We are a historic house and gardens, dedicated to the memory and works of horticulturist Luther Burbank.

History

Established in 1979.

When Luther Burbank’s widow Elizabeth died, she left the house and gardens to the City of Santa Rosa. A volunteer association was formed to run the property as a house museum and demonstration gardens. The program is currently operated by a nonprofit board and the volunteer association, providing docent-​led tours, museum and gift shop as well as the gardens.

Luther Burbank Home and Gardens is a gem in the middle of a strong community. I read some of the reviews and one of them even called the surrounding neighborhood a «ghetto». I felt the need to educate a bit here. The surrounding neighborhood is the Luther Burbank Historical Neighborhood. I purchased a home right down the street from the gardens and lived there for over eight years. My neighbors ranged in age from infant to 90 years old. It’s a diverse and tight knit neighborhood filled with block parties and other community gatherings that often take place at LB Gardens and Julliard Park, the park across the street. Yes, it’s very close to town. Yes, in every neighborhood close to town you have transients walking about, mostly friendly just wanting our aluminum cans. My old house sold for over half a million dollars, and I wish that I still had that house to retire in. I’d hardly call it a ghetto. Instead i’d call is a treasure of a neighborhood.

There is a house with surrounding garden in this small park memorial. We spent 45 minutes walking around the grounds reading the signs, observing the plants, and petting a cat. The grounds have great informational signs and tributes to Luther, amazing fellow and although he passed away in the roaring 20s, his legacy remains because his contributions to agriculture were so amazing and prolific. A great place for a short visit.

A must stop for a taste of Santa Rosa history.
Drop in tours are from Tuesday-​Sunday 10am-3:30pm. Adults $ 7, kids are free. There is a free audio tour of the grounds as well.
We really enjoyed strolling around the grounds and looking at plants and flowers from the obvious genius of Luther Burbank. The man was a master of horticulture & really was a pioneer of creating new plant species. He created all kinds of new fruits by grafting.
Great for an after lunch walk. Not the best surrounding neighborhood, some questionable people can wander in. For any kind of plant enthusiast or local history buff the place will not disappoint.

I didn’t realize what a brilliant man Luther Burbank was. Claudia gave a wonderful tour – she’s very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. High recommend this tour. Didn’t know LB was buried in the front yard along with some friends. There are no markers… they don’t know exactly where in the yard!

Santa Rosa is a great place to walk around! I came across Luther Burbank Home & Gardens on Unilocal and decided to stop by. I knew ahead of time that not much was in bloom but decided to go anyway.
Because it wasn’t peak season, I had the place to myself. The poppies and a few other flowers were blooming. I found it to be a peaceful place. There was a waterfall as shown in the pictures and that was running. There were a few benches and picnic tables scattered around.
I’d love to stop by again when everything is in full bloom but it was a nice stop while walking around the city to have a bit of quiet time.

I work and used to live near this place, but I never get sick of browsing the gardens. It’s a great place to get photos. The home, the greenhouse, the flowers, the roses on the arches, cacti, etc.

Great docent lead tour of the garden and home. Well worth the $ 6. The free smartphone tour is ok, but somewhat annoying unless you follow the numbers exactly. Garden not as spectacular as I remember as a kid but then spring is just getting started. House is well worth seeing. Visited on Sunday am at 10:30am.

This place is so beautiful. They really have a lot to offer Sonoma County. I like coming here when I need some fresh ideas and a little inspiration. I also enjoy using the grounds for photography sessions for Senior photos. The place is so beautiful in the sping time too. MUST see if coming to Santa Rosa

What a lovely hidden gem. It’s right in the middle of the ghetto in Santa Rosa but once you walk through the white picket fence you completely forget that fact.
They have a huge cactus, blooming rosé bushes and of course hundreds of photo opportunities. And even better… It’s free!
I like to stop by before a movie and appreciate the beauty that Sonoma county has to offer.

We were simply delighted with both the garden and the tour of Burbank’s home. The garden is free to tour and they offer free information about the plants and the garden via your own cell phone.
The tour of the house and greenhouse (well worth the $ 7) was led by a delightful, knowledgeable docent, Jean. This was a great afternoon in Santa Rosa!

If you are in Santa Rosa, stop here to tour the gardens. The signage in the gardens and information in the brochure will introduce you to Luther Burbank, his life, and his contributions to horticulture and agriculture. The gardens were off-​peak during our visit, but we had a positive, worthwhile experience.
Guided tours are led by volunteers. Our tour lasted 1 hour 20 minutes. The first 45 minutes were through the gardens, and largely repeated information in the signage.

Unfortunately on our visit to the Luther Burbank Gardens, the tours were not happening but we enjoyed just walking around the gardens anyway. They are very well kept and everything was labeled very well. I don’t think a lot of people know about Luther Burbank but he was a brilliant man who came up with some great hybrid plants. There was one girl there working in the gardens and she gave us a quick history of Luther and that he was buried on site. When the flowers are in bloom I can imagine what a pretty sight it must be.

This little gem in downtown showed me the wonderous beauty of the «tower of jewels» ecchium. The garden is not too big, but it is a fun little get away just at the end of down town and before you hit the super seedy part of Santa Rosa Avenue. It would be interesting to know what the street was like way back when. Hmmm…
Anyway, I think this is a good place to soak up some local culture, see some beautiful plants and literally stop and smell the roses-​there is an amazing rose garden when in season.

Been here a bunch of time for photo ops but finally took some time to look around and be a tourist. When I discovered that you couldn’t get into the house without being part of the tour, I said «the heck with that!» I marched right into the carriage house and paid the tour. $ 7 pp= deal!
Not only did we get a personalized tour (they ask you how much time you have available), but if you ask the right questions, you might learn some stuff about the hometown hero that you might not find in any memoirs.

Nice gardens, and a nice house. The greenhouse is worth looking at; it survived the 1906 earthquake without losing a single pane of glass. Luther Burbank is buried on the grounds.
We enjoyed what remains of the Luther Burbank estate. What was a legend, even part of the English language, now seems long ago and far away. The gardeners are doing all they can to collect and display his creations, but they are not sure they have the right specimens in many cases. Apparently, Luther Burbank did not keep many notes, and what he created is elusive today. He was a nurseryman and a breeder first, and a scientist a distant second.
The rose garden was very pretty in July, and the «touching garden» was a real delight of texture and scent. I picked up a plant list from the edible landscape garden for my own notes. The guided tour, while not exactly a Disney production, was well worth the $ 5 ticket.

If you go on a tour to Luther Burbank Home and Garden it’s $ 4pp. If you pay the $ 4 you can see the inside of the home with a docent, check out the greenhouse, walk around the garden; otherwise save your money and check out the garden for FREE.
Nice rose garden. We went 9÷10÷05 and the roses are still nice. Go for the garden.
