Dr. Robert Barr has helped patients throughout the San Jose area for more than 34 years. During that time, he became one of the first dentists in the United States to begin using laser dentistry, and has since become a prominent, respective authority on these techniques. Dr. Barr helped found the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry (WCMID), the World Clinical Laser Institute, and the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Her currently serves on the boards of all three organizations. He received the Leon Goldman Award for Clinical Excellence from the Academy of Laser dentistry in 1999, and was named the 2004 Clinician of the Year Award by the WCMID.

Dr. Barr’s expertise in modern dental techniques has been recognized on television and in print. He continues to lecture internationally, including faraway destinations such as Australia and Asia. At the core of his career, Dr. Barr continues providing excellent service as a restorative, cosmetic and general dentist at his San Jose office.

I went to Dr. He overcharges for everything. I’m sorry, but I should not have to pay out of my pocket for consultation and XRay Especially when I have excellent dental insurance! Another example of their overcharging: I need a crown on one of my teeth, Dr. Barr charges (after insurance) $ 486.71, the dentist I am going to now (who is EXCELLENT by the way) is charging $ 0 after insurance!
If you are willing to give your money away and spend thousands of $ this is the place to go! If you care for your money this review will help you to stay out of debt.

Dr. Barr is the best! Very gentle and a true professional! His office is a one-stop shop for all my family’s dental needs. His new office staff is very friendly and knowledgable. I think his prices are pretty reasonable for dental work. I highly recommended Dr. Barr to all my family and friends!

This review may be premature as I’ve only just had my initial cleaning, but I will see Dr. Barr next week for the formal consult and will update accordingly.
Walking in, the reception from the desk was warm, cordial and personable. I had to fill out the standard 1^st timer paperwork and was able to observe several other patients come in during this time. We were all treated equally stellar even with the rush of patients including one coming in quite early (hoping for an earlier start). I kept thinking we’re all pretty damned happy in here for a dental appointment — maybe they put laughing gas in the A/C?
My hygienist (?) was Terri. Wow. Incredibly nice, sweet, concerned and vigilant for any discomfort. X-Rays, the gap check part and the cleaning took about 30 – 45 mins in and out and I was pretty sure she’d forgotten to clean the front of my teeth. The scraper thing only came out once, but all else was done on some other Dremel like tool and all were cleaned. (And it’s been over 2 yrs since this smoker and coffee drinker has been to a dentist). The early patient was thrilled to be seen a little earlier and I made my consult appointment for next week. There was no up front payment, nothing out of my pocket at all, and my plan sucks ace. Truly — ask anyone on it. The worst.
The above may give an impression of one of those fast clown sketches, but it wasn’t like that at all. There was idle chit chat about this and that, full sermon on flossing, and everyone was attended to personally in the reception. They’re just really good and efficient at what they do.
So — hopefully I haven’t jinxed myself by perhaps writing this prematurely. I’ll have a follow up post the end of next week.

It appears as though my review of Dr. Barr was deleted!!! luckily, i kept a digital copy that I can keep posting. Here is what I posted previously and my 5-star rating continues after several visits to Dr. Barr:
left Dr. Barr’s office each time feeling he was a true professional, so I was surprised to find he didn’t have a higher Unilocal rating. I’m glad I went to Dr. Barr BEFORE reading the off-putting reviews below. (I chose him on the strong recommendation of my orofacial myologist, Kathy Winslow, whom I trust completely.) Dr. Barr demonstrated that his sole concern was to give me the best result possible rather than making some extra bucks.
I went to Dr. Barr as a self-paying patient for a laser procedure (lingual frenectomy). He spent time evaluating my case, doing a conservative amount of work (to free my lingual frenum to help make it possible for me to improve my orofacial function, per the recommendation of the referring practitioner). Dr. Barr wanted to be sure not to overdue the frenectomy and compromise any vital structures; and he offered to do further laser work for no extra charge if I needed it after healing from the first procedure. He then spent a lot of time 1-on-1 after the procedure to make sure I understood my post-procedure care.
I went in the day after my procedure for a post-op check-up (included); Dr. Barr asked me to come back in 2 weeks. When I returned in 2 weeks, Dr. Barr gave me a detailed examination, and because I hadn’t healed fully yet, rather than doing a second procedure, he said he would have me come back again at no extra charge after I’m healed for the subsequent procedure.
I have no doubt he’ll do fine work when I return.
About the negative reviews below, this office gives the price estimates up front, and makes it clear that some specific services are charged a premium, due to the use of a laser. I was charged the lower end of the estimate, and even the higher end was well-priced compared to other dentists who do laser procedures.

BUT buyer beware:
Dr Barr charged me $ 175.00 today (pre insurance payment required)
For a 25 minute consult!
He’s not getting ANY business or reccomendations from me!
Moral:
Ask if there are charges before u go to a consultation.

I went to Dr. Barr for years. He is a really good dentist, but he overcharges for everything. I’m sorry, but I should not have to pay out of my pocket for cleanings! Especially when I have excellent dental insurance! Another example of their overcharging: I need a crown on one of my front teeth fixed, Dr. Barr charges (before insurance) $ 2651, the dentist I am going to now (who is EXCELLENT by the way) is charging $ 1369 (also before insurance). Also Gloria is way too aggressive! I also went to her for years before I finally realized that my teeth probably shouldn’t HURT after I leave the office. The hygienist I see now does a better job than Gloria ever did and I feel no pain at all! Before I left Dr. Barr, I switched hygienists and the new one was much better. I think her name was Jessica? I hope if any one from Dr. Barr’s office reads this will take it as constructive criticism and really make some changes.

Dr Barr and his staff are friendly and attentive. I’ve been going there for checkups, cleanings, and the such for about 9 years now. There was a 2yr break when I changed jobs and had a horrendous dental plan. I was forced to go to another dentist which allowed me to compare. Not good. As soon as I found myself at a better job I went back.
I go about 3 – 4 times a year for teeth cleaning with Dr. Monzon (Gloria). She’s an outstanding dentist and super thorough and caring when it comes to her patients teeth and plaque. Through several years of coaching and quite a few sessions of pain, I’ve learned better cleaning habits and actually floss every other day (major breakthrough). I go in for 3 cleanings because I have deep pockets (no pun intended!) and get plaque buildup quite easily. Every 4 months instead of twice a year means less scraping.
The other nice thing about this office is that they are always using the latest and greatest in technology. not only to clean your teeth and shape your gums, but also x-rays and cavity detection.
I can understand some of the comments about the staff working the front desk and I can say with certainty that it has greatly improved in the last year or two. The people working the front call you a week ahead of your appointment, and will call the day before to remind you again.
One other thing to keep in mind is that they charge a premium of their dental services so your plan may not cover the full amount. Just keep that in mind when it’s invoice time.

I went to this dentist office for sometime and started to realize that things weren’t quite right. I seemed to need a lot of work done all of a sudden and the office interactions weren’t very professional. In addition, they began billing both my health and dental insurance and between both those payments and my «portion» they were seriously overpaid for a lot of services. I asked them to investigate and got the run around for months.
Around the same time Dr. Barr had told me I needed to have 2 older fillings replaced and I asked if I could wait since I had no pain and I was about 7 months pregnant. I was very uncomfortable laying down for long periods of time and didn’t think I could make it though it. He insisted it had to be done immediately. I ignored this and changed dentists. I saw the new dentist several months later and asked about these fillings. He said they were fine and healthy and it’s been 4 years now and I still haven’t had to replace them.
Don’t go to this dentist.

They called me to inform me of my appt. 3 days early and I asked if there was anyway I might be able to push it back a couple of hours. They informed me that changing times or canceling was not an option and if I did I would be charged as if my appt. took place anyways. Sorry… it was just a question
The ladies working the desk were the rudest people I’ve encountered in quite some time. Dr. Barr himself was very nice and so was the lady dentist that worked with me but said I needed to come back for a deep cleaning. I was just told 6 months earlier that my teeth were next to perfect so I went to another dentist to get another opinion (since the deep cleaning is so pricey and painful) Guess what — they thought that recommendation was crazy. Then when the new dentist called over to have my info transfer they said no.
The only reason I gave them 2 stars and not 1 was because the cleaning they did do was well done– but the overall experience was too bad for me to return.
