New Insight Optometric Center

End up this store scams. They will push their hardest selling their old and expensive brands glasses and tell you that is the cheapest and with a discount even when it is 20~30% higher price than other stores. avoid this store at all cost ! i would give a 0 star if possible.

The 1 star is for how they run this practice. Do your own research before you set foot here… I’ve been a patient since I was a kid. After a long gap, I decided to return for an appointment. I noticed questionably fishy things (things I didn’t notice when I was much more younger…) and yet I didn’t know enough to dispute them.
Here’s how my recent visit went down:
(1) Eric fed me the wrong information about my annual eye exam co-​pay, saying that it was the difference between what they charge for the exam and what my insurance is partially paying for. Wrong… My co-​pay was supposed to be a fixed price of $ 10 (already pre-​determined by my insurance company), but they led me to pay some arbitrary sum that was more than what I was supposed to pay.
(2) The saleslady attempted to sell me a year’s supply of contacts for $ 300 when other retailers were selling them for $ 200 or less. When I told her about this, her seemingly friendly face turned outright cold. She went back to Eric to re-​adjust the price. The new price was still slightly higher (9% more) than the retail price and she told me it was because of «sales tax»…
(3) The saleslady charged me a «materials» fee when I only wanted contacts (and no glasses) for the year. Something didn’t sit right with me so I called my insurance company a few days later to discuss this and they told me they were not supposed to charge me that fee…
(4) They seemed loosey-​goosey (including the optometrist) when I asked for my prescription after my exam. I asked a few times and they wouldn’t directly answer me on that. I finally got it the week I came back to pick up my stuff.
Ultimately, I was able to re-​negotiate but I still knew I was being ripped off. I really did not appreciate how they treated me like I was some fool and expected me to blindly agree to everything.
***As a patient, these are the basic things you should know before you specifically go here or anywhere else***
(1) Research what retailers are charging on the eyewear you need.
(2) If you have insurance, know your coverage and co-​pays. THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Call your insurance company and ask what your provider should be charging you (co-​pay should be a fixed, pre-​determined price for the regular eye exam). Know your coverage before you go.
(3) Per vision insurance policy, you should NOT be charged a «materials» fee if you are only requesting contact lens after the annual eye exam. A materials fee can only be charged on glasses.
(4) Per the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) prescription release rule, «eye care practitioners [must] provide patients with a copy of their eyeglass prescription upon completion of an eye examination». In summary, you have the right to your prescription after your eye exam whether or not you choose to buy your glasses/​contacts at the center– no questions asked. Asking for your prescription afterwards also should not cost you a single penny. By law, no eye care practitioner can play games and withhold this information from you.
(5) Per Section 225 of Regulation 1592 (California State Sales Tax Law), there is no sales tax on contact lens and eyeglasses sold on prescription of an optometrist. If you’re negotiating prices, be aware if the saleslady adjusts your price around the retail price and claims the difference of their slightly higher price is because of sales tax. That is 100% incorrect– the medical insurer (you) is not the consumer. The sales tax falls on the optometrist, who is considered the consumer, when they first purchase the optical goods from the manufacturer. Therefore, no additional sales tax can be applied on your behalf.
(6) They quickly scribble down your charges on a small piece of paper. Ask for an itemized, signed, dated final receipt (if you can) in case you have questions in the future.
(7) You have to know how to bargain. Question all of your charges! When they say you’re getting a «discount», you might not be getting a discount. If you did your research, you’ll know they’re planning to mislead you.
Research, research, research! Or else they will take advantage of your wallet, insurance plan, and patient rights… Don’t fall so easily for their friendliness, it’s there to throw you off. If you’re wise enough, you’ll know it’s all a show. As a fellow Unilocaler has pointed out, they seek to «lie to young and poorly educated people». This is why you need to know your patient rights and insurance coverage by heart! [If you feel like a staff is trying to mislead you, call your insurance company while you’re there and let’s find out who’s really right.]
This entire experience made me feel like I was bargaining at some pawn shop more than I was visiting an optometry. Needless to say, I won’t be returning after this visit. They have cheated me and the principles of running an honest business.

They are really pushy with selling you contacts that you do not need. They will recommend a brand that they will make more money on rather than what is more comfortable for you. I had my contact lenses fall out several times because the fit was horrible yet they kept on trying to push the same brand on me because the markup was higher. Horrible, horrible salespeople and business sense. Never coming back.

I have been going to New Insight since… since…idk when. definitely more than 7 years.
ERIC is BEYOND nice. actually the entire staff is beyond friendly and attentive!
Since I have been a loyal customer, I’ve never called other optometric centers to get estimates for contacts/glasses.The main complaints I see on this Unilocal page are the prices and the service. I agree the prices can be a bit hefty but service is definitely nothing short of perfect.

BTW, have you tried BioFinity? it is GREAT. I have a bit of astigmatism and dry eyes; this brand just suits me perfectly!
Glasses: (Ray Bans) super thin lens (my vision is terrible –6.50)

They’re great! Everybody on staff was super quick in getting my lenses ordered and my glasses fitted. I went in on a Monday and by Wednesday afternoon the called me to tell me my glasses were ready to be picked up! The staff was very patient when I asked them to adjust my glasses after I tried them on. Overall, my experience was quick and painless.

These guys are crooks… Unilocal wasn’t around when I first went to see this doctor. They lie to young and poorly educated people. When I was younger, they told me that they do don’t write prescription for contact lens and glasses and that if I wanted them I had to buy from them. These guys are greedy and are breaking the law… avoid them!

I have been coming here for about 6 – 7 years. Before their employees were every nice an helpful. But I just went in to see if I can get my eyes check. The front desk girl was nice and ask for my information so she can look for my file. Then I got switch to a mid age lady who was rude as fuck. Her bitchy attitude was not needed. She told me I need a referral from my doctor to get my eyes check. That was fine since I just want my degree so I can order my glasses online. She then told me how my degree wouldn’t be the same, but I didn’t care. I went to my doctor to get my referral. My doctor said I didn’t need a referral –_​– wasted my time and gas.

Eric is the best! He absoutely when out of his ways to help me out with getting my check up done even with my crazy impossible schedule! Just like several fellow Unilocalers I’ve been here since I was like 10 so they definitely maintain a lot of loyal customers. Mostly I know that customers are back because of Eric, I have ran into some associate there that aren’t the nicest but Eric just always seems to know what the need of his customers are. Thank you Eric!

I’ve been coming here for at least 15 years now. Honestly, I don’t know if their prices are still great though that was the reason I came in the first place. When I was a young teen, I called around to get prices and this place had the best price so I came here. Since then, I’ve kept coming back because the service is good. It feels good going to a place where they know your name and appreciate your business. Seriously, I walked right by Eric (in charge of the front office) while walking to the gym and didn’t see him, and he still said hi to me while walking by. I had to turn around to see that it was him. He knows my siblings by name, what they do, and ask about them and how they’re doing. Anyway, so service here is good. Again, I honestly don’t think they’re the cheapest anymore compared to all their Chinese competitors, but the prices seem reasonable. I remember being a kid going to some Chinese place that didn’t even have me try on the glasses when I picked them up, so I wore crooked glasses through junior high. Here, they have you try it and adjust the glasses so that they look and feel right. Also, I’ve brought in sunglasses I bought elsewhere and they’ve fixed them for me for free. I haven’t had to fix any glasses I bought from them (so their glasses are pretty good, I guess), but I’m sure they would do it for free also.
Now onto the actual doctor. The owner doesn’t work on weekends anymore since he has a family and can afford to hire others to work the weekends. Appointments are more convenient for me on the weekends so I always get the new young doctors. This actually isn’t a bad thing because they’re thorough. Actually, the owner was also thorough back in the day when I saw him. He used to lecture me about my eyes being dry because I wore contacts too much. Anyhow, I only kind of had an issue once and the doctor seemed correct in telling me what the problem was and how to fix it. I did what he said and it solved the issue.
So, if you’re really on a tight budget and service is not an issue, you may shop around and go somewhere else (or here if their prices are still the best). But I do recommend this place if you want service at a reasonable price at a place that appreciates your business and treats you well.

Mom and pop shop. small interior but cozy. They speak every language that is spoken in the San Gabriel area except Spanish. the female optometrist was nice and helpful.
I came here only for an exam. They normally charge $ 65 just for a simple eye exam but the weekend I went they offered a promotional price of $ 45. Normally, their local competitors charge $ 39. I called before I arrived and the man over the phone was very clear that there was a long wait to see the optometrist but welcomed me to wait. I appreciated his honesty. While waiting, the staff continuously apologized for the wait.
I WOULD recommend this place to anybody who needs an eye exam. The experience was pleasant and cordial. However, I would recommend this place only for weekdays. Needless to say, my wait was long (over an hour).

I had my checkup and decided to bring grandma in for
my second visit so that she could help me pick out a nice
pair of glasses (my grandma has AWESOME taste! :D)
and so she could get her eyes checked too.
llLOONNGGg story short, I got INTO IT with one of the employees
(i’d rather leave his or her name out of it.) I didn’t even bother
picking out a pair of glasses, and I STORMED out of there. I had
never ever ever ever left a place sooo mad! D: arrrg. once i got
home, i did what anyone would do. VENT. in the middle of doing
so, i got a phone call and guesss who it was?.. that same employee.
That person apologized for what had happened but i found it
absolutely appalling that it even happened at ALL. I accepted the
apology although I never went back to even get my prescription…
until today.
I got a phone call a couple days ago again from the same person
telling me that they spoke with the owner. They decided to refund
my money and was more than okay with giving me my prescription
as well. I was COMPLETELY surprised. I would have never thought
that they even cared for my business anymore. that or even remembered
me.
When I got there today that person even gave me a couple bottles
of solution for contacts and even asked how my grandma was doing.
The effort to reconnect with me really makes me reconsider
if i should return to this place hence the rating. I wouldn’t
cross this place off the list IMMEDIATELY, they are doing
SOME things right.

Used to come here for glasses every year when I still had insurance. Customer service is great out front. Office is small but they still try their best to get you in and out quickly.
Adjustments and simple fixes are free and you could drop in anytime.

Tried this place out last year and I did not come back. Frame selections are very limited, everything is overpriced (especially the contacts prescriptions, $ 160 here vs. $ 60 down the street). The Doctor here is pressured by the owner to issue Pro Clear for personal business financial benefits, rather then what’s better for the patient. The Doctor I had last year left this office and went down the street to ‘Clear Sight Optometry’ ( Unilocal that).

The optometrists are good.
The front office is not helpful. You will have to be determined and demand what you want, and generally you should avoid the cheap frames they sell. Mine lost a screw after a while. The lens fell out and got scratched.

I went to this place to buy a new pair of eye glasses a couple of months ago. The service was great. If you need your glasses to be service in getting screws put back on, it is free of charge. My son’s lens came off on one of them today. No waiting in lines. Just walk in.

I used to get ripped off from this place until i started to order online. It is unprofessional and run like a china town bargain shop. They tried to convince me the my yearly exam was not covered by my PPO insurance which actually covers my yearly exam and half of my contact lens cost. But they tried to convince me that the exam was not covered and told me that the cost for a half years supply of biofinitiy lens for 360. These contacts only cost 160 for a YEARS SUPPLY!
