History

Established in 2001.

Wood Surgery Inc. began in 2001 by Terry Moody while completing his apprenticeship with Marvin Kushner of Chicago, an industry master. After 3 years of education and hand on applications of this artistic trade, Terry Moody began to further his understanding by pushing his knowledge and research with courses in furniture history and interior design to provide conservation ethics for antiques and collectibles. Terry has developed a critical eye for visual color and color theory with a previous career in graphic arts, executing color separation film for national magazines and focusing on woman’s cosmetic advertising. He has applied these skills to furniture and cabinetry refinishing while continuing to his education. Most recently, his focus of learning and interest has been in «going green» standards with awareness of the environmental impact associated with solvent use.

I have a custom built-​in wall unit and had somehow managed to remove the varnish and finish leaving a round spot almost 3 inches in diameter. Panic! I contacted Terry and he first wanted to see if he could repair without causing further damage. Well, Terry was extremely diligent about making sure the match was perfect, and spent considerably time working to address the spot. I couldn’t be happier. It blends perfectly! Without hesitation, I would recommend Terry. Responsive, timely and an expert in his profession.

I found Terry when trying to figure out why and how a beautiful wooden, gliding rocker chair had begun to squeak more and more and gradually gone out of balance. He told me that, although he’d be happy to come take a look, really the job sounded too small for it to be worth my paying him his minimum price for doing an on-​site repair. Amazingly, he instead asked a few questions and had me send him a couple of close-​up photos, and he then correctly diagnosed the problem remotely! (Multiple screws on one side had broken clean through their shafts.) He even gave me specific recommendations for repair, including pointing me to an appropriate wood epoxy that was perfect for the job.
I can hardly convey how much I appreciate the time Terry took to talk me through the needed repair, especially when there was nothing much in it for him except for his obvious love of a job done right. There is no question that when I have a repair actually worth his time and attention, he’ll be the first and last person I call.

I hired Terry to refinish my grandmother’s Scandinavian design teak table and chairs. It’s hard to beat the quality of the mid century modern furniture.

+ ONSITE — he comes to your home and does the work onsite. So 1) it’s not sitting in some warehouse for weeks waiting. And 2) he has a vacuum that goes with the sander that makes the job virtually dustless.
+ GREAT COMMUNICATION — terry needed an extra day to complete his previous job and reached out to me in advance.
+ DEPENDABLE — he arrived when he said he would, worked when he said he would.
+ PRICE — because he doesn’t have the overhead of a shop, the price is really reasonable.
+ QUALITY — he did a beautiful restoration and I am so happy with the results.

I contacted Terry about restoring two pieces i inherited from my Mother, an old tea cart and a new but worn Bombay chest.
Terry scheduled a quick appointment to come look and give an estimate. While at my house you could tell he was enthusiastic about his craft — he saw some other pieces in the house and asked if he could look at them for his own enjoyment, and immediately started talking about the various styles of hinges or bevels or construction like a kid getting a gift. He was into furniture and he knew his stuff.
It took a few appointments to get it all done, but I couldn’t be happier with the results. The furniture looks like it had been cared for all its life instead of beaten up by s bevy of grandkids while at my parents’ house.
I would recommend him easily and without hesitation.

I highly recommend working with Terry. He refinished our dining room tabletop and did some work on the chairs. It had been in a bad storage area for 10+ years, and he made it look good as new. He gave me some excellent tips on how to take care of my old cabinets, and mentioned that I could ask him for wood advice in the future. That was just what we needed, thank you!

I have an old dresser that originally belonged to my Dad. Over the years, it had gotten scratched, nicked, oxidized, and discolored. I didn’t want to buy a new dresser, and thought it could be refinished, but I have no skills in that area. I found Terry’s highly rated business on Unilocal and contacted him. After sending in photos of the dresser, he gave me an estimate and we set a date. Terry arrived punctually and even called beforehand to say he was on the road. He worked on the dresser in my house (rainy day) using a sander that had a vacuum, so there was very little mess. After the work was done and I put on some new knobs, the dresser looked wonderful! We agreed that a «gracefully aged» look would be the best price compromise for this piece, and I am very happy with the result. I highly recommend Terry to bring your old furniture back to life.

I highly recommend Terry. I have a puppy who chewed the corners of a number of pieces of nice furniture including one of the corners on my expensive cherry wood kitchen cabinets. I contacted Terry and sent him pictures of all the damage and got a quick response with him with a very reasonable quote. He came out and was able to match the stain on all the furniture, each piece had a different color/​stain wood, light, medium, cherry, and dark stains. He was able to match everything and my furniture looks like new, and he also threw in some extra work and touched up scratches on my kitchen cabinets. It’s hard (if not impossible!) to find someone like Terry who will come to your house to do these type of wood repairs, at a reasonable cost, and he’s a super nice and honest guy.

I had a cabinet door that cracked from the bottom and top ends. I submitted a form on his website, he contacted me via email in 1 to 2 days. Terry is a real nice guy and trust worthy. I spilled some alcohol on my cherry bathroom vanity and it destroyed the finish. Based on Terry’s great reviews on Unilocal,I contacted him. He was out of town, but we set up an appointment for his return. He reconfirmed the appointment a week ahead of time, and then showed up right on time on the appointed day. He was friendly, and fixed the vanity perfectly for a reasonable price and in a short time. I was so happy, I had him come back two weeks later to touch up our kitchen cabinets. He has a graphic design background and a real sense of color and finish. Five stars.

I had Terry come over and check out 2 pieces of furniture that needed some repair. I contacted him via email, and he responded promptly (within 1 – 2 days).
He came on time and ready with all his tools & repaired both pieces as best as possible. Unfortunately our wood had a very flat finish and they hard to match (I was not surprised at this). The furniture did end up looking better than before repair though, so I was satisfied.
The part that really wowed me was that he contacted the manufacturer of my furniture, and recommend a re-​finish due to the nature/​quality of the product after assessing the damage. I was very glad he did this — I was also feeling disappointed that my furniture wasn’t holding up as well as it should have. I am now working with the manufacturer and having them come out to take a look/​repair.
I really appreciated that he went above and beyond to try to help me, after he helped me the best he could.

While Terry was out of the office, he was still able to assess my situation via pictures I emailed. He was quite honest that he could not do the job and that it needed someone with a spray booth. He recommended another place and provided a ballpark figure for repair so that I knew what I was getting into. I found this very helpful and a sign of an honest business owner.

I contacted Terry to see about getting a bookcase and desk refinished. He responded quickly and was professional and honest. I didn’t end up having these particular items refinished with him because he straight-​up told me that the cost to refinish the item would exceed their worth and I’d be better off buying new, but I appreciate that honest feedback and would definitely contact him again in the future for any wood working jobs.

Terry is a true restorer and furniture lover. He truly cares for the pieces he restores and respects their history. We had several pieces we had inherited from my husband’s family that needed major cleaning and repairs. Terry was able to tell us a lot about the pieces — history and workmanship, and repaired them to new — a new that is if they had been lovingly cared for over the years. He is dedicated to his craft and does the best for each and every piece. So happy to have found Terry! He was a pleasure to work with.

I just had another job done today… I wouldn’t call anybody else. I bought a gorgeous fainting couch from somebody and it was supposed to be in perfect condition, but when I got it home, I found a big piece of the carved wood frame had broken off. I thought it would cost a fortune to fix, but Terry Moody answered my call promptly, even though he was out of town, and assured me he would take care of it as soon as he came back, which he did. The piece looks great and I am no longer upset about it (this kind of stuff always seems to happen to me). The price was incredibly reasonable and as usual, Terry was friendly and enthusiastic about what he was doing. I love this guy and his work. You will too.
By the way, people reading this, DO click on the filtered reviews because there are a bunch of five star reviews that I know are real… this guy does great work and you can depend on him. This filter thing is ridiculous. There is nothing odd about any of the reviews and you should all know what great work you will get from Terry Moody of Wood Surgery! And no, I am not related to him or paid in any way! I just think people should know the truth and it will help a lot of people to know about him.

I have a ten-​year old French Country dining room table with an intentionally «distressed» look and finish. After ten years of continuous use (including by a child as an arts and crafts table!), the finish was shot, mostly from water damage over the years. I was considering giving it away until I found Terry on this site. For a few hundred dollars (a fraction of what it would have cost to replace this particular table), Terry restored the entire surface to great condition, including rebuilding the unique «distressed» finish.
Terry came straight to my house and did the work in-​place in my dining room, yet there was not a speck of dust in the room where he did the work.

I found Terry after entering in to a what I thought was going to be a DIY project. After doing much research and making several phone calls I finally found Terry. Instantly, I could tell that he was trust worthy, very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and dedicated to his craft. I explained to him what I had got myself into and he offered to come look at my piece in person and give me a quote.
Needless to say, after meeting him and talking with him about his work and experience, I knew I had found my guy. Whew.
Terry did a BEAUTIFUL job on restoring/​refinishing an old chaise lounge that I purchased and he also educated me about the era and style of the piece, very cool! another bonus… I knew that I didn’t have someone in my house that I had to baby sit all day (we’ve all had that scenario before).
Bottom line. Once your work with Terry you will see that his love and appreciation for furniture and aesthetics along with his high standard and dedication to his work really show true to the level of workmanship he puts into each piece he works on.
