Jonathan J Yu, DDS – Forest Family Dentistry

Dr Yu has been working on my teeth for over 10 years (I’ve followed him from place to place and now he has his own practice). He is genuinely caring, gentle, trustworthy and because I inherited naturally weak teeth (thanks mom!), I appreciate his meticulous nature.
Besides the normal: extractions, working on my cavities, cleaning, etc, I’ve done extensive cosmetic dentistry with Dr Yu to fix my front chipped teeth from a childhood accident, laser whitening and the list goes on.
I have gone to various dentists in my lifetime prior to deciding on Dr Yu as my dentist. Anyone with bad teeth know how much trouble they cause and having the right dentist is invaluable to me…
He should have a ton of five star reviews here but he’s not one to self-​promote, he just does great work and people like me can validate him fully.

Dr. Yu and his staff are exceptional! I especially like Dr. Yu’s comprehensive discussion of all the options open to you to help you make a knowledgeable decision about the «fate» of your teeth and/​or gums. His work is excellent, and coupled with the professionalism of his staff, I recommend them highly.

Dr. Yu and his staff are top notch. They always remember your name and offer a warm welcome. Dr. Yu is an excellent dentist and is very approachable and down to Earth. The hygienists are excellent is every measurable way. I recommend Dr. Yu and his office without hesitation.

Going to the dentist… is something most people try to avoid, for me it was 2 years. But finally things kinda started to hurt, I knew that dreadful feeling… of a cavity or something worse?.. and i knew I couldn’t wait any longer. Through a referral i found myself at Dr Yu’s office and I’m so glad i did. Its conveniently located across the ValleyFair mall (on the Forest side).
The front lady, I think her name was Joann? Was very helpful and nice, started off with the routine paperwork, and of course, i missed a few fields, and Joann kindly pointed it out. Office is nice and clean, they played up beat music which I liked (no boring elevator music if you know what i mean)
Went in to see Dr. Yu. Oh, I should mention, beforehand, that of course I googled him. He went to John Hopkins and USC, and won some awards, kinda made me feel at ease knowing that I was in hands with a smart nerd, haha. Anyhow, he was really thorough with the examination, with the X-​rays and with really accessing my pain. Learned that i had a few «issues» that I knew were causing my pain and discomfort. Dr. Yu came with a plan or steps sort of say, of importance, of what i should/​or need to get done. I scheduled my next appointment but I came back later that afternoon for a cleaning (I went to the mall for an hour in between, how convienent!)
Cleaning went, as smoothly as it could, I have really sensitive gums, and since I have waited 2 years, there were much to be done! Oh I learned something really important during my cleaning, I had been flossing all wrong! I had been conveniently using the Glide floss picks, which I learned are Bad! I guess its called «glide» for a reason, it just glides and doesn’t really clean too well. My hygienist, Gloria, recommended that i use Gum Care floss that is soft woven, its thicker. And did you know you have to floss until you here a squeeking sound? thats when you know you are clean. Thanks Gloria! you totally changed how I floss!
Ok, so last week, I went back for my actual treatment, and what can I say, it was the most painless (well​.as painless could be) filings I ever had, and trust me I had plenty, more than half my mouth are filings (don’t judge, i like sweets) Dr. Yu made sure that I was comfortable as could be, he was constantly asking me if i was ok. He used laser, which I never experienced, and overall the treatment was less abrasive. He’s super detailed, he double or triple checked to see if my bite was in order and made sure that everything was PERFECT! Which it was. And you gotta love Erica’s (the assistant’s) sense of humor, they make a great team.
I will be definitely coming back here for my regular dental needs, no need to go anywhere else, you know when you find that perfect hair dresser, you can’t go to anyone else? That’s how I feel about Dr. Yu and his team, no need to go anywhere else! Finding a good dentist is hard, but now i found a GREAT dentist :)

Dr. Yu and staff are awesome — I know that I am in excellent hands with the very latest technology (and as another reviewer said, with an excellent «chair-​side manner»). Everyone at Dr. Yu’s office makes each visit a comfortable, enjoyable, awesome experience. Very, very highly recommended!

A couple of weeks ago, I suffered from a catastrophic structural failure of a molar. A big chunk under the old amalgam filling just broke off while eating a cracker. What a panicky feeling that produced!
I remembered a friend recommending a dentist to another mutual friend, so I immediately sent him an email asking for contact information. He recommended Dr. Jonathan Yu. Close to my home, got great reviews on various opinion sites, and a glowing recommendation from a trusted friend. I called them early next morning, telling them I had a dental emergency and asking if they could possibly see me that day. Fortunately for me, they had a 10:30 AM availability.
Let me state up front that I have had a strong aversion to Dentists all my life. Every visit with a Dentist in my past has been painful, and who wants to go back to something that they know will only cause them pain? (Okay, so you guys who are into tattoos may be looking at me askance right now. *chuckle*) So, it has been years since I’ve been to a Dentist. I am fortunate enough to have good genetics, so I have strong teeth with thick enamel. I’ve avoided most of the common dental issues until now.
But I did have several cavities when I was a teenager, and they got filled with silver amalgam. Back in the day, we didn’t have much better that was affordable. Unfortunately, we now know that metal fillings are really bad for you. Not only do they have mercury in them which can leach out into your body, but they also expand and shrink at a different rate than the tooth does. Like water that seeps into a crack in stone and then freezes, metal fillings tend to cause teeth to crack and split. And that’s what brought me to that night’s structural failure.
The staff at Dr. Yu’s office were all very friendly and folksy. They did not scold me for not seeing a dentist in a while (I was as prepared as I could be to endure such scolding, but didn’t have to be). They were very up front with transparency and their conservative approach. They fix what needs to be fixed, but don’t go in for doing more than what’s necessary for good oral health. And they talked about how dentistry has really changed even in the last five years, going digital and looking for less painful ways of addressing issues. Hey, that sounds good to me.
That day I walked out with some putty protecting the exposed interior of the tooth and a date for a return visit. The return visit lasted nearly four hours, but in the end they were able to save the tooth, build it up and put a crown on it (they have a machine in the office that makes the crowns while you wait!). It wasn’t entirely painless, but so much less pain that I remember from seeing Dentists years ago. In fact, the next morning when I woke up, it took me a minute or two before I remembered that anything had happened.
Today I went in for a «regular» checkup and a cleaning. Again, the people at the office were concerned about my comfort, and did what they could to lessen the pain. I will have to have more, deeper cleanings in the months ahead, and quite a few more fillings replaced over the next couple of years, but this time I think I will actually go through with them. Having people care about your comfort when doing intensive work like this makes a big difference.
I will not hesitate to recommend Dr. Yu and his staff to all my friends.

Last month, during a routine cleaning, my Hygienist discovered an abscess. The related tooth needed a Root Canal. Dr. Yu expertly performed that procedure painlessly with no complications, and the antibiotics prescribed resolved the abscess.
In order to strengthen that affected tooth, the following week Dr. Yu topped it with a crown. That whole process was completed in two hours, as the crown was machined on site.
Dr. Yu was completely professional, has excellent chair-​side manner, and is very focused on quality and patient comfort. The results were superb, and I had no discomfort or post op issues.
