Specialties
The Big Blue Bus provides over 19 million trips each year on 20 fixed routes across our 51 square mile service area across Santa Monica and the Westside section of Los Angeles. BBB is a regional transit provider governed by Santa Monica’s City Council. Service is funded via farebox revenues and a variety of county, state and federal subsidies. No monies from the City’s general fund are used by the Big Blue Bus.
History
Established in 1928.
In 1928, the City of Santa Monica launched their first route. Choosing a blue livery, it was originally called Santa Monica Municipal Bus Lines. It kept their base fare at 10 cents for an extensive period of time. The impetus for the creation was a fare increase on the Pacific Electric interurban trains between Santa Monica and Los Angeles. Today, the Big Blue Bus provides frequent service to major destinations on the Westside like UCLA, Santa Monica College, Downtown Santa Monica, and LAX. BBB also serves downtown Los Angeles and connects with the Metro Purple Line, Green Line, and Expo Lin
