Moveable Feast: Southside

What a treasure! Part of the parking lot is sectioned off for the trucks and dining area. Make shift tables and chairs are made up of buckets and boards. There was a DJ spinning tunes and it was very family friendly. We had the pleasure of trying Tastee Bytes and the lady in that truck was just so incredibly nice and the food tasted great.
I think that I saw someone else mention how cold it is starting to get and I agree. Pack a coat and some wet wipes (because it can get messy) but don’t let the change in the weather stop you from enjoying this as a dining option. It’s unique and a ton of fun.
Tip: If you are coming here with kids, take a tour of all the trucks (and their menus) before ordering. Since there is such a selection, there is something for everyone.

Moveable Feast Southside is one of my favorite things ever! I always know I can come here on a Monday night and get some amazing things. It’s not too crowded if you go a bit later, so you can get a close parking spot and walk up easily.

I am a huge fan of food trucks, and I’m out to explore each one: P!
We came here, around 8 pm on a Monday night, hungry and thinking we could get some Koja kalbi burger for dinner as well as Fairycakes cupcakes for dessert.
Sadly, by the time we arrived, the KoJa truck had already left and there were only 4 trucks remaining, none of which looked appetizing to me.
So, we skipped dinner and indulged ourselves on fairycakes cupcakes. Tried several of their cupcakes; good, but not great!
Selections were definitely lacking at this location, when compared to the others, but I did love the entertainment/​music and that the food trucks were located next to the pumpkin patch when we came.
Overall, it was an OK food truck dinner experience.

Great place to go on a Monday night. Plenty of parking and the best part is that they accept credit cards! I went to the truck with clam chowder and lobster rolls… unfortunately I forgot the name of it, but I ordered the lobster roll! The bread was NOT good… but the lobster. Omg the lobster. It wasn’t the kind where it’s a shredded lobster mix, but giant chunks of lobster. Like every bite is filled with lobster. I definitely wish the bread was like a softer warm dough, rather than a super flaky one. But towards the end, I just ate the lobster by itself, and oh boy was that good. It was a little pricy though, but worth it. Mine was about 18 dollars for a regular one. And a regular sized lobster roll is about 6 inches, so the shortie roll is probably only 3 inches. I would definitely come back again to try the other trucks!

I love the moveable feast! It’s walking distance from my house, so there’s a little less guilt if I overindulge. My fav truck is Mad Mex, simply the best fish tacos I have ever had.

Yum, we ate from the «Melts My Heart» grilled cheese truck. Not your average GC sammie, not at all!
We walked around to all of the truck to see what looked the most appealing but the line for this truck was much longer than all the others which to me meant that it’s popular and has great food. So we stood in the long line and waited patiently.
The bf had the special. Don’t remember what they named it but it was pastrami, bacon, ham, pepper jack cheese, and some other cheeses with jalapenos on top on a sourdough bread. You get TWO sandwiches for one price!
I got the «Crab a Hold of Me» sandwich. It was crabmeat with tomatoes, chopped celery, red onions, seasonings, and melted cheddar cheese on a grilled sourdough. You get THREE half sandwiches for one price! I could only eat two of them & saved one for breakfast this morning. Sooo good!
It was fun and we got to listen to music but I thought it was a little too loud because it was hard to hear each other talking. Then when you leave you have a beat still in your head — no bueno!

While nothing new, food truck rallies like Moveable Feast are a great concept. Who doesn’t love a mobile food court. The Southside location has a respectable 6 – 7 trucks, fun make-​shift tables and seats (made of hardware store buckets), a live DJ and plenty of parking (conveniently located next to the Blossom Hill VTA station). Some regulars include Adam’s Grub, Treat Bot, Fairycakes, Oh Miso Hungry, Goldrush Eatery, Mexi Cantina and Sam’s Chowder House. On the night I went, there seemed to be an overwhelming number of trucks that offered sandwiches of some sort. Adam’s Grub (inventive, hearty burgers and sandwiches) and Oh Miso Hungry (interesting Asian fusion sandwiches and rice bowls with a secret miso sauce) seemed to have the more interesting offerings. Both items that I sampled were solid– the Drunken Master (pulled pork, slaw, muenster cheese, BBQ fusion sauce topped with a fried egg on a brioche bun) from Adam’s Grub was my favorite. The pulled pork was decent (after the pulled pork at Morgan’s in Brooklyn, most pulled pork tastes tough and bland to me) but the pairing with the slab of muenster cheese, fried egg, bbq sauce on the brioche bun really made it quite delicious. The Mongolian beef cheesesteak (as amazing as it sounds) from Oh Miso Hungry was unfortunately a bit disappointing. They skimped on the beef and the bread was not as garlicy or as buttery as advertised.
Moveable Feast has a good deal of potential– and if anyone from MF is reading, some thoughts on room for improvement:
– More drink selections and maybe even alcohol? None of the food trucks offered non-​bottled beverages (and even the bottled variety were generally uninteresting). We were done eating in 15 minutes and had no reason to stay. Aside from having something delicious to wash down the eats, adding more beverage-​focused vendors would give people a reason to linger and to enjoy the fun set-​up/​music. Alcohol would definitely get people to linger longer (and make a second round of the food trucks), bring in a higher profit, and attract more young people– but it certainly also gets tricky. Liquor licenses can be expensive and tough to get. And given that this location is a place most people have to drive to reach– drinking may not be a good idea. But food for thought for some of the walkable locations.
– Entertainment/​shops/​something to keep people there. Along the same vein as above– there’s no reason for people to linger after they eat. Adding more entertainment or little craft/​music/​hobby-​centric stands/​shops would give people a reason to stay (and eventually eat more food).
– The price point for some of these food trucks is unfortunately high for what they are. While the quality of the truck offerings are certainly higher than that of your average Mexican taco truck off the side of a highway, I’m not sure the $ 10+ price tags on some of these sandwiches are justified. A slightly lower price point would encourage more eating.

This was my first food truck experience. I didn’t know what to expect and had high hopes for what my friend had mentioned to me about KoJa Kitchen. I knew the prices weren’t going to as low as I wanted them to be, but eh, I went for the experience. We got their early. The place was scarce, but there was about six food trucks available, a bunch of bucket seats, some hanging lights, and children running around. I liked the feel of this.
KoJa kitchen was awesome. Decided on the Kamikaze Combo with the beef KoJa and kamikaze fries with a Coke. Don’t forget the drink. The combination of all this goodness worked perfectly. I ended up ordering a second order of Kamikaze fries. It was just hit the spot so well.
I also had the chance to check out Treatbot and snag a bit of their Horchata ice cream. Thumbs up to the max on this.
And lastly, people running the food trucks are friendly and very easy going.

I love Movable Feast but am disappointed when it comes to the Southside.
It seems like there are a few trucks that are regulars, and others come and go. The ones that come and go are sometimes great. The problem is they do not come back. There is not enough of a diversity in flavors with the trucks that are regulars. They are all alike.
I love riding my bike there, but if Treat Bot (which is awesome) is the only good truck there, I am exercising just to get ice cream! HA! :) That’s not so bad, but I would prefer some real food for my work out.

Still the best. I was actually on my way to Pinkberry on Blossom Hill… And I forgot it was Monday Movable Feast Day! We passed it and I had to u-​turn just to try Treatbot!
Friend and I tried the Ube (purple yam) and Graham Crackers & Milk. Kid’s size $ 3 each. Total of $ 6. Both flavors were good. The texture of the ice cream was smooth and a little icy. Pretty different and neat. It is decently priced for the amount unless you want a ton of ice cream, I suggest you go elsewhere. Yums, hit the right spot!

Came here for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed the food with my younger brother!
We came a bit early so we were able to see them set up, watch the trucks roll in and got to experience delicious food.
As we were watching many of food trucks prep and get ready for their typical Monday night, we decided which trucks looked good and looked over their menus to get a feel of the ones we weren’t so familiar with.
We decided to try Blast Off, Chairman Bao, MoGo BBQ and Fairy Cakes.
What we got: Asteroid at Blast Off, Pork Belly & Braised Pork at Chairman, Tri Animal Burrito at MoGo and Boston Cream Pie, PB & Jelly, Banana cupcakes from Fairycakes.
All were really good, the price may be a little steep for street food, but it’s well worth it! Most of the trucks had lines, which meant all of them were good. That’s just my logic!
Can’t wait to come back again and try Koja Kitchen!
Love the spacious amount of parking lots, it’s easy to get to, visible from the main streets and has outdoor seating with space heaters, plus music!
Also not all trucks are cash only, so be sure to ask if they take card as some trucks do!

At around 7 PM, the lines were short, but it was getting to that end of day where they’re starting to run out of ingredients for their menu. Go earlier if you can!
But, Koja Kitchen alone, I would literally come here every Monday just for that truck. The Korean BBQ Short Rib Rice Buns and Kamikaze Fries are TO DIE FOR! You must try this truck if you’re ever here. Gotta add a bit of sriracha for all you spicy eaters, but with or without sriracha, it is GOOD… VERY GOOD… VERY VERY GOOD!
The overall event itself seems pretty organized. They seem to have figured out a timely fashion for when to have the trucks there, and when to close up. There’s plenty of bucket seats too, so you don’t have to worry about having to sit on the cement ground. c: Come come if you haven’t already. Definitely try Koja Kitchen, but don’t neglect the other trucks too!

This Monday, I went there only for the Kamikaze fries! If it were warmer, I definitely would have had some TREATBOX ice cream but it was 40 degrees.
I was cold even waiting in line for KoJa but it was worth it. I first had Koja fries at work during a lunch food truck in SSF. It must’ve been several months ago so it’s been a long time!
So thank you MOVEABLE FEAST for organizing the food trucks and making it happen! A hungry girl is an unhappy girl so thank you for making me a happy girl filled with fries!

I love the Moveable Feast. The trucks you find here rotate a bit. My two favorites are The Chairman and Kojo. The Kami-​kazi fries are worthy of a last meal on death row. Seating is literally 5 gallon buckets. Tables are also 5 gallon buckets. When it was still sunny at night, people were starting to bring portable picnic tables and their own chairs. If you’re traveling by VTA, get off at Blossom Hill and walk into the parking lot. They’ve moved the location within the parking lot a couple of times, but it’s hard to miss.

First time that I came out to this Moveable Feast location this week! It’s similar in terms of the layout of MF Willow Glen. The trucks park near the Blossom Hill side of the VTA lot and the people who come can sit on red buckets provided by the organizers or their own chairs or back at their own cars.
This week, Koja still had the biggest line of all the trucks stretching at least 15 – 20 people deep. I’ve never had them before but will keep an eye out of them later as I don’t like waiting too long for food. They had a new truck called Catherine’s that was serving some interesting homestyle sandwiches like a meatloaf sandwich. I wasn’t too hungry to get a full sandwich so I passed but I’m always up to try the product of a new truck. I also got a chance to a Fairycakes cupcake… if you can swing, do the 6 cupcakes for $ 15 deal…
Traffic on a Monday to get to this location isn’t as bad as Willow Glen and Koja and Babaloo don’t seem to appear at other MF locales so I’d come back here if I saw that they were making an appearance.

This was my first time going to a Moveable Feast event and I went to it on a whim when passing by to go to Trader Joes. The location was good because there’s ample parking spots at the VTA station and there were a good number of vendors and choices in food. I had the Koja’s kamikaze fries, mochi tiramisu and rice burgers, virgin strawberry mojitos from the Cuban truck, one of each flavor of Chairman Bao’s baos and young coconut ice cream from Treatbox. I was too full to try more (tacos mainly).
I love the idea of the makeshift buckets used as tables and chairs. It was colorful, easy and fun.

Not a huge selection of trucks.
I’ve been to a few different moveable feasts and I liked the Southside location better over some others. One it was close to home and two, there was not a huge back up on Blossom Hill just to get to their location.
Out of all of the trucks that were present, I defaulted to something safe– the taco truck (can’t remember the name) and Treatbot.
Taco truck: ordered carne asada tacos while my bf ordered a burrito– we’ve both had better
Treatbot: LOVE the 408 ice cream (my son devoured it in seconds)
I really hope they add more trucks: would love the see the chowder truck as well as the shrimp one.
