Description

Specialties

Currently, we are only offering services by appointment: Seminars, master level, and advanced martial artists.

Progressive Martial Arts has redefined the warrior way by creating a truly updated system. The structure remains traditional and maintains a belt system to track progress, but the curriculum includes a modern study of social justice philosophy, an integrated approach to traditional and modern fighting systems, and science-based fitness.

The physical conditioning utilizes the NASM Optimum Performance Training method, rigorous «old school» martial arts bodyweight exercises, TRX, and Olympic weightlifting technique. Students are continually evaluated for posture and muscle imbalances then prescribed corrective exercises. Interval training circuits maximize the efficiency of the workout and core stability work is routine to promote functional strength.

Students begin with Taekwondo and integrate Judo, Jiujitsu, Kali, Muay Thai, and modern systems of self-defense including Blauer Tactical’s SPEAR system. We value the old ways while embracing the advancing human evolution.

History

Established in 1999.

PMA is a nonprofit which began as a Mission YMCA youth LGBTQ and straight ally martial arts club. We have always ensured access to anyone with low income. Over the years we ran classes in church basements, schools, SOMA Recreation Center, Femina Potens Gallery, Master Fox’s home, parks, and even our own grant funded facility.

For the many years we shared space in the beautiful Hwa Rang Kwan Martial Arts Center through a generous agreement with Master Steve Rapport. Thus, allowing us to offer an affordable martial arts program for $ 50 a month. Since Progressive Martial Arts is now limited to advanced training and seminars by appointment only, we suggest joining HRK TKD for a fun, friendly, excellent taekwondo class experience.

Our curriculum has continued to evolve and become more effective. We have exciting plans for the future, but one thing won’t change: our committment to the warrior spirit and our thousand pushup black belt test!
