The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square

We went there for a wedding and it was a complete joke. Upstairs for cocktail hour there were only 2 bartenders for about 150 people with 2 long lines waiting for a drink. It seemed like they wanted to have a long wait so the party couldn’t drink as much. Probably they didnt want us to cut in to their profit. «YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING». Maybe 4 waiters came around with the smallest amounts of food on there plates. Thats right small plates with nothing on it. The wedding started and the bar was closed down for over an hour and a half. Im not joking. Never saw that in my life. The whole dinner menu was embarrassing. When my fish came I had 4 bites of it and it was gone.
BEWARE!!! IF YOUR PLANNING TO HAVE A WEDDING OCCASION THERE YOUR WALLET WILL GET RAPED AND YOUR GUEST WILL LAUGH AT YOU.

Great customer service, as I would expect from an SPG hotel. The lobbies are quite lovely and the ease of checking in/​out is wonderful. However, with the rooms the walls are quite thin and I could hear everything happening in the hallway in the middle of the night when partiers were coming home, which is irritating for me as I am usually here on work trips and needing to sleep for the few hours that I can. I will say that the rooms are clean and spacious, and I usually get a room with a view of the city. The last trip I got a room on the 22^nd floor and it was a beautiful view. However, there are not many places to sit and eat something at the hotel. There is a coffee shop place and a wine bar. Nowhere to get a sandwich or dinner. I walked across the street to Daily Grill for dinner. Also, the elevators were a big issue when I was there last. Out of six elevators only one was working… for 30 floors? I had to start planning to leave my room 10 minutes before I was supposed to meet my coworker downstairs because it was such a cluster. The staff was apologetic but it didn’t solve the problem.
I would stay here again because I am an SPG member and it’s central to much of where I need to go in the city, but I would bring earplugs and plan for elevator fails in my schedule.

My husband and I stayed here during Pride weekend in June. It was extremely busy but there were rooms available. We purchased a Tower view room, which was a disappointment due to the fact it caught the slightest glimpse of the actual tower and the room was small in my opinion.
This hotel was great though, the staff is helpful and welcoming. The front desk staff member helped us search for places to eat and ways to tour the city. The elevator ride is pretty neat and most of all safe because those only with room keys are able to go on it. The room was clean, with complimentary coffee/​tea, and the bed was comfortable and warm. If you sign up to be a Member at the front desk (which is completely free and takes about 2 – 3 minutes) you receive free wifi on your stay. We paid ~600 for two nights on a busy weekend and were a little underwhelmed with the size of the room but everything else was great!
The best part was that the hotel is right in the heart of Union Square and there are many places that are in walking distance. Another neat part is that if you choose to opt out of room service for a day you get $ 5 of room credit which can buy you a Coke or a piece of chocolate. You’re able to do this every night of your stay and rack up credit to use in your room.

I had the pleasure of calling the Westin St. Francis my home for five nights last week and had a great experience! The staff was welcoming and quite friendly, the location is impeccable, the views are amazing and the room was comfortable and quiet — sometimes hard to come by in this city! I participated in the Go Green initiative and received additional Starpoints too — nice! I absolutely love the Heavenly Bed and Shower — the consistency from location to location is much appreciated too.

Great hotel and great location. It’s at Union Square in the middle of everything. My room was on the 8^th floor in the area known as «The Towers» which I learned were recently renovated.
Upon walking in, i was taken about by the grandeur of the vaulting ceilings and splendor of the lobby. The front desk was also well tended to and there was no line. Brenda was super helpful and got me through check in really quickly. Once in the room, I had a tech set the clock on my radio (I think he may have been called by housekeeping before I checked in). I called down to have a shirt dry cleaned just thinking it would get picked up sometime during the early evening, but they came right away to pick up. I also had a problem with my remote control for the tv, and again a tech came right away to switch it out.
I have to spend a week here for work and I just really feel welcome and at home so far.

My wife and I have stayed here a few times. It is a beautiful, historic hotel, in the heart of Union Square. It’s within walking distance of a number of things. If walking isn’t your thing, it’s quite easy to grab a taxi, or use Über as I do occasionally.
The check in process is always smooth and efficient. The same goes for check out.
The rooms are smaller and no frills compared to others in the city. Here, it’s all about location, location, location. Rooms can be quite pricey during peak periods. Our rooms have always been clean.
Valet service is decent at best and is quite expensive at nearly $ 70 a night before tip. Unfortunately self parking is not an option. Our experiences with the valet have been hit and miss. The misses have made us consider staying elsewhere. Parking can be a challenge in some parts of the city, but I consider $ 70 a night to be highway robbery.
The Cheescake Factory and a number of other eateries are within walking distance.
If you have time, come during the holidays. They do a spectacular job decorating.

Today, I had an amazing treat. We had to make selection for our Centennial event being held at the Westin next month. We were greeted by very professional staff at every step of the way. Of course the hi lite was our special centennial tasting with the executive chef. The options were all presented perfectly and it was difficult to make the selection because there we no weak spots… none. But what really stood out was the staff. Simply perfection. Looking forward to our event, and a highest recommendation for this venue for anyone looking for something over the top. 10 stars.

This place is beautiful! It’s location is excellent as it is in the middle of Union Square.
Our room was amazing and the service was superb.
We did room service for breakfast and the food was pretty darn good.
The bed was super comfy and I adored their robes.
I enjoyed this hotel throughly and will def be staying here when I’m in need of a little getaway!

Lovely hotel. It’s very expensive but in a prime location. I was here for a conference and the staff was all very nice and went the extra mile to help with anything you needed.
Location is right in Union Square so close to public transit (BART) and lots of shops.

It’s probably unfair to blame the hotel for this but the doorman waved us a Citiwide cab and I got in with a suitcase and my daughter stepped in after me and the cabbie drove off before the door closed and my daughter was safely inside. Fortunately, she was not badly hurt. The driver said he didn’t realize there was a second passenger (apparently also didn’t realize the door was open) and we were both terrified as he drove a long way around to get to CalTrans. I was leaving SF but my daughter stayed for a conference. Had I stayed, I would have had a chance to talk to the manager. As it is, I just feel bad and worried and want to warn others to be aware that the cabs who stop by the Westin may not be safe.
The room itself was okay.

Nice hotel facing Union Square!
When I arrived in and waited to checkin, I was amazed at the beautiful hotel lobby.
I expected the nice room same as the lobby, but unfortunately it wasn’t. My room was one queen bed room in the older building of this hotel. The size of the room was relatively small, but well maintained. It looked a bit old but it was no problem to stay in just for 4 nights for business purpose. Especially, the bathroom seems to be renovated recently, it was clean and nice.
I understand this hotel is located in the center of the city, therefore the room would be small and price is surprisingly high. But I think you can find a better room with a similar location and better price. If I recommend the alternative accommodation, I would say Villa Florence is nice place to stay in (but need to be careful. To choose the right room).

I was so excited to stay here for our staycation weekend. My parents do a weekend in SF every Christmas and my husband and I decided to give it a try.
The location is the best in terms of its proximity to Union Square so that alone gives it huge points in my book. The ground floor of the hotel is so beautiful, especially at Christmas. We have dined at the Bourbon Room when we first dated which was great and we had breakfast in the Oak Room this trip which was delish!
We paid extra to be in a deluxe room with a Union Square view. I was very disappointed in this aspect of the trip. Our original room wasn’t ready at 1 PM when we checked in so they gave us another room and it makes me wonder if the view would’ve been better. Basically there was a huge metal grate on the ledge in front of the window which totally obstructed the view. When looking at the front of the hotel there are only maybe 12 rooms that have this grating. Very disappointing.
The rooms were quite small; it’s almost what I would imagine European hotel room sizes would be. I also was disappointed with the sound proofing of the room. We could hear everything outside our window and every word of conversation from the rooms next to us. We only got a couple hours sleep one night because there was a particularly annoying child next door who apparently has no bedtime.
This review was so hard because we love the hotel itself but the stay was not as enjoyable as I had imagined it would be. My husband and I are really torn on whether we’d stay there again because of the great location and food or try another hotel with more comfortable room options. Guess we’ll see where we end up next year!

Description: My husband and I were attending a conference at the hotel and booked a three-​night stay. We were completely impressed with how ideally it is located on Union Square. We were fortunate to reserve a suite for a reasonable price, with a Union Square view. The hotel is large and quite busy and the lobby area was crowded. Though needing an update on the rooms, it was an overall agreeable stay.
Location:
The hotel could not be in a better location. It is directly in Union Square. We were easily able to access downtown San Francisco and enjoy restaurants and shopping without ever having to use a car or taxi.
Rooms:
We were fortunate to have reserved a suite. Our suite was very large, spacious, and had incredible views of Union Square (see photo’s). The décor reflected the historic value of the hotel. However, furniture was a bit warn and renovation would help to restore this beautiful hotel to a higher level. The Heavenly Bed that the Westin’s are famous for, was as always quite comfortable.
Bathroom:
The bathroom had a large soaking tub and marble tile. The bathroom was clean and well maintained.
Linens:
The linens were of nice quality, and the bedding was very comfortable.
Staff:
There was nothing extraordinary to note about the staff. It is a busy hotel with lots of conference attendees. As such, the staff were all polite, but not exceptional.
Other:
This property does not have a club lounge floor or room. The check in area is a little cramped and does get quite crowded during peak check in times.
Views:
If possible, book a room that overlooks Union Square. The views are wonderful.
Final Thoughts:
The Westin offered a very pleasant stay. I love the historic décor and feel of this hotel. The location is their biggest selling point and certainly one to consider when booking a hotel in San Francisco. The hotel was reasonably priced for the area and though there are higher quality hotels in the direct area, this seems to offer a solid value. I feel it is a four-​star property and with a little TLC toward renovations, could rate higher.

I’m writing this review form my room on the 3^rd floor. This hotel is ruining the westing brand.
The rooms are too old. There are signs of leaks on the ceiling. Every time the room next to me flushes the toilet the whole room shakes. Carpets are dirty. Toilet seat is broken. I can’t believe this is a Westin hotel.
The only reason I booked this hotel was the trust I had in the brand. This hotel needs major renovation. Stay away. There are many better options in the city with the same price. This is not a cheap hotel bit feels like a cheap motel. Completely disappointing.

A fine hotel. A professional organization to which I belong hosted a conference here, and the conference room rate was $ 189 before tax. It’s hard to beat that in this part of the city!
The room is pretty basic, but my bed was delightfully comfy and I was able to get work done at the desk and reading done on the excellent sitting chair. The shower and the bath were a-​okay, and the walls were thick enough that I didn’t hear my neighbors at all.
The front desk staff were extremely helpful. I arrived at 7:30 am the day of my reservation to attend morning sessions of the conference, and I was able to check into my room at 8:45 am. So nice!
The lobby is small but adequate and the conference rooms were fine. It is an older hotel, so the layout isn’t very intuitive. The staff who work at the lobby coffee shop are quick and professional, but the food is expensive: $ 5 for a brioche and $ 5 (!) for venti drip coffee! But that’s San Francisco for you.
Would I stay here again for personal travel? Nope, I’d choose Le Méridien again for the modern décor and the awesome floor to ceiling windows.

My favorite San Francisco hotel. Let me tell you why:
Location, location, location… if you are here to shop, to see a show, or just be a tourist, you could not ask for a better jumping off point. I come here for business, but it is really nice to be able to step into the history and charm of this gorgeous old SF hotel. I love so much about the ambiance here, and I always stop and look at the photos lining the hallways (look, there’s little Shirley Temple with the famous clock!)
I’ve stayed in the new Tower as well and the older part of the hotel. Both areas have their charms, but I do love the spaciousness of the King bed rooms in the Tower. And if you are lucky to get one of the high floors, what a view!
The bed is fabulous and the bathrooms are spacious. Each room comes with a small Starbucks coffee maker, so you can at least make yourself a cup of Joe before you need to head out for the day (although, if you are not in a rush, may I suggest walking across Union Square and getting a good coffee at Emporio Rulli).
The staff are helpful and have always been pleasant to deal with. I have never had any issue that was not resolved to my satisfaction.
All in all, this is a great hotel. One of my favorites. I expect to be back again (and again). Thanks for taking such good care of me.

Look you just can’t beat the location of this place.
Located in the heart of Union Square you have many bars, restaurants, clubs, shopping and tourist things to do all within walking distance. Even more to do within range of a $ 5 — $ 10 Lyft or Über ride. You are also literally directly across the street from the Union Square plaza and the cable cars have a stop about 50 feet away from their front door.
The hotel itself is on par with other Starwood properties but nothing special. I’ve stayed at a number of Starwood properties across the U.S. and this is one of the more bland ones I’ve stayed at. We had a Deluxe Room on the 11^th floor of the Tower Building. The rooms are okay — clean and kept up well. Found the rooms to be a little small with the same layout you can find at any hotel anywhere, ever — Bathroom to your left, closet to your right, bed on one side of the room and a TV on top of a dresser on the other side of the room. Not much else to really say about the room it was as basic as they get and not unique in any way. Looking for a place to relax in luxury and be pampered? This is not the place.
We did enjoy the photographs around the hotel with different events or people throughout history that the St. Francis hosted. There are also various display cases with bits and pieces of the hotel’s history. My family loves history and we enjoyed learning little bits of the hotel’s history as we came to and from our rooms throughout the trip.
I had some of their banquet food one evening and every morning. Again, absolutely nothing special just pretty standard stuff — blah. We did get to enjoy breakfast on the 32^nd floor every morning with beautiful views from the Golden Gate Bridge to Coit Tower. I don’t believe you need a room key to get to the 32^nd floor. I would recommend giving it a try if possible to get some great photos in front of those floor-​to-​ceiling windows.
We also checked out the Clock Bar they kept mentioning. Way over hyped. Very small in there and no real vibe to it. No beers on tap. Was expecting some local specialty craft beers or at the very least some imported nose-​in-​the-​air beers to try out. One of the beers they offered even came in a can. They pour it into a glass but I insisted I drink it from the can. Hey if we’re going to serve canned beer in this place let’s drink directly from the can in all its glory, no? Don’t mind paying $ 10 for bottle or canned beer and $ 20 for a small cocktail if they had the atmosphere to go with it. They didn’t so we didn’t spend much time there. Too many other good and fun options nearby to experience. I wouldn’t waste much time or money in this bar.
While I didn’t need assistance from the staff very often, when they did assist me they were top notch. Pleasant, helpful, and went out of their way to make my kids feel special. I’ve grown up in the Bay Area my whole life so I’ve seen and done much of the standard San Francisco experiences but this is all new to my kids (5,7) so the service and attention the staff gave made it that much more special for them. They still talk about how important they felt.
The location and staff are the stars of this place and they deliver big time. Everything else is standard which is not to say it is bad, just not unique. I’m fine with that. Besides, it’s San Francisco so all the unique you could possibly want is outside the hotel front door!

Classic iconic hotel on Union Square. It’s everything that you anticipate in a hotel like this. Great staff, high ceilings, oddly shaped rooms, Tiny ornate elevators, marble floors…
Gym is a bit cramped so plan accordingly if you want to get a workout in indoors.
If you’ve never stayed here before, you owe it to yourself to stay here at least once. You’ll find yourself wanting to come back.
4 stars just because of a cost per night standpoint.

We stayed at this Westin for the weekend visiting some friends in town. Being a gold SPG member, I prefer to stay at SPG hotels to earn extra points and get complimentary upgrades when available.
The hotel is in the heart of Union Square with name brand shopping stores all around. The hotel is a historic part of San Francisco and has an old school regal vibe. We initially stayed in the old tower where the room had traditional decorations with a chandelier and curtains that have not been changed for the past 30 years. We requested to move the next day to the new tower which was renovated last year. That room had modern décor, carpet and curtains. The big plus of the new tower is that you get to ride the glass elevators and look out the city as you go up to your room. Only issue is that the walls are super thin and you can hear everything next door and outside. Thank goodness for the heavenly beds which are amazing!
The hotel is clearly old and needs more work but the location is perfect for those who want to be in the heart of shopping central! There’s a BART station 5 minutes walking distance (Powell) and across the street is the stop for the cable cars which take you to Fisherman’s Wharf.
I thought the front desk customer service was excellent. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Even when it got busy, they made every effort to have more staff members come help. The check in and out process was a breeze.

Great location for tourists, right in the heart of the city.
The hotel is a classic old school property, still the the charm from back in the day. The architecture is cool and some views from the upper floors, if you can get access, are great.
The service was great, everyone was very pleasant.
The rooms were okay, right in line with your basic Hilton, Marriott, etc. The bed was awesome. The shower was okay, could use some work.
The primary reason to stay here would be location and of course if your a Starwood member.

This is a historic hotel with nice sized and updated rooms in a great location downtown San Francisco. I was here for a conference so my room rate was $ 269 but if you aren’t part of a group rates start at $ 700…so…it is good to have deep pockets. They have an amazing reception space on the 32^nd floor with phenomenal city views.
While the rooms are great, overall the hotel could use some updating. If you have the budget, this is a nice option.

Stayed here for 3 nights for Valentine/​Presidents Weekend.
Location is great right in Union Square but Bedroom was not what it seemed as pictured. Its pretty exaggerated. Service was okay. Good thing about this was they brought up everything we needed when I called for miscellaneous items. The service express line guy was a douche on the phone saying I can’t be calling more than twice to ask for things. Uhh, this is your job. If a guests call or ask for something, you should bring it up regardless how many times I call or not and I tipped our service guy pretty well each time he came up.
We were on the 11^th Floor, our room was conveniently located to the elevators. But the noise from the elevators kept us up all night and not to mention, the thin walls. We heard everything from running and knocking. Extremely unpleasant. I tried asking for a different floor but they would’ve charged an extra $ 30 per night. No thank you.
Other than that, I felt like this hotel is creepy when I first entered and I should’ve trusted my gut feeling before I found out this place was haunted. My boyfriend felt the exact same way but didn’t want to say anything about it because he knew it would spook me out until we checked out. We felt like someone was next to us or someone was there. Definitely didn’t feel like it was just both of us in the bedroom. The last night, I couldn’t sleep that I just left the bathroom light on. And even more weird or just a coincidence, our room number was 1187 (187 means homocide/​murder).
Would I stay here again? Probably not. I believe there are much better hotels to stay in after exploring the city.

Nice room, friendly enough staff, good service. Just a large hotel in a VERY BUSY area. You cannot sleep at night (much less rest during the day at any time) between the sirens and the street drummers. It’s anything but relaxing.

I stayed in the Westin St. Francis for one night before my return to the UK as I had to leave another hotel due to unacceptable conduct by their housekeeping staff. I was told that the Westin St Francis was the finest hotel in the city, and my stay confirmed this fact.
Pros:
— Highly attentive staff who catered to our every need including storing my luggage before check-​in, and helping me up to the room.
— A beautiful building with a grand lobby, amazing bar, divine restuarant (which I understand is to be closed soon :(It’s a shame because the steak was AMMMMAAAAZZZIIIINNNNNG).
— THOSE ELEVATORS. I went up and down them twice for the view.
— A luxurious, spacious, well appointed room decorated in a period style.
— The beds were the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on. FACT. Westin don’t mess around with their beds. Kudos guys.
— Room service was a dream and breakfast was glorious. I had the bakery selection with coffee. Delicious.
— The minibar was well stocked and gradually emptied by yours truly during my stay ;)
Cons: (only a couple)
— The TV is practically an antique. It’s not full HD, only 720p, and the remote looks like something out of the 1980s. Refresh your equipment guys!
— It sounds silly, but my colleague and I have a tradition of turning on the Hotel channel to be greeted by Mario Lopez. Sadly the hotel channel wasn’t working. However after a call to reception and the attentive work of one of the St. Francis’ maintenance guys, it was all up and running again. EXTRA EXTRA!
I highly recommend the Westin St. Francis to anyone staying in San Francisco.

The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square is a historic hotel next to Union Square. It’s located in a central area within walking distance from the BART line & several downtown shops and restaurants. The Pier, Ferry Building, Chinatown, and other SF sites are also not too far away. Historic also means old, and the Westin St. Francis is old.
My Overall Rating — 2 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Facility, Return)
Atmosphere — I’ve heard stories that St. Francis is haunted, but I didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary. The hotel is in the heart of downtown, so parking is limited. You shouldn’t rent a car anyways. The hotel lobby has a coffee bar near it, but the entire hotel feels a bit dated. It’s also lacking space to just sit around and lounge. It’s still nice, I just felt like I was in a nice hotel that never left 1985. ½ Stars.
Service — When we arrived on a Saturday afternoon, there was no doorman or bellhop. Normally this is not a bit deal, but in San Francisco you have hills & steps. Carrying our luggage up was a challenge. Also check in did not go smoothly. We had two rooms and neither room key worked. We had to go back down and the staff told us the keys were sensitive to cell phones. Considering most guests will carry a cell phone, this made little sense. It was a huge hassle. Now, to their credit, I provided this feedback to the Westin staff through a survey & they responded and said they would work on changes. Thanks Westin. ½ Star.
Facility — The rooms are small and lack modern touches like accessible outlets, USB ports, and even a modern alarm clock. The room elevators were also interesting but inconvenient. You insert your key and select your floor BEFORE you enter the elevator. There are no buttons on the inside so if you choose the wrong floor you have to exit & start over. The only saving grace is the Westin bed. I love this bed & always get good sleep. Bathroom was spacious but nothing fancy. Also, I was in the newer Tower which supposedly had updated rooms. ½ Star.
Will I Return? — It depends. If I were on a business trip this would be a good choice based on location. However, if I am vacationing, I expect more out of my room and while the Westin bed is great, it’s still an older historic hotel. That just isn’t enough. ½ Star.
My Unilocal Rating Scale (Sum of all parts):
1 Star — Atmosphere — Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I’ll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm.
1 Star — Service — You can have a great meal with bad service. But that’s also what can make a five-​star joint drop to four. It’s important to the dining experience that service is great and on point.
2 Stars — Facility — I’ll award up to two stars for the facility, since this is the main reason we go out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it’s really all about the facility.
1 Star — Will I come back? — If I know for a fact I’ll return, I’ll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return.
Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. I will sum them up to provide my final Unilocal score.

Elegant modern classic updates enshrine this great location for a Westin. They really did a great job balancing their history yet adding nice updates that are not too loud. The valet is not well visible however and it took a having to go around because I missed it. For the other SPG locations around, this has got to be one of the best given its location as well as top the line restaurants and bar. Comfort and luxury is evident in their rooms and the best part for me for how extremely well sound proof the rooms are despite the noise from the square. I agree that the check in process do take away some pleasure out of it, they seem less efficient than other locations but I would still gladly stay here again

Honestly the worst hotel experience I’ve had in years and I usually recommend the one near me. No more. My credit card was declined upon entrance and that was for 80 bucks. Really? They didn’t even try to run it again at midnight. Instead I had to give them a cash deposit (while my account has over 10k in it) making me feel like an asshole. Thanks. Get a real system that can handle transactions. I would have tipped really well

Very sad. I booked a room here through their website and there was no option of choosing a specific room type. The photos on their website are misleading, they are of the renovated tower rooms. They consider the tower rooms an «upgrade» meaning you pay more at the time of checking-​in. This was not communicated on their website and at default we received the landmark rooms, which are very old. I don’t truly care for history as much as comfort when it comes to staying in a hotel. It smells like an old library book and the dingy rooms had water stains, rust stains and hair. Its really gross seeing someone else’s hair in facilities you will utilize. Anyways, make sure you double-​check you are getting the Tower room but to be honest, for the price, it’s best to stay somewhere else.

Stayed here overnight during the weekend while my fiancée and her friends ran the Hot Chocolate Run. It definitely feels pretty posh here.
I was told the rooms can vary quite a bit in size for the same price paid. Our group had three rooms total. I did not see the smallest of the three rooms but was told it was a stark contrast to the other two. But no complaints from me about the two rooms I saw, they were enormous and had a great view of Union Square for around $ 200.
The staff we encountered were very welcoming and friendly. They provided the kids in the group with stuffed animals of the hotel mascot «Francis» the dog. We were also brought cold complimentary bottles of water on a tray upon arrival.
All your usual accoutrements are here — TV w/​cable, coffee machine, ice bucket, glasses for water, stocked mini-​fridge. The beds we had were super comfortable.
I’d love to stay here again if I needed to be in the heart of Union Square.

Those extra $$$ signs do pay off if you’re looking for more of a luxury hotel. Stayed here the week of xmas and it was so crowded but that’s to be expected, it is the holidays after all.
I like the extra security they have where you have to slide your room key and type in your room floor in order to get onto the elevator. The actual room was a bit small but nice and cozy. The water pressure in the shower sucked ass though. I know it’s to conserve water but I end up taking a longer shower anyways or I should’ve just took a shower out in the rain.
Room service was great and they actually rent out workout clothes for $ 5 if you wish to use their gym during your stay. I didn’t bring my car but i believe it’s $ 40/​night for parking in their private structure. Location is great, right in the middle of union square where there’s an abundance of shopping and great places to eat. and a 5 min walk to the Powell BART (the ground level of westfield mall)
If you have a few extra dollars to spare, the Westin is the place for you!

I like this hotel for few reason and one of them is they hang a different country flag everyday! One day I was walking and saw Angolan flag, the country I am from. It was pretty an amazing feeling to see my country flag hanging in the union square! I asked them why, and they said they have been doing this for a long time, trying to show equality between countries. Pretty fascinating! We also come here during Christmas for the Christmas decorations. Which are beautiful every year. So far I did 3 years in the row and it is great each year! I also love how the hotel has a bar and a place get tea which welcomes everyone to join in and get warm during cold winter days!

Here is an update — not on the room, but on the phone operator again…
I called the Union Square location directly to confirm my reservation and this time I spoke with Angie, the angry Filipino auntie who was downright rude. I told her that I made the reservation for my parents, and wanted to pay for it. Well, she started to lecture me that I was supposed to do this a week ago if I was paying for someone else. I told her that on my original reservation, I indicated that it was for my parents. But no one got back to tell me their policy, so I didn’t have a way to know that I had to pay a week in advance. So, I said OK, I’ll just meet my parents at the hotel when they check in. But she just kept on lecturing as if I were 5 yrs old. I mean, I guess she can talk that way if she really was my angry auntie, but c’mon…I don’t even know her, and I think I’m a customer or something?
Why, Westin? Why do you guys have such rude people on the phone? Just FYI, when I called the Fairmont the other day about something, the operator was REALLY NICE AND FRIENDLY.

Great hotel! We used Priceline Name Your Own Price for the Women’s Half Marathon and we were beyond giddy that we got this hotel where registration and where the starting line was for the race.
The hotel was extremely convenient to any decent area since we walked mostly everywhere. Literally right across the street from Union Square. The beds were comfortable. Staff was accommodating. Given, everything was pricey (don’t you touch those water bottles).
For people that are saying it’s so small and so pricey, listen buddy. You’re in SF. EVERYTHING is expensive. We were beyond blessed to get an upgrade to a bigger 2 adjoined rooms with 7 people due to my friend’s hotel status but we looked at other places prior. This was significantly better in location.
Hopefully if I come back to SF, I’ll magically get this hotel again.

This would mark my second trip back to San Francisco, but this time it was for business. I figure that since I was in the area for just two days, it would probably be more suitable for me to find an inexpensive hotel.
It is located about a few miles from Union Square, so the shopping centers and the sightseeing isn’t too far away. My impression of the rooms were outstanding. I thought I ordered a king sized bed, but I ended up getting two queen sized. Besides the point… the beds are luxuriously comfortable and anything you forget to bring on your trip, you can find on any of the street corners.
The room was pretty much clean and the service was great. The location was the best thing about staying there, so I would definitely come back here to reserve a room.
The hotel is truly a classic San Francisco treat and it boasts excellent five-​star service. If you are planning to hold «the» perfect event, you should not decide on the venue until you see its new top of the tower banquet space.

Not a bad hotel! We had a pretty nice room, but unfortunately we didn’t get a view. The beds were super comfortable, and though I had planned to make use of the gym (it looked nice in the pictures), the days were too long and we would always be tired.
Staff were nice and gave out water bottles when needed. :) All in all, it was a decent hotel.

As part of our Holiday trip to the City, we like to stop by the St. Francis Hotel to view the giant gingerbread house display and holiday decorations. Not so grand this year, perhaps because of possible changes in ownership, but a little disappointing all the same. Years past, this would have been considered an «eye popper» but this year it’s just ho hum. No knock to the chefs, as I’m sure that their budgets and manpower were curtailed, but shame on the Westin for not realizing the draw to their property.
Maybe next year!

Just had a quick stay here for the holidays. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and attentive staff. Also, was a pleasure to witness the unveiling of the magnificent gingerbread house by their on site patisserie chef. Truly a marvel.
The rooms were clean and spotless, and the elevator ride up was very memorable. Still remember the feeling once you hit pass floor 20 with the clear elevators. Will return when I can.

Just home from 5 Nights in the city! What a terrific time of year to be there! If one doesn’t mind the colder weather, it’s the best!
Ok, back to the hotel. For starters, I’ve stayed here before. However it’s been some ²⁵⁄₃₀ years since & have more recently stayed near the wharf.
Well the outside is still a grand building but the inside, well let’s just say it’s dated and very possibly not changed its décor since the late 60’s.
Our mini suite in the new tower was very nice & sizable! The service staff do a great job in accommodating your request & housekeeping do an equally nice job!
My issues are with the concierge, not just 1 of the staff but 2! One was argumentative while the other, didn’t deliver on one of our dinner request!
All in all a ³⁄₁₂ out of 5 stars. Could have easily been a 4 or 4+??

Great hotel. Courteous and attentive staff. The hotel is right in Union Square so you can hear the hustle and bustle of the city. The beds are so heavenly! We asked for a rollaway for my daughter, and they «roll» in a twin-​sized heavenly mattress for her!
Westins are always our choice hotel to stay! Would definitely stay here again!

Probably one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at. I spent two nights at the Westin St. Francis for a business trip, and it was such a pleasurable experience!
Customer service is top notch. As you’re waiting in line for the front desk, there is someone handing out bottles of water and Ghirardelli chocolates. Also, you can just ask the front desk for bottled water (that they can bring to your room) if you’re not a fan of tap.
Rooms are super spacious and comfortable. I had some of my deepest sleeps those couple of nights in my luxurious king bed. It was wonderful.
Also a really great place for conferences since they have a really nice mezzanine area with super large auditorium and dining spaces with a multitude of conference rooms in the floors above. There was never a shortage of space, that’s for sure.
Gym is a little small, but great if you’re into cardio machines — they have lots of those. For people who want weights, you get pretty cramped together, but I’m not complaining… free gym :) They have a set of dumbbells and a large cable machine… but I think that’s about it.
The absolute best part of this hotel, though, is the location. Right in the heart of Union Square, you can walk less than a minute to the best shopping district in San Francisco. You know what I spent my evenings after meetings doing… It was great!

Decent hotel but rooms are on the SMALLER side. For $ 200 we were given a queen sized bed, small closet with a safe, free wi-​fi (which isn’t all that reliable), and a teeny tiny bathroom. Their shower, however, is equipped with a STRONG water pressure system and was quite refreshing! They offer valet parking for $ 58/​night with in and out privileges that expire upon check out (usually good for 24 hours). Be sure to ask for their AAA discount if you’re a member!
Front desk staff was really friendly and the worker even gave us a late check-​out (2PM) which was nice. This hotel was conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Francisco next to the Union Square Mall, Ruby Skye nightclub, and tons of small restaurants/​cafes!
Overall, decent hotel but overpriced for what it is. They have a coffee shop and a few restaurants downstairs along with a fitness gym (open 24 hours) but other than that nothing much to brag about.

Spent 5 days for business conference. Chose hotel based on location, which meant walking distance shops/​restaurants and BART station.
The facility and rooms are modern and clean. Love the gym, although not large but very upscale and you can even rent brand new gym gear/​shoes for minimal cost.
The highlight of hotel is location, right next to Union Square. Walking distance to many shops, restaurant and BART station.
The only issue I had is they would not grant my Starwood loyalty points because it was booked via my company. This is major turn off as my company always books my hotel stays and never had issues with other hotels. This only would prevent me from staying at this hotel when there are several other hotels nearby.

My friends and I had a great experience at this hotel. With its prime location, just about everything was accessible.
Upon arrival, we were greeted very warmly and the check-​in process was very smooth. The concierge gave us bar credit for drinks at the Circle Bar which was a nice touch. The actual room was pretty spacious for SF. The entire room was sleek and modern with very comfortable beds. I appreciated the spacious closet and mini powder room which was separate from the bathroom and really convenient for getting ready.
The only trouble we had is that this hotel isn’t very Über-​friendly, which I guess is to be expected of every hotel. We arrived via Über and our driver was not allowed to drop us off in front of the hotel because it was reserved for taxis. A little frustrating but not a deal-​breaker…

This place has gone downhill over the years. Great location, and generally attentive wait staff. Arrived for one night on July 4^th. Arrived for ten minute wait in the garage to valet park (!), 15 min line in the lobby to check-​in and then went to room 542 — the smallest hotel room we have stayed in ever in SF! You couldn’t fully open the closet door because it hit the bed, and the view was 18 feet away from another room and a bunch of brick. No warning at the front desk about this. 15×11 room (plus bathroom). (Just read the fine print in the hotel web site and they say this room is 150 sq feet, with no view and cozy for one person — none of this was apparent when we booked the room)
Went down to the lobby bar for a drink before our event, and had the feeling we were in a greyhound bus terminal. Families were sitting/​sleepin in the bar area, lines of luggage and people people.
Came back about 11:30 and all the bars in the lobby were shut down except for one dark, noisy lounge. Ordered room services wine (it was delivered promptly) and cheese — and even the delivery man commented that the room was tiny.
Confusing elevator setup that didn’t work correctly with my room key for first several elevator rides. Hotel guests were kindly explaining to 40 percent of the other passengers to work the system.
Can’t wait to leave this place and never come back.
Very sad — this place is a San Francisco institution with a lot of history.

Love staying in old hotels and when I can earn Starwood points at the same all the better. The Westin is a short 3 block walk albeit slightly up hill from the Powell St BART station making it a snap to get to from SFO which I did this trip. It’s a little confusing when entering the lobby as to where to check-​in but just keep walking straight back and you’ll find the registration desk. To their credit, there were several helpful staff available to point me in the right direction.
I was assigned a room on the 28^th floor of the tower which from the street I didn’t realize was even there let alone went up that high. It’s actually 32 floors tall. My room had a commanding view of downtown and the bay behind it. I loved waking up every morning to that view as well as seeing it light up at night.
My bed and the room in general was very comfortable. Everything was in working order and in great condition. My only minor complaint was the bank of elevators. They are computer controlled with you preselecting your desired floor before getting on. Guess it is more efficient and keeps folks off floors they don’t belong on but if it reboots like it did once for me you get to ride all the up and back down while watching a Windows XP logo on the screen.

+ CableCar, Taxi und Tourbusse fahren direkt vor der Haustur ab
+ erstaunlich schnelles, kostenloses WLAN (zumindest wenn man diesem Club beitritt, das ist allerdings auch kostenlos)
+ bequeme Betten, allerding recht weich. Ich mag das, weiß aber dass das nicht jedermanns Sache ist
+ kräftiges, heisses Wasser ist in der Dusche
Ok:
0 Sauberkeit der Zimmer ist in Ordnung, wenn auch nicht super. Der Badewannenboden war z.B. schon etwas bräunlich, die Oberflächen teilweise schon recht sichtbar abgenutzt, insgesamt aber sauber.
0 Einrichtung der Zimmer zweckmäßig, aber für meinen Geschmack nicht besonders ansprechend
Negativ:
— die Außenaufzüge mit Glaswänden sind nichts für Leute mit Höhenangst
