Pyramind is both an audio production company specializing in full audio development for video games and interactive media as well as a Music Production school. As a school, Pyramind’s professional staff and instructors leverage their years of experience to create a unique training and production experience (including five studios and two multi seat training labs) dedicated to those who have a passion for creating, recording, performing and producing music, working in post-​production and/​or composing and sound designing for picture and video games.

History

Established in 1987.

Pyramind was founded in 1987 by Gregory J. Gordon as one of San Francisco’s first MIDI and digital audio production facilities. Greg developed Pyramind by recording many Bay Area recording artists. Early projects included working on multiple albums with Bay Area luminary Merl Saunders and his collaborations with The Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia as well as Greg’s group Native Budz that helped launch the Bay Area Trip Hop sound. In 1996 Greg expanded Pyramind’s operations to address the needs of the tech industry, which led Pyramind to grow into commercial Post Production and interactive audio development. Soon after, Greg diversified Pyramind’s reach again with training and networking resources for students and professionals in the new digital audio industry. In 2000, Pyramind became a registered non-​degree granting institution with the California Bureau for Private Post Secondary Education. Also in 2000, Greg partnered with Matt Donner, to co-​architect Pyramind’s curriculum.

Greg is a creative executive with a proven track record of leadership and innovative business development. He is the founder and CEO of Pyramind Studios and Training and his talents and skills range from producer, mixer, educator, and singer/​song-​writer to music executive, author, and public speaker.

Greg’s production credits range from: Mixing AAA videogame scores like Halo Anniversary — Combat Evolved (343 Industries) and award winning titles like Kinect Disneyland Adventures (Microsoft Game Studios) and producing the sound track (42 original songs) for Insomniac Games’ Sunset Overdrive. Greg’s passion for music has also led him to work with many internationally known artists like Rob Garza (Thievery Corporation), Jef Stott (Six Degrees), Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia (Sumatone Records), Irina Mikhailova (Elefaria Records), and Rocker T and Joan Baez (Epiphyte Records).

I’ll start by saying the classes are informative and give a good foundation to start a career in the music industry. There are also some good teachers here that care.
Pyramind hosted the SF auditions for Boston’s Berklee College of Music and this was the first I had heard of it and seen the facility. I received a scholarship so I lived in Boston a few years, and came back to CA. I actually referred a friend of mine to attend Pyramind’s full certification program and went with said friend to sign up.
At the sign up, I was surprised that they said that when you attend Pyramind you can retake and attend any class again if you so desire, as many times as you want. I thought that was awesome — wow these people are so chill! Two months later I decide I would like to get my Pro Tools certification as well as a few others and spent thousands of dollars (most of the money in my bank account) signing up for 3 weekly classes.
After attending a few weeks of class, my brother’s stage four cancer got worse and we were told he would have a short time to live. I went into a deep depression and stopped working and attending classes entirely to visit him every day. A month after he passed away I came to Pyramind to explain what happened and to say I’d like to attend the next round of classes. I was met with a resounding NO. You can only retake a class if you attend the FULL Certification program. So that was it. No empathy or understanding for my situation, which I would expect from a small community of artists. So I was left with barely any money and no chance of taking the classes that I payed for — -but they told me I could pay in full again. No thank you.

Pyramind is a great group of folks who really care about providing relevant, high-​quality instruction in the musical arts. Their classes are very thorough and you can tell they care about the class experience and how much we, the students, get from our time there. They have classes of all sorts, for all genres. You can learn to set up a sound field in a studio or club, get production skills honed or refreshed, and much more. Having great resources like Pyramind on-​hand is another reason we are very lucky to live here in the Bay Area. What are you waiting for?

graduated a few years ago and I can say this is the best school in the Bay Area. Soup to nuts music industry learning with a really fantastic staff of instructors. Steffen Franz being my favorite with his wonderful mentoring skills. You can only succeed in the music business if you create a web of talented people, and the best place to do that is Pyramind. I have been a student at Pyramind for the past year and I LOVE IT. This is what school should be like. The incredibly talented and dedicated staff make this school stand out from ANY other similar school. If you want to learn about production — from mixing, song writing, piano, synthesis, remixing, game audio, music business or recording — you should come here over any other school! Trust me, I visited 4 other schools before settling on Pyramind and I am so happy to be here!!!

Pyramind has been such an extraordinary experience for me. The staff is FANTASTIC and I learned everything I needed to know to make my dream a reality. Even after I graduated the staff still continues to assist me in my career. Pyramind gives you all the tools and connections you need to be successful in the music industry whether you are a DJ, singer/​songwriter, producer, engineer and so on. Also, it caters to any genre of music you are into. I have nothing but great things to say about this school and feel very fortunate that I attended. When I started here I didn’t even know how to turn on a Mac but in less than a year I started recording, producing, and writing my own music. I achieved things I never thought possible and I cannot thank Pyramind enough for all their help!

I’m working with one of Pyramind’s alumn on my new CD and it’s going great. We also did a couple of early and overdub sessions in Pyramind’s smashing new studio which went very smoothly. Everyone I’ve been in contact with there, from student and staff engineers to studio managers, were fab.

This is an educational institution, so consider your reason for going here carefully. That said, Pyramind has the «State-​of-​the-​Art» technology just waiting for you to learn and use. Skills are very important. If you put your time in, you’ll get what you need.

With HUGE music studios becoming more and more obsolete these days, I think it’s great that a place like Pyramind can embrace both paradigms.
They teach classes on desktop music production, so that you can make tracks like the Chemical Brothers on the very computer you are reading this on. Yet when it comes to the fine tuning of your mix you can rent out their acoustically tuned mixing rooms, complete with Genelec HR monitors to make sure your music BUMPS!
If you’re a DJ that wants to produce or a beginning guitar student, you could learn a ton by taking their classes or you could study privately. They are hip to all the latest and greatest software and will show you how to use it to expand the melodic and harmonic qualities of your compositions, control the metabolism of your arrangements and hone the frequencies of your mix.
