We specialize in builder’s and decorative hardware, fireplace inserts and screes, barbeques and accessories and housewares. We carry your favorite trusted brands like Milwaukee, Bona, Clorox, Craftsman, DeWalt, E. B. Stone, Dremel, GE, Kitchen Aid, Pyrex, TAG and more.

We have an unique home décor and giftware department, including a large selection of tapers and other candles.

History

Established in 1905.

Hassett Hardware, a family-​owned business since 1957, purchased this store in 2009 from the long-​established Wisnom family, who opened the original store in downtown San Mateo in 1905.

We are proud to continue carrying on this piece of live San Mateo history!

Eric and Richard Hassett run the San Mateo location, as well as four other locations in the Bay Area — Half Moon Bay, Palo Alto, Redwood City and Willow Glen. Richard and Eric are third-​generation hardware store owners and pride themselves on running family-​friendly, customer-​service oriented stores.

We received top notch service here! The plastic under my car broke loose and rather than driving home to Half Moon Bay, my husband and I stopped in for pliers/​zip ties to try and fix it. We got great service inside and then went out to the parking lot to try and fix the car. One of the Ace employees, Nicholas, came out to help us even in the rain. Thank you, Nicholas and Ace!

Free popcorn on weekends! Need I say more?
Aside from that, I just received the best customer service in any hardware store. I may never go back to Home Depot again.
Matt walked me through the store and helped me find everything I need. Then Mario checked me out quickly and with a couple of joked to boot.
Awesome experience all around. And the popcorn was delicious.

Amazing place! I needed one little funny screw and Enrique searched drawers to find exactly the right fit. Probably gave me 20 minutes of quality time in exchange for a $.35 item. I am grateful and know where to go from now on for help.

This store, which used to be called Wisnom’s, has been the place I go to when I need some help or a special part. The big box stores (e.g., Home Depot) sometimes have better prices, but their small parts departments are chaotic messes, there’s usually no competent help, and, surprisingly, the selection is often worse than at Hassett’s.

BEST hardware store I’ve been into. We had GREAT customer service, wasn’t sure what we was there for, but eventually with the help of one of their employees was able to figure that out. We were running an errand for mom and we weren’t sure what she was talking about. Thanx you guys

Cute little neighborhood hardware shop that’s a breath of fresh air compared to the service I’ve gotten at bigger chains.
SERVICE.
The employees are friendly and mostly knowledgeable of their products. We needed a specific piece of glass cut, and the guy helping us was very fastidious in measuring and cutting, which was appreciated.
PRODUCTS.
They do have some good sales (especially after the holidays!), but I get the impression that a lot of their non-​hardware items are second-​hand — just a little grungy, boxes look like they’ve been opened a few times, that sort of thing. They have a large selection of everything, though!

This is hands down the BEST HARDWARE STORE I have ever been in!!! Words just cant explain it, you need to go check it out for yourself. Plus when’s the last time you got free popcorn on the weekends at a hardware store! Family friendly, awesome customer service and they carry all the special things you cant find elsewhere and for less.
Oh…make sure you have at least an hour to browse, you’re sure to find some awesome treasures! ENJOY!!!

I just wanted to say I like this ACE Hardware location… btw for those that follow my reviews, I’m sorry but I’m gonna start keeping them short until further notice. I don’t like being censored and for some weird reason that is what is happening. Back to my review… haha
The only thing I don’t like is the parking lot, and the semi-​weird set up in the front near the register, but other than that –no complaints. Oh and I like that they still make keys at these stores. That is all.

This location is like a cross between a traditional hardware store and your grandmother’s house. They have everything you need, and their well-​seasoned staff are more than happy to help.
I’ve only been here on weekends, when they offer free bags of popcorn. You’ll find me trolling the aisles with a bag of buttered goodness in one hand, and a variety of housewares in the other. I recently found an adorable garden gnome ($ 16.99) that currently resides outside my apartment door. I definitely recommend checking out this location if you’re in the mood to rummage through some eclectic goods!

GREAT! SUPERLATIVE! QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE! These would be just a few ways to describe my experiences buying things at Hassett Hardware. The store has been around for a long time, formerly under the previous ownership/​naming as Wisnoms. While I think we all like to support the small, locally owned businesses, I want to shop here for even more than that.
There is something so refreshing about being serviced by employees who are trained well, knowledgable about not only the products which they carry and if they are in stock/​where they might be located, but also what these products do, etc. The sense that I received from every employee is that there is a greater level of genuine care to help their customers than I have received at any big box hardware store.
I would staunchly advise shopping at this store as they have competitive prices and it is rare to see a store with a focus on really providing quality service.

Love this neighborhood hardware store in San Mateo; can bring any project in and employees great at offering solutions and you don’t have to hunt them down. They are well staffed and stocked. The Asian gentleman offered up a screw solution and in his searching for the right one did this bit of a drum solo tapping thru all the bins till he found the right one and grabbed a screw driver to ensure it fit my project that I brought with.

Doing startup office moves is never a fun thing, nor is it ever straight forward. There’s a lot of physical labor involved and it always requires going to a hardware store at some point. Good thing my parents taught me to be handy. Cook, clean, and build shit. Needing drill bits, nails, and other tool/​materials, I dropped by here a couple of times to fill out the arsenal of things we didnt have in our new office. I found the stuff I needed 99% of the time, it was well priced and the folks are friendly. It’s good to know that neighborhood style places like this still exist. Now I love buying shit online but every once in a while it’s still good to deal with a human being the old fashioned way.

LANDMARK FOR SAN MATEO
I don’t know how long Wisnom’s have been at this very same location but probably for a very long time. They have been bought out by ACE Hardware but really glad to know they kept their name for all of us who grew up coming here.
Wisnom is like a smaller version of Orchard Hardware with dedicated employees who are passionate at helping us DYI get things done the most effective way with the right tools! They sell pretty much everything you can think off from nuts and bolts to electrical circuits to plants to gardening and to scented candles. It is truly one of the last honest one stop shopping out there where the staff are specialists at their own trade and craft!
I love coming to Wisnom to find just that little something especially when I have that hard to find gadget that I am looking for to complete my project!
