History

Established in 1995.

Ever since Hawaiian Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku introduced surfing to North America in the early 1900s — and it’s even more true today — the idea of harnessing the power of an ocean wave and riding it on a magic carpet called a «surfboard» has captivated the imagination of people throughout the world. Anyone who has seen photos, watched videos or witnessed a live performance of surfing has dreamed of trying the water sport.

It is a desire to fulfill that sense of wonder and possibly pass along some of the spiritual aspects of «the sport of Hawaiian Kings,» as Kahanamoku tried in his lifetime, that has driven M&M Surfing School’s founder, Michael Pless Sr. as well as his son, Michael Pless Jr. (now you know why it’s called «M&M Surfing School»), since 1995, when they began teaching and mentoring their surf school students. Whether you take one lesson, a series or join a camp, M&M Surfing School remains true, as it has for decades, to its motto that «everyone catches a wave and everyone learns how to ride it.»

This school was recommended to me by my local wetsuit maker and I couldn’t have been any happier with the school. I took my two daughters and my niece and all three said they wanted to stay for another month. I was very pleasantly surprised at the diversity of the people taking lessons. From very little all the way up to 60+ years old. I was fortunate enough to get to watch a few days and I’m not sure who was more stoked, the lil ones or the older ones? All of them got out of the water with huge smiles on their faces. Needless to say the kids will be back for another summer sesh next year. After this camp they definitely got the stoke and have kept on surfing. This was the greatest gift I can give myself and the kids. Now we all get to surf together as a family. Thank you M&M and thank you to your awesome photographer who took so many great pics.

Michael and Mike started teaching me to surf about 6 or 7 years ago. They have become more than instructors or mentors, but loving friends.
The school comes with a whole compliment of friends, acquaintances, frenemies, and such. All of us share a camaraderie, and have an unspoken commitment to keep the beach and the surf collegial. If anyone gets agro, we kindly, gently, politely point out that there are lots of waves for all to share. M&M Surf has modeled that as long as I’ve been around. It’s why I still come here to surf as my first pick.
I still receive advice on my form pro bono from the instructors, even though I’m considered a «graduate».
If you want to have good fun, good people, and good surf lessons, definitely come to see M&M.

On my journey of finding to do something new and fun on a weekend, I have gained a passion for surfing. I would highly recommend M & M Surfing School for any age group. The professional instructors have an encouraging and fun way of explaining what to do on your first try. My instructor was very attentive, engaging, and personable; he truly did know how to help me overcome my fears. The younger kids who were in the same surfing group learned how to stand on the boards during their first try and seemed to have a blast. M & M Surfing School is a family-​owned business and they provide the best SURFice for the entire family I am definitely going to bring my thirteen-​year-​old daughter for her first time surfing to M & M Surfing School!

M&M Surf School is amazing! Both father and son were so friendly and welcoming. I got on the board on my second try and I am almost 40. My godson (14 years old) is here from New Mexico and he really enjoyed the experience. The price is great! The location is great and best of all the instructors are great! Best of all they give you a hug when you leave. That in itself tells you the type of people they are.

AWSOME!!! Michael and Michael are the best in the Surfing School world. Dear Michael and Michael,
My family rented a few boogie boards (and a rash guard) from you yesterday and I just wanted to say thanks for helping us have a most awesome day at Seal Beach! You guys both really helped to make a last minute plan come together perfectly.
Both of the kids and us as well had so much fun playing in the waves there. It was the highlight of my SoCal vacation. My oldest daughter said that she wished we had spent less time at Disneyland and more time surfing at Seal Beach! I wish we had been more organized and had time for a proper surfing lesson for her.
All that good fun and goodwill for a $ 30 rental fee was very good value I would say. Next time we get down that way we will definitely look you up for some proper surfing lessons.

From hardly any ocean exposure, to catching her own waves, and that was my 9 year old. So much more than surfing lessons– Michael and Johnny built confidence in and individually taught 3 very different kids. Helping with fear, timidity, size, strength, and flexibility difference; they allowed time for the kids to get comfortable, along with daily doses of entertainment. Hubby and I joined the lessons as well. We felt pretty fortunate to be a part of such a pillar in the community, quite obvious by the amazing people from all over the world that we met– who return to surf with M&M whenever they are in SoCal, and the seal beach residents that still join in regularly.

Mike, Mike (Jr and Sr), and their entire crew are awesome awesome awesome people and my kids have a blast every time. My 9 year old has fallen in love with surfing and just 5 days of surf lessons at M&M and he is now asking for a surfboard and wetsuit for Christmas. My 6 year-​old had a ton of fun too!
I take my water polo team on training trips from San Jose to Southern CA and we are always sure to take a day at Seal Beach, the team loves this part of the trip. Everyone catches waves and everyone has a blast.
Once you attend their lessons you feel like you are family!

This camp was recommended to us by a few Seal Beach locals who swore it was the best kept secret in SoCal… and they were right!
I had my daughter signed up for all kinds of camps: Girl Scout, computer camp, city camp, and for her last week of summer, M & M Surf Camp. I have to say, out of all the camps, this was by far the most fun she has had all summer. This is an entirely different kind of camp experience. No militant or rigorous schedule. It’s pretty laid back and relaxed, just like the surfers who run it. There is no pressure, everything is geared towards everyone having fun, but learning at their own pace. And if you feel like relaxing for a bit and playing in the sand, you can do that too!
My daughter isn’t super athletic, so I had my concerns. Boy was I surprised to see her up on her board and feeling more confident than I had seen her in a while. We are definitely making this an annual event.
Have to give a shoutout to the professional photographer who took many pictures of her. What a wonderful bonus to the camp! I didn’t expect such cool pics to show the jealous family in Texas. :D

I don’t know how many times I had looked at their surf school truck in the parking lot. Every morning they are ready to teach. I had a lesson for my birthday (year undisclosed). I survived to write a review. It was about time. Instead of saying «someday». It was a thrill. Everything seemed to be happening so fast ! Swish and slow at the same time. My brain said yes my body said no, sometimes the other way around. I was surfing. Ok, I was on a huge board and surfing waves the size of the suds in my washing machine, but there I was. One right after the other! Don’t back down from that wave, look ahead not down. Pop up! Get up and go! The instruction is great and taught with heart and soul and a good vibe. I was stoked and I shall return, as representation that, it’s never too late and you are never too old ! Forget about it! M & M do an awesome job. Team work.

How is it possible M&M surf school has been around this long and doesn’t have any reviews on Unilocal?When E was a little grom (now he is a big grom), we were in the area so we got him into a class. We were just recently in the area and ran into Mike Sr at the beach and I realized I hadn’t left a review for him either, so here it is.
You can’t visit Seal Beach without coming across the M&M surf school, they are part of the DNA of the beach here. You can find their van in the North parking lot beside the Seal Beach pier nearly every day. First thing in the morning, they are handing out boards and wetsuits to eager students, young and old alike.
P has been surfing since she was young and we had heard about M&M through a friend. Mike Sr had a big impact on E, giving him a lot of good tips and encouragement. He kept everything light and fun, the way surfing should be.
They know everything about the beach there. Not just the surf and which breaks are best, but they know all the people too. If you are ever in the area and want to have the ultimate Southern California surf experience, try surf lessons with Mike Sr and Mike Jr in Seal Beach.
Who knows, you may get the surfing bug and find yourself surfing alongside them!

Mike at M&M and his staff were totally awesome. I signed up my daughter and my niece (who I didn’t think would ever catch a wave) for 3 hour lessons. To my amazement they are now surfers! It was a matter of minutes and they were up catching waves and riding them all the way into shore. This experience made our entire vacation at Seal Beach so unforgettable. Thanks to Mike we are planning our next years vacation so I can also learn to Surf. They made it so easy and were so nice.

Best surf school ever!!! Been with M & M since September 2012. They are the most wonderful group of people; patient, understanding, supportive and confidence boosting. If I could give 10 stars, I would! Big Mike, lil Mike, and ALL the staff were absolutely amazing! We came to Cali for the summer & enrolled my 6&8 yr old girls in the Saturday lesson, they loved it & had so much fun that they begged for the week long camp. They are no pressure guys, so you’ll have to ask for a sweat shirt, they are priced great & my girls will wear theirs with pride! We will be Back next year, putting all 3 of my girls in the camp, as well as myself! I honestly can’t say enough good things about M&M! I was happy to tip all 4 gals that worked with my girls, they absolutely deserved it!

I had the best experience with the entire group. I was in from Chicago and learning to surf was on my life leap list. Owner Michael was awesome. He still has incredible passion for what he does And it shows. I’m 27 and was afraid it would be all young children… totally was not. Even one of the students moms was in my group to learn. We had Johnny. He was fun and did a great job even with us giving him a hard time. I completely recommend the school for all ages. Next time I’m back that will be my first stop. After 3 days I’m was rocking it! (I can pretend to be pro right!!!)

Michael has taught my entire family the fine art of surfing. He starts his class by sizing you up so he can get you fitted in a wetsuit and the perfect size board. After that, you head to the sand where he covers his «commandments of safety» — which he takes very seriously. Next you’ll practice standing up then it’s out to the water. I was terrified of the ocean but he eased my nerves right away. He’s like a wave concierge. He waits for the perfect size wave for a beginner then he gives you a little push and you’re off. I was up on the first day and had the time of my life. This is a family business with Michael Sr., his lovely wife Jill, and his son Michael Jr. They know the ocean better than anyone I’ve ever met. Great with kids and adults. Try it!
