For almost 20 years, Great Labels, located in Santa Monica, has brought high-​end designer clothing and accessories from the A list celebrities of Hollywood to the closets of budget-​conscious fashion fanatics on the Westside. Imagine guilt-​free Gucci, priced-​to-​move Prada, discounted Dior, and why-​is-​it-​so-​reasonable YSL. Picture an opportunity to hang out with Coco Chanel, Lanvin, YSL, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Christian Louboutin. And for the young at heart and hip at every turn, we carry a selection of designers from the likes of Phillip Lim, Alexander Wang, James Pearse and Vince. Talk about moving in the right circles!

History

Established in 1996.

I started Great Labels with my own personal wardrobe. At the time there were only two other consignment shops on the Westside and I was determined to shake things up a bit. I believed resale-​consignment needed a middle ground between the younger thrift store crowd and the older «mature» woman who was still wearing big shoulder pads and all the glitz.

We offer young, contemporary, high-​end clothing at 75−90% off orginal retail. Everything in our shop is handpicked, and we carry only new or next to new items that are in perfect condition. We have grown each and every year and look forward to continuing to offer high-​end designer fashions without the high-​end prices.

After going through a devastating divorce, I was faced with finding a way to earn a living to support myself and 3 young children. My ex was in bankruptcy and there was no one but me to pick up the pieces.

Fortunately I had a large wardrobe that I put on consignment and was able to make a nice chunk of change to help with my ongoing expenses. Seeing how consingment-​resale worked, I thought it might be something I would be good at. I knew fashion and had been a big shopper before the divorce.

I moved to Santa Monica, found a great location, and started Great Labels with the remainder of my wardrobe. For the last 18 years, the store has done very well thanks to not only the wonderful women who bring me their clothes, but also our amazing shoppers who love the idea of resale.

With the economic slowdown, business has continued to thrive. I am extremely grateful to all who have been part of our tremendous growth.
