Hunger Hour EE @ High 5 Pie

I love pie so this event was a win for me!
I tasted at least a bite of each of the offerings and I thought they were all amazing.
It’s hard to beat my mom’s pie crust but theirs came close.

Mmmm, pie.
I’d never come to High 5 before and as a neighborhoodie I’m a little embarrassed about that. But what better way to be introduced than at an EE with free pie, beer, wine, chats with the owner, baker, and manager, and a glimpse into their kitchen?
There were lots of pies to sample — savories included corned beef & cabbage and a yummy potato cheddar dill; sweets came in apple, cherry almond, lemon meringue, and a cobbler-​like marionberry bar pie. I tried most of them and was quite pleased with the flaky crust and the not overly sweet fillings, so yay Dani Cone! I think even better than the pie though was the hospitality and openness of Dani and her staff, and we even scored some coupons good for half off on a later purchase! Another 5 star event thanks to Katy & the crew at High 5.

What a great start to the week!
I came to the event after work, and liked being able to try both sweet and savory pies and have some quality chatting time with my fellow Unilocalers. The event was quieter, which was nice for a Monday night, and there was plenty of food and beer for the night. There was also some swag that I haven’t seen before — Unilocal cards and balls!
I liked how friendly the employees were at High 5, and how they joined in with the mingling and made sure to ask everyone what their favorite pie was and to let us know they’re planning on getting experimental with their flavors! I’ll have to come back, especially since Pi Day is tomorrow!

As if to accentuate the range of Unilocal events, Hunger Hour offered the charm of a subdued neighborhood gathering, in contrast against the backdrop of the recent lavish affair at Tulalip last week, but that’s not to say it wasn’t delightful. A straight-​ahead event: come taste pies – savory and sweet, enjoy a beverage, and rub elbows. Works for me!
I’m much more a savory guy than a sweets guy, so I particularly enjoyed the potato-​dill pie bites. Don’t get me wrong, though: I tried each of the sweet pies as well. The little lemon meringue pies were novel and tasty. And I’ll not turn away a Guinness if ever one is offered to me. This, together with a bit of socializing in a pleasant, cheery environment all came together for an event perfectly suited to start off the week on an otherwise gloomy Seattle day. Thanks Katy, and everyone who put this on!
Also – be sure to check out the murals in the bathrooms – or at least the bathroom closest to the counter (the only one I visited). The murals were done by CakeSpy (
) and feature a number of little scenes to take in and smile at.

Seriously low key and fabulous for that fact, High 5 Pie and Katy put on a great casual affair. So many delicious pies, beer and wine offered! I had heard middling reviews of this place, but I am happy to say that even with them not being warm these pies were excellent. Tasty flaky crusts, yummy fillings, and all made by an awesome staff who made sure our questions were asked and our tummies were filled! I appreciated the peek into the kitchen and the pie flavor suggestion round as well.
So excited to come back and use my coupon on either a jar pie or a spinach and feta hand pie. Yum yum.

Yum! Sweet and savory pies everything was excellent. It was nice to find out they make gluten free pies also!
It was great to meet the bakers and learn about all the flavors they had available.

Who wouldn’t like taking a tour of a pie shop? I mean, the smells, the tastes, the fact that you can suggest a new pie flavour — COME ON!
This was a win for me — as I’ve always wanted a peep into their kitchen and my wish was granted last nite! Super cute, light, bright, w/​a loft office to boot!
I also got to meet Dani, and she is LOVELY.

I have walked and driven by this place many times without going in and now I wish I hadn’t waited so long to do so! The pies and other creations that we sampled were very good and you can tell the staff puts a lot of care in crafting their products with fresh, quality ingredients.
The owner took the time to give us a history of the business and some other details about how they operate. Its always cool to get to know the people behind the scenes and how it all came about so this was a nice touch.
The amount of people at this event was perfect for the size of the place and was a great way to get to know our fellow Unilocal Elites without being constantly distracted by the awesomeness of some of the bigger events.
As always, Katy H knows just what to do and how to plan for each type of event that she puts together. I hope we get to experience more of these smaller scale gatherings as they make for a nice balance and variety.
