business, especially next to a great store such as Anica, which has an amazing selection.
The funniest thing is their blog StyleBite which, instead of promoting their own lackluster wares, acts as a shill for other sites, especially Anica. I guess they are trying to affiliate themselves with stores that are actually good by sandwiching themselves in a list of links that includes La Garconne and Le Train Bleu.

They have Earnest Sewn jeans! They have Earnest Sewn jeans! 3 different styles at $ 189. (Same as buying on website)
They also have Lucy, the mascot chihuahua/​terrier mix at In Lieu. Lucy is very cute.

I like that they carry Earnest Sewn and I like that they carry local designers. I do not like the VERY gray small open space; maybe they could carry some local print/​canvas/​photography artists as well?

Fabulous and unique clothes for every occasion. Definitely one of my favorite places to shop in San Francisco! All my favorite pieces are from In Lieu. I love this store!

This store rocks. The owner, Christina, has a great eye. I wish I owned every single item there! She has great dresses and an amazing pair of boots that I’m saving up for. The prices are what you would expect for an upscale quality boutique.

UPDATE: Got a note from In Lieu apologizing for any misunderstanding. Much appreciated. We all get misunderstood sometimes and things can get tense in the quest for cute clothing articles. I will go shop there soon and review. It is only fair.

Nobody wants a snooty sales staff. I went in to look for a jacket I had found in the neighborhood but they did not have my size.
I asked if they carried that designer’s line and I was told to go to Ethan’s because they are the Loehmanns of the neighborhood and they would carry something off season or unknown designers.
OKAY. Well 1) I love Loehmanns2) no need to be snooty — just want to find my jacket.
I didn’t even look around — I guess I am more of a Ethan’s gal.

First off… they have cute clothes and i’ve experienced some friendly salesgirls there. They also participate in local neighborhood events like the North Beach Cookie Walk, which is cool.
Recently friend had an experience here where somehow she came away with the impression that the salesperson was ragging on another boutique that we love, calling it a «glorified Loehmanns.» So she felt put down and offended, and determined In Lieu was a bit on the snobby side… well both of us Unilocaled about it.
She was just contacted by the salesperson who apologized and clarified that she was not intending to put down another store or my friend. She explained herself rationally and professionally and offered us a discount. I bumped up my review several stars for their above-​and-​beyond customer service… we all make mistakes and it’s great that this business has people working there who will right wrongs.
That’s the power of the Unilocal baby.

in lieu is fairly new to north beach but what a great addition! dont forget about it when you are shopping on grant, just because its on green. they have some really great little-​known designers, and now that they have been open for a while, they have been getting more new stuff more often. the owners have a great eye for unique clothes and its definitely different from many of the boutiques in the city.

I love this store — I just moved to the neighborhood and have already purchased a dress and shirt. The prices are a mix of cheap and expensive, stop in often to shop the sale rack.

thanks to fellow Unilocaler helen y.‘s review i was able to finally locate my very own paper and denim sweatshirt that i’ve been looking everywhere for (i really love this Unilocal thing)! a sweet gal named christina helped me over the phone and said that she would ship it out to me that day (which was yesterday) and i already received it today along w/​a 10% coupon on my next purchase!!! i love my new comfy and cute sweatshirt and can’t wait to check out the store in person!

Randomly walked by this cute new boutique today while searching for an Italian bakery. While I never found my Italian treat, I did get an awesome green sweatshirt by Paper Denim! The store also carries some really hard to find brands like the designer Corey Lynn Calter.

Stopped by the Grand Opening– also got wine and cheese, yum, thanks!
I got a great top there and it didn’t break the bank. And the owner, Christina, threw in free Tshirts with the store logo on them for myself and 2 more for my friends!
I’m hoping, as another reviewer said, that it doesn’t turn into a skinny girl store… I’m a totally average sized/​athletic shaped girl so I’ll be happy if I can grab something great here now and then. I’d like to support this local shop, but time will tell if I will be able to based on the sizes/​styles in the store.

Cute clothes, but scarce for now and prices are reasonable.
The one person looming over me and the others in there was a bit un-​friendly.

The owner Christina is still builiding up stock but what she has is great. Excellent selection of Jeans!
Christina said that she will have tons of spring stuff in by mid Feb.
