Rattie Ratz Rescue

I adopted two rats from Rattie Ratz last year. They both had respiratory problems but Tahna sent them home with medicine. They were absolutely wonderful rats! Rattie Ratz are quick to respond to emails and Tahna is always there to give advice — even after the adoption. If you are looking for a specific kind of rat, Tahna will keep that in mind and contact you once she gets him/​her in. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking to add a new member or two to the family! This rescue group has so much passion.

This is the best rat rescue ever! We recently adopted 2 awesome rats from them Sugar, and Spice, now Frieda and Fudge. Please adopt and do not buy animals at a pet store. I guarantee you will love all their rescue rats and the volunteers are terrific too!

I originally really loved this place, but after adopting my second rat I realized something. They are in such a rush to adopt out their rats that they don’t really take the time to see if they’re 100% healthy. I got a Siamese boy who kept having terrible dental issues where he could hardly eat. And my baby girl ‘Garlic’ that I have renamed Lily, had a very severe Upper respiratory infection that when looked on through X-​rays it’s amazing how she has managed to keep herself alive.
The lady on the phone even admitted to me that when they get rats they have a month of quarantining them before adoption, and they usually rush to adopt out.
So my baby Lily was adopted thinking she was 100% healthy when she actually had signs of a URI (after taking her to the doctor they pointed out the clear signs and made it so obvious)
After nearly $ 700.00 later I had to put my baby down and I’m devastated I loved her so much and I could of made her life more comfortable knowing all what was wrong in December.
Their rats are great, it’s the rushing to adopt them out that little things like a URI get overlooked and next thing you know you have to put your baby to sleep. If you’re going to adopt from them be sure to take them to a vet shortly after to get a full health checkup it could save a life.

A little background of myself. I decided to adopt two rats at this rescue because I wanted to help and support little businesses than to support mainstream companies. After researching I found Rattie Ratz and this place was very nice it appeared that they took the best care of their rats. In their website and the reviews I read about them said that they use the best products for their rats and I was looking forward to adopting here. My girlfriend and I wanted to adopt rats after our mouse past away a week before so we had the experience of taking care of small animals. I signed the application process and I wanted to reserve two fancy rats and the lady in the phone seemed nice and helpful. After signing the application electronically I was ready to go pick up the rats the next day. The day before I bought the best cage i could find, bought the best food i could find, and even bought some toys for the rats. I researched that rats should not use pine or cedar bedding because the toxins make the rats uncomfortable. I drove from Fremont all the way to walnut creek to adopt these rats just to help this small establishment out. When I got there, the help I received from the girl organizing the event was awful to me and my girlfriend. I have never experienced such disrespect from a place i was willing to help out, keep in mind I was willing to pay fifty dollars for two rats (twenty five dollars each rat). The girl did not want to sell me the rats because she said we were a young couple and that we were most likely to break up and return the rats. After her saying that she basically pushed us aside and told us there was two people ahead of us and that mostly all the rats were adopted already. I left them voice mails earlier in the week that I was interested in picking up rats and that is what i thought was going to happen. I was waiting patiently and she kept talking at us disrespectfully that we were in her way. I expected to come here and pick up the rats I reserved because I signed the papers the day before. After waiting for twenty minutes aimlessly I decided to leave and adopted my rats elsewhere. I will never do business with these people again and i recommend to have better management of Rattie Ratz for the future.

Emailed Rattie Ratz inquiring about an affordable veterinarian in the area, and they replied with a recommend vet in less than a hour! Seems very caring and really looks like they put rats first. Can’t wait to adopt from them in the future when my current rats pass.

Tanya the owner is great and knows her rats inside and out. I just adopted two baby boys from her, at a private adoption and I couldn’t be more pleased. My biggest concern was the health of my baby boys. I had searched all over local pet stores and it seemed like every rat I found was ill with a upper respiratory infection. Just to settle my worries tanya gave me some antibiotics to take home with me. I’m excited to get to know my new babies and I’m looking forward to adopting from rattie ratz again!

Our family started out as foster parents for two rats. We never had rats before and wanted to see if our dogs and our allergies could handle the rats. Every thing went great and we ended up adopting our Sassy girl. She was so sweet and loved coming out of her cage. She would walk around on our couch and loved being held.
Unfortunately, Sassy passed away After only 9 months of being with our family. But she was an older adult when we got her from Rattie Ratz. We are going to adopt two baby girls soon. I highly recommend Rattie Ratz to anyone who wants to own rats. Tahna and her group is great and easy to work with.

Amazing group of people who adore rats and want the best for them! I have been adopting from them for years now (had made the mistake ONCE of getting 2 rats through a craigslist add and they were sick and not friendly at all, but the girl said they would be rat food if I didn’t take them, so of course I didn’t want that!) EVERY rat I’ve gotten from Rattie Ratz has been worked with and sweet! I highly recommend them and they work with you on transportation if you can’t get to an adoption event. The rats in pet stores are feeders and not worked with.

Rattie Ratz is a wonderful organization, and you can’t go wrong adopting from them. I have, and I’m thrilled with the rats I got. They were very well-​socialized, so it took almost no time for them to bond with me and make a happy little family. That means that the volunteers took the time and made the effort to handle the babies in their care, so you (and the rats) could benefit. The volunteers are also very nice and communicative, as well as experienced and knowledgeable. Luckily I didn’t need to take advantage of their low-​cost neutering for my two boys, but it’s a great option if you need it. Please don’t buy rats from pet stores! You can’t imagine how bad it is. There are plenty of worthy rats out there, hoping you’ll adopt them!

Rattie Ratz was wonderful. We had an old pair of rats and worried one would soon die and did not want the other to die of a broken heart, so we asked if there was a particularly gentle youngin’ and Nicole said there was. We met six sisters who were about 8 weeks old and adopted three. One was very sweet with us, but aggressive with Blue, so no problem with Rattie Ratz taking her back, which is a wonderful policy.
The other two, who we named Chaska and Mischief, were among the most amazing rats I have ever met. Incredibly sweet and loving, to us and our old pair. All four bonded immediately and, even with 20 other nesting options, they slept all stuffed into one little sack. It was so beautiful, and when Blue died, Matey survived her grief with her new friends.
I still miss Chaska and Mischief every day. They were thoughtful, kind, clever, and amazing. Chaska even would sing when she was happy.
At a later Rattie Ratz adoption fair, we adopted another who had been given up by a family who had become homeless. I’m glad they knew Rattie Ratz would find a home for their sweet girl. She was another amazing darling rat.

Adopted two lovely girls from this rescue. Their knowledge and helpfulness are unmatched. Thank you to all the volunteers who make this organization possible.

I’ve gotten some fantastic rats from Rattie Rats and met some wonderful volunteers as well. This is a great group to adopt from.

Rattie Ratz hooked us up with Dingus and Marvin, two stellar beasts. We were first-​time rat people and the Rattie Ratz folks answered all of our questions and gave us a ton of useful info. They also hooked us up with a cage, huge bag of food (just getting to the end after 9 months), and a smaller carrier cage (all at a reasonable cost).
The only thing they recommended that we did not like is these hard pellets to line to bottom of the rat cage. When the rats play around these pellets make it very loud, and they don’t seem that comfortable for the little stinkers in the first place. We switched to softer papery stuff that absorbs the smell (keeping an eye out for any increased scratching that may be due to bugs in the paper).
We are thrilled to have rats and love playing with them, feeding them, and watching them be rats. Rattie Ratz helped us through the whole adoption and decision process — if you’re thinking of getting rats, find Rattie Ratz.

Rattie Ratz is FANTASTIC. I highly recommend checking them out if you are looking into getting rats! Back in feb ’11 I emailed Tahna (sp?), my adoption application. She emailed me back with in the same day! She gave me advice on which cage to purchase and what kind of accessories I would and all that. Not only did she get back to me right away but she even brought rats to my house that very night! And after emailing her all day she brought me a wonderful match, a perfect trio of girls. She brought me a couple pounds of food to start out with, a hammock, tunnel a few homemade toys and a cage and water bottle for temporary use until I got my critter nation in the mail (which took like 2 ½ weeks!). She even came back to pick up the stuff I had borrowed from here and brought me more food and bedding for the girls. She is very dedicated and easy to work with. I love my girls and they are the perfect match for my boyfriend and I. We couldn’t be happier.
I had originally wanted to adopt through Northstar, due to the hoarding case I had heard about but it took a WEEK for me to hear back from someone and all she said was «Your animal shelter might have baby rats, check there first.» I didn’t want baby rats or I would’ve gone to a breeder! I wanted well adjusted and socialized rats since this was my first time.
Tahna and Rattie Ratz had me covered though. I cannot give enough praise to this wonderful organization. They are organized and extremely dedicated. Small animals are often neglected or seen as disposable and this is def not true! Rattie Ratz is a perfect example of people really honest to goodness organization.
It’s is also nice to know that unlike with petstore rats, my rats are healthy and well adjusted. I was also told if I ever needed food, bedding, medical care for my girls to call Tahna right away and I can buy food and bedding from her for a discounted price and most medical problems aside from something such as surgery should would must likely be able to help with.
My boyfriend and I are so happy and satisfied with our girls that we plan on adopting a duo or trio of boys here pretty soon. The rescue doesn’t disappoint.

The first time I got rats from Rattie Ratz was probably 6 years ago. All my rats that I’ve gotten directly through them or their foster network have been very well socialized from the beginning. It’s rare to find such friendly rats even in regular shelters that have rats, simply because regular shelter staff doesn’t have the time to spend with them. Great organization.

Some of our rats are «special needs“your 2 boys may and most likely were abused so need time to adapt and feel comfortable with hands :)

They would get 5 stars if my rats didn’t *hate* me. Great rescue/​foster workers, and all volunteers. I got 2 pretty (but mean) rats from them. They keep them happy and clean, which is key. If you have EVER wanted to adopt rats, do it from these folks!
