I like walking. I like non busy trails. I like this trail. Put on some head phones and just keep going until you can’t go anymore.

When I first encountered this trail, it gave me the creeps. The parking lot is not officially open, but if you walk around the gate, you are able to access the trailhead. In total, it’s 10K around San Elijo Hills/San Marcos area, but that’s if you follow the loop. From the trailhead, it’s a great view overlooking San Marcos valley. There is a bathroom and picnic table for a brief rest break. Unfortunately, the BRs are locked so be aware of that should you decide to visit. On a previous training run up Twin Oaks, we saw a mountain biker head down the trail and wondered where it led. So Andy and I decided to attempt this trail early enough in broad daylight to see where it would end up. Yes, at first I have to admit, the beginning of the trail is a bit weary. There is a small decline at the trailhead and then the trail descends around a bend. The trail is spacious and there are fenced areas along the path. Terrain is a bit tricky along the path — from inclines to declines, dirt and rocky areas. This is a moderate hike/trail. We only reached the .5 mile marker, and decided to head back since the weather cooled and the sun was setting. Also, we didn’t know where the trail led or ended and didn’t want to take chances if we got lost! We saw 1 runner, and we didn’t get the opportunity to ask. It is advisable to go with a partner on this trail, and it doesn’t hurt to bring your cell with you just in case. From doing additional research, there are various trails that connect with this trail. Will attempt in the next training adventure!
