Specialties
Umbrella of the Capital District is a nonprofit agency helping senior citizens and persons with disabilities live comfortably and safely in their own homes. By providing low cost home maintenance and a wide variety of personal services, we help our members keep the two things they cherish most… their homes and their independence.
History
Established in 1995.
Umbrella was founded in 1995 as a fresh idea to meet in
particular the rising home service needs of senior citizens,
retirees, and persons with disabilities. The great majority of
these individuals enjoy living in and wish to remain in their
own homes and neighborhoods. However, many no longer
want to or can easily cope with the often strenuous daily and
seasonal responsibilities of home maintenance.
Enthusiasm for membership in Umbrella is spreading in the
Capital Region! Serving Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga and
Rensslear counties of New York State.
Meet the Business Owner
Ron B.
Business Owner
For the past 13 years Ron and his partner Elaine Santore have directed the steady growth of a unique program that help seniors and persons with disabilities keep the two things they cherish most… their homes and their independence.
One of the most innovative aspects of Umbrella is its’ workforce. For the most part, Umbrella uses senior citizens with as much as 30 years of experience in various trades. Equally important, because Umbrella handypersons generally only work to supplement their income, they are able work for less. Throughout the Capital District more than 100 retirees currently provide services to more than 600 households 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A 1972 graduate of the University of Miami, for more than 25 years Ron dedicated his professional life to the development of community-based services for persons with disabilities, the closure on New York State institutions for the mentally disabled and the creation of consumer driven human service models.
