History

Established in 1956.

The Great Highway Inn was built to serve the western edge of San Francisco. At the time, there was little to no housing on this side of the city, and many locals came to the beach for a quick getaway. Attractions such as Playland at the Beach, Fleishhacker Pool, and Sutro Baths brought families and funseekers out to the ocean, and they needed a place to rest and relax after a busy day of sunshine and thrill rides. The Great Highway Inn still offers the only oceanside lodging in all of San Francisco.

Though still owned and operated by the family who built it, the Inn has expanded over the years. The original building, which is now the northern wing, had 25 rooms. In 1959, the northern wing was added to bring the inn’s capacity to 58.
