The mission of the Northern California Soy and Tofu Festival is to educate the public about the health benefits and various uses of soy and tofu. In adhering to these goals, the Northern California Soy and Tofu Festival — an annual fundraiser for the Nichi Bei Foundation — strives to be a vehicle for community-building and leadership development while adhering to the Foundation’s mission of keeping the community connected, informed and empowered.
History
Established in 2011.
The Soy and Tofu Festival serves as the main fundraiser for the Nichi Bei Foundation, and is held annually on the first Saturday in June. Proceeds from the Festival help to publish the first nonprofit ethnic community newspaper of its kind in the country, the Nichi Bei Weekly.
As the historic Nichi Bei Times board of directors decided to close the newspaper after 63 years in September of 2009, a group of Nichi Bei Times staff and contributing writers, media professionals and community leaders — encouraged and supported by the Japanese American community — set out to rebuild in the spirit of the pioneering Japanese immigrants, brick by brick. They established the Nichi Bei Foundation, an educational and charitable nonprofit organization, as a means to support community organizations, shed light on community issues and document the community’s history.
