We were visiting the area and needed a nice, quick lunch. So we found this on Unilocal and the food was very good – we found the hot dogs juicy and had no unfortunate side effects that you can sometimes have with hot dogs – that was great! Not sure if the area is coming or going but the crowd was nice. Staff was friendly and the soup was nicely homemade.

Awesome family owned diner. Best pancakes this side of the Nile river. People who own it are extremely friendly band generous. Sure, it’s no fancy restaurant, but that’s what you sign up for going to a diner. They are the best at what they do.

Friendly service, fast hot food. Great Hot Dogs. My first visit they made me feel like a local. Would return if ever back in the neighborhood.

I came here on business and was really craving a hot dog. I saw the reviews comparing this place to coney island in Detroit, so I thought I’d drop in. Now I’ve never had coney island in Detroit to compare this place to, but I have had coney island in Pampa, TX(which is phenomenal btw). This place didn’t quite do it for me. Don’t get me wrong, the small diner atmosphere was awesome! I love little whole in the walls. But the hot dogs were below average. I’ve had a lot of dogs in my day and this ranks low in my book. I did not like the meat sauce at all. I got a side of French fries as well. They were average as well. Maybe I should have got something else, but all the reviews suggested I go with the hot dog. I’d give this place 2 stars based off the food, but I add one because I really liked the people and the diner itself.

Love eating here. Great diner feel with the bar and the service is great. Always see the same people working and they are always friendly. The food is well priced and delicious.

Nice place for a hot dog in Capitol region. Wait staff is nice and polite. Booths are small and tight, so if you area tall person best to get food to go. But this is a place I will go out of my way to go to.

You just ain’t had a good dog if you ain’t had newest dogs… The perfect meatsauce mild spices, no wet sauce or grease dripping all over your shirt — the bun stays dry and they are just scrumptous! When my grandfather was a kid he would come sit at the same counter and get 2 dogs with the works for a nickel! Although much in this city has changed this place remains the same — BUSY… Reliable friendly service great simple food — wonderful soups! And although the neighborhood is somewhat scary there’s always a cop around — usually stuffing their face. I hope this place is here forever!

Authentic should be measured by using Newest lunch as the yard stick. Food– 3.5 Stars Nothing is going to be gourmet, but it’s all well executed. Hot dogs with Michigan sauce, mustard, and onions are just pure awesome. French Fries and Onion rings came out burning hot and were good. Service– 5 Stars Everyone is super nice. Pay up front when done. Atmosphere– 4 Stars Old school, also slightly dingy. Value– 5 Stars $ 1.85 hot dog with meat sauce.

I had actually never been to this place until a few months ago, and I’ve worked in Schenectady for several years now. It is what it is(as much as I hate using that phrase): a nice, simple diner serving simple diner foods. Their hot dogs are good. I still prefer Mike’s a bit more, but either way you’re making a good choice. Quick, simple, cheap, and good… you can’t really ask for more when you’re looking for an easy lunch.

Something about old-time counter-service hot-dog joints makes me want to order coffee with my dog. It seems like an unusual pairing. But there is something kind of perfect about it. Newest Lunch is another one of these wonderful places. And it’s great. Great flavor. Juicy dog. Super soft white bun. Satisfying proportions of mustard /meat sauce /raw onion. The only thing; the one drawback, was that the dog itself had no snap to it. You know, that great toothsome bite you get when your teeth break through the perfectly fried casing. It’s the best part of a dog done on the griddle. What it looses in snap, it gains in juiciness. I think I may have left my heart in Michigan at this place Still, as opposed to many of the other dog places in the area, Newest cooks up full size versions of the original Michigan. And while I appreciate innovation, and regional idiosyncrasies, I think the mini dogs throw off the critical proportions. You should go. It’s delicious! I ordered my dog with a side of fries(and a coffee, obviously). Otherwise, I might have been tempted to eat two dogs. And that just seems like a recipe for disaster.

This is it — the best hotdog with meat-sauce in the world as far as I am concerned. My dad grew up in Schenectady and used to take my brother and I here when we were kids. I make sure and hit this place every time I am in the area. I’ve only ever ordered the hotdog with meatsauce. . I’d try something else but why screw around with perfection?

I’ve been coming here since I was a little kid, and I just love it more than I can even say. But obviously, I’m going to try to say SOMETHING. Where to start? It’s best-known for the hot dogs and accompanying onions/meat sauce combo. I am not a huge meat person, and the idea of putting meat sauce on something that is already made of meat admittedly, in other contexts, grosses me out. But here– it’s manna from heaven, I swear to god. Serving you your dogs(or burgers, or EXCELLENT soup, or amazing rice pudding, or… shall I go on?) will be the nicest people you have ever met.(I have harbored a lifelong crush on a guy that works here… I’ll carry it to my grave!) At lunchtime, expect to see the stools at the counter packed with policemen, county workers, local pols, and lots of other colorful characters. You will be remembered when you come to the Newest– and you will also remember your trip. One of my all-time favorites, anywhere.
