Description

History

Established in 1928.

The garage building at 1550 Union Street was built in 1923 as an overnight parking garage, open 24 hours a day. In 1928, LeRoy DeMarta took over the garage and established an automobile business that included parking, repairs, parts, body work, tires and acessories.

The business evolved into a automobile shipping business and a neighborhood auto repair shop.

Bob Bartunek, who started working at the Union Garage as a teenager in 1937, purchased the business from Mr. DeMarta in 1966. He continued operating the garage as an auto repair and storage business from 1966 to 2001. In 2001, Mr. Bartunek’s son, Jon, purchased the business and continues to operate the Union Street Garage as a neighborhood auto repair shop.

Meet the Business Owner

Jon B.

Business Owner

Jon is the owner — operator of the Union Street Garage. He literally grew up here at the garage, as his father worked here from 1937 and then bought the business in 1966.

Jon has very fond memories of spending time at the garage as a young person, helping his father and the other employees.

If you visit the garage, it’s easy to see Jon’s interests outside of the auto repair business. He is an avid cyclist, often commuting from San Rafael on his bicycle. And, he loves to travel.

Jon and his wife, Debbie, have two children, Katie and Christopher.
