Along with a catchy tagline is a 16-​year history of bringing high-​quality, authentic Arkansas-​style barbecue to the Bay Area. We take pride in our food, and we want our customers to enjoy a good, honest meal at a reasonable price.

Our shop is a barbecue take-​out restaurant in the heart of Portola. Call in an order and we’ll have it ready when you arrive. Or walk in and sit at the counter, and chat with Joe while you wait for your order. We also have a couple tables if you’d rather eat in.

Our menu consists of traditional barbecue items — brisket, pulled pork, pork ribs, chicken, and beef links — as well as specialty items like soul food. Everything is prepared on-​site.

Complimenting our meat perfectly is our homemade barbecue sauce. Sauce is key to barbecue, and ours is a prize winner. We serve mild and medium sauces alongside a hot sauce we lovingly call the thermal-​nuclear sauce.

History

Established in 1995.

Johnson’s Barbecue has served the Bay Area fine barbecue from our cozy little restaurant in Portola since 1995. Joe Johnson, the owner and proprietor, is an active member of the community and has single-​handedly built up a strong and diverse customer base in the time since opening.

The menu has evolved slowly over time to include new items like fish and soul food, but we remain true to our barbecue roots and continue to prepare the meat in the traditional way: low and slow.

Business Owner

Joe Johnson — aka the Meat Man — comes from a family of barbecuers. He has a decades-​long career as an award-​winning ribber who has participated in barbecue competitions across America. He has a passion for good barbecue and has the skill to deliver high-​quality product using a traditional method.
