Open Ground Studios is a community art studio for entry and mid-career artists. We offer classes on a regular basis to introduce and deepen skills in the areas of printmaking, book arts and other art forms. The Mission of Open Ground Studios is to provide a dedicated, inspiring and sustainable visual arts workspace for a community of creative adults. A place where early to mid-career artists can work, gather, learn and teach in a well-equipped, safe, cooperative and supportive environment.
History
Established in 2013.
Established in 2013 by a group of area artists interested in creating options art spaces on the Monterey Peninsula. Denese Sanders Leonard is the Director of Open Ground Studios (DOG) and has the support of many founding members (FOGS), and believers (BOGS). She was awarded the first prize in the 2013 Monterey Regional Business Plan Competition. OGS was built by the community for the community. Our programs are designed for the sustainability and growth of emerging and established artists, life-long learners, and teens. We offer affordable access, education and professional development.
Meet the Business Owner

Business Owner
Denese Sanders is a visual artist with a Masters Degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has an extensive background in printmaking, from UW-Madison to Atelier 17 in Paris, to running a collective printmaking studio for ten years in Minneapolis, MN. Her work ranges from sculptural objects, artists books, drawings and prints. She teaches college level studio arts classes at the Monterey Peninsula College and California State University, Monterey Bay and is the founder and director of Open Ground Studios.
