The lady that cut my hair did it in about 15 minutes. She didn’t speak to me the entire time which is fine because I usually don’t like to be bothered and would rather just relax. I just feel that this places rushes their customers. A lady came in about 5 minutes after i began my haircut and the woman who did her hair was even faster and sent her on her way before mine was finished! On a good note, this place is cheap, only $ 23 so I can’t complain about that. If you’re looking for cheap, but someone who spends more time, I’d recommend KK over at Just Cutts on the other side of chestnut. He’s a few dollars more, but spends way more time with your hair(and he’s quiet so if you don’t like being bothered or chatting with your hair dresser, he may be your guy)!

After my long-time hair guy moved away, I decided I just couldn’t justify expensive haircuts when all I want is a straight cut without layers that doesn’t have to be styled. If you want something quick and cheap, this is your place! I’ve come a couple times, dropping in with no appointment and no wait. There’s no pampering or camaraderie but I don’t need it. They’re fast yet thorough, which is exactly what I want.

Mary and Douglas have been the best, I have been going to them for the past, well let’s just say a very long time. The parking is an issue, but then again it is San Francisco. Best thing to do is to park in residential street most have free 2 hours limits and just walk to Chestnut street. Professional haircut for under $ 30 including tips… Won’t find that many places … Oh and for a sweet tooth check out The Chestnut Bakery down the street, Yum!!!

Douglas is the best hairstylist! Been going to him for years. Always do a great job with my haircut & highlights! Douglas does hair for our entire family and we always get compliments! Love Savvy & Douglas! All of my friends go see Douglas also! Highly recommended!

Mary is fantastic. I’m half Asian and I have long straight hair with layers. She listens to exactly what I ask of her and doesn’t cut more than I want. I can’t believe the price, either! I’m in and out of there in less than 30 minutes! So so so recommend!

My wife and I both go to Douglas. He’s very nice and a true professional. Reasonably priced and fun chatter in the seat! :) Definitely recommend Douglas to anyone looking for a great stylist in the Marina area.

Doug, the owner of the salon, has been doing my hair color and cut for a long time. I found him because I was so impressed by a woman’s hair color at the bus stop, several years ago, I was compelled to ask her who did her hair! Doug is very skilled, knowledgable, and experienced. I’m very grateful to have found him and to have a hairdresser who I can trust to do an excellent job, every time. He’s very good at listening to what I want, sharing his expertise and ideas and helping me stay happy with my hair!

Savvy Hair Salon is great! It’s an excellent value as you can get a very nice cut for a great price :) Mary is awesome! She’s very skilled, really listens & understands what you want, and she has a fun & darling personality!!! Give this place a try. I’ve tried other places on Chestnut St. but didn’t like them at all. I’ve been back to Savvy several times now and have always been happy!

As a guy who gets his haircut every 3 – 4 weeks, finding a good, affordable stylist is critical. Having just moved to SF, I sought Unilocal’s advice, and based on the reviews I decided to give Savvy a shot. I can honestly say that Doug lives up to his stellar reputation. It’s a no frills salon, but all that matters to me is the quality of the haircut. For the price, I’m not sure you’ll find anyone else in the city better than Doug. Luckily, my searching days are over.

I’m on a 3 weeks vacation here in San Francisco(originally live in Germany) and was looking for a decent haircut at a fair price. At this hair salon I got what I was looking for but probably won’t come here again. As I just stay one block away and the reviews for this hair salon were great, I gave it a try. I stopped by during a weekday in the evening and within 15 mins it was my turn already. The hair dresser didn’t ask how I would like to have my hair cut, but rather how short I’d like to have it. This surprised me a little but then again maybe that’s normal here in the States?! 20 minutes later, I paid $ 22 dollars(excluding tip) which is rather cheap around that area. While the lady really took care of me and didn’t seem to just try to cut my hair as fast as possible, the result was mediocre. I don’t need to go to another hair salon to get anything fixed or so, but there has been many times where I got a better haircut. Hence, if you are looking for a decent haircut at a cheap price, this salon is OK and probably better than others in that area. But don’t come with high expectations.

Douglas always listens to what I want and I’ve never had a bad haircut from him! I would recommend this place to anyone in the Marina district looking for a good haircut!!!

I was referred by my neighbors– three of them actually! I was lucky to be able to get in on short notice and Douglas gave me lots of attention and executed a wonderful haircut. And for $ 22. He does color, too. I’ll be back!

Let me start out by saying that I received a complete refund. With that said, I still felt the need to write a review, mainly because how terribly I was treated. Went to get my hair colored by Douglas. He turned it black. I hated it, but he said it was my only option which wasn’t the case. He could have used a color remover, but I digress. Followed up a month later and this time he DID use the color remover(to remove the color he put on). Then when he put toner on, he left the roots a little light and didn’t color some greys. It happens. I get it. I went back to have him fix it and the entire time I was I the chair, he made me feel bad. I mean, like a pest. So, when he took the toner off, the roots were hot. I mean, super hot. About 3 shades lighter than the rest of my hair. When I asked about it, he told me it ‘looked fine’ and then said«I’m sorry I couldn’t give you what you wanted.» What the heck is that? I just wanted my hair to match? He was a complete arrogant jerk. He made a mistake, ruined my hair, treated me like crap and never took responsibility for it. I will NEVER go there again.

Came here on a whim, got some dude to cut my hair. I was kind of impressed how long it took him to cut my hair. I swear it was ~5 mins. fastest haircut in my LIFE. This dude is either the hair whisperer, is just fast, or just doesnt care(i hope not?). Because i feel like my hair did not get the attention it needed, I had to subtract a star. I am going to have to subtract an additional star because I did notice he missed a few areas and so I had to ask him to trim some other areas. All in all, not a bad haircut and for the price, I guess I cant complain.

For my first review, I am going to write about my secret weapon for looking sexy(my husband made me write that). Douglas… is a stud. Six ft tall and a whiz with his hands… Sorry ladies he’s taken! However, if you book far enough in advance, you may be able to share… Ok ladies, get your mind out of the gutter. Douglas has been my stylist for over 4 years for highlights and haircut. Douglas is personable, honest, consistent, and most importantly he cares. He cannot read your mind… you need to tell him what you want and he will provide suggestions, though he’s not afraid to tell you like it is! I cheated on Douglas once and went to another salon and I had to come back to Douglas to save me. I looked at him, batted my eyes, and wept out, «I cheated on you Doug… help me…» and after evaluating the damage done, came and saved me. Thanks Douglas. You’re my hero. There are also two other stylists, Mary and Anna, who are both savvy and friendly! The prices reasonable and you cannot go wrong with any of them. Thumbs up.. by the way they get booked up quick so make your appointment early! I love this place!

OK, so I don’t have long flowing locks. I have wavy, fine, unruly hair that is best kept in a short little pixie cut. So why was I paying $ 80-$ 100 every six weeks? Then I found Savvy and I’m so happy that I did. Mary cuts my hair and does a terrific job. I’m in and out in 20 minutes and my hair looks just as good as it did when I got it cut at those more expensive places.(Actually, it looks better than some of the cuts that I got!) Oh, and the best part? It’s only $ 21! Yeah, I’m not getting my hair washed or my head massaged or any of that jazz like I would at another salon(although I could for just a little more), but I’m saving $ 80+ so I can go for lunch, get a little Tuttimelon, and maybe pick up a little knick-knack at the Apple Store. I almost hate to write this review because I don’t want it to get too crowded!

I have a stylist that I love but she charges $ 70 for a haircut and being out of work, I figured since all I need is a trim why not a find a less expensive place. So I went to Unilocal for help. This place got great reviews, especially Doug. So I made an appointment. When I came in the receptionist called for him to come out, he didn’t so much as ask my name, just pointed to a chair. He then asked me how much I want to take off. I responded 1 inch. He asked me about my layers, I told him I like to blow dry with a round brush and have some body to my style but I don’t want to spend a long time on it. I like having layers around my face but not bangs. He began to cut my hair and I had to ask for more layers and texturing, while I was paying attention to his technique. I wasn’t impressed at all, he did the very basic cut, like something out of the box, not made for me, my hair or face. He gave me some layers and really a few snips to texture my hair. I shouldn’t have to ask for all this, this is his job to know what to do. To me a stylist is like a doctor, sure they shouldn’t do anything without asking first, but they are the expert that I want them to suggest what looks good on me and what will look great when I style it and how should I do it. I also want to feel like an individual and get a cut that is me. I would think a stylist would want to know why I made an appointment with him and talk to me a bit to build the relationship, after all that is part of the trust and reason to come back. He also didn’t really style it, he just blow dryed it using his hands, so he doesn’t know what the finished product will look like or if he should add more layers, texture, etc. The lesson here is you get what you pay for, so I’ll be going back to my stylist in 2 months and paying the $ 70 for a great style that she always gives me.

Savvy is the best thing that has happened to a Marina girl in need of a haircut that is tired of spending $ 100 on getting her locks trimmed! I strolled in at 9:30am and was out by 9:55am for $ 20! Yes you read this correctly $ 20! They don’t wash or style your hair, but if you would like to pay more that is totally an option. I think it was only $ 10 more. Anna was just what I was looking for. I told her I was unsure just how short I wanted my side bangs and so she went slowly in trimming them and continually asked me what I thought. She gave me her honest opinion and in return I left with the perfect side bangs! Also, before she cut my hair she asked if I preferred the rounded look to my layers or if she should go straight across. For $ 20(!) I felt she took the time to make sure I was going to be happy with the end result. I have officially retired my $ 100 haircut days and will now be seeing Anna on a regular basis!

This is a great place to get a hair cut if you live in the Marina or anywhere else. I have been coming here for over 10 years now and Douglas is great. The guy has a good fashion sense which seems to be an important characteristic in getting a good haircut. Make sure you book an appointment since they can be pretty busy.
