Rising Produce

My parents and I have been shopping here for 20 years, if not longer. It’s s really great place… really friendly family-​owned store with really good products at reasonable prices.
We still regularly shop here.

Since moving to the area last year, Rising Produce has been my go-​to for cheap fruits and vegetables. The proprietress is knowledgeable, sociable, and has some great ideas to share.
Things I Really Like:
The lady who often runs the cash register and storefront (owner? I’ve no idea her name, I should ask some time!) is really nice.
Large variety of cheap produce
Cheap extras like noodles, rice and beans, odds and ends.
Small and local-​feeling.
Things I Don’t Really Like:
You really have to dig through some of the bins to find a good piece of non-​bruised and non-​wilting produce.
Lam’s Seafood down the street is often cheaper for some produce – and fresher.
No real deli or bread selection to speak of.

I’m a big fan of Rising Produce. I stop in from time to time for veggies and fruit but it really should be a more regular stop for me.
The woman (owner?) is so nice. Their prices are very low and you can get great deals. They don’t have an exhaustive selection of product but they have much of what you would need, esp. for Asian recipes.
I just went yesterday and got a huge bag of stuff for $ 10. It would be easily double that at Safeway or QFC.
Some of their produce can look a little sad but I just don’t buy that stuff. It’s carted in from all over so don’t count on it being local if that is a priority for you.
If value is important to you, I highly recommend this spot.

I’ve been coming here for years. Cheap, good quality fruit and veggies, but don’t buy more than a couple of day’s worth of fruit at a time because it’s not going to last.
They take credit cards now, but it’s easier to just pay cash.

I’m still making my way through the local grocery stores in this area, but this little shop makes that difficult. The produce is super cheap and generally nice so I have a hard time going elsewhere when I need supplies. Right now they’ve got seasonally appropriate pea shoots and I can’t stop eating them! I got two bundles of pea shoots, some broccoli, some nice looking tomatoes on the vine, and two Chinese eggplants for under $ 6. Can’t beat it!

Except for tubers, you gotta eat this produce within 48 hours. It’s definitely cheap though. They also have big tubs of dry beans you can get in bulk. And the cashier lady is really nice, I can’t remember her name though.

This place was a chance discovery for me. I was in the International District on a Friday around 2pm having a girls day and we wanted fruit and veggies so we happened to see this place and stop in.
The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is because their selection was slim in the veggies department. That being said, it’s an authentic Asian market and you’ll find a vast variety of exotic foods (to Americans) and also ingredients and products to make Asian cuisine.
What made me love this place was the owner! She was working the cash wrap (only worker I saw in the place) and she was great. Friendly, accommodating voluntarily, informative, etc. For example, my friend saw a section of bags (about 3lbs worth each bag) of a fruit we’ve both never seen before. She started explaining what it is, how to eat it, etc. She then offered us to sample it before we buy and even offered to re-​bag one of the big bags and give us a smaller portion.
Furthermore, we saw they had rice noodles for Pad See Ew by the cash wrap and she informed us they were freshly made that day and they only carry them on Friday’s. My friend asked how long they last in the fridge, etc. The last took her time and explained what to do before you put it in the fridge and how if you skip this step the noodles will be useless, etc. She then offered her an extra bag so she can process the noodles the right way etc. I was very impressed by her.
Will definitely be back because of her. She was great, thank you!

Smaller than some of the other Asian groceries in the area, but also friendlier (the woman at the register saw the ingredients I was buying and offered some tips on making Vietnamese spring rolls). Plus they have a good selection of low price produce– fruits and vegetables are roughly half what they cost at QFC.

Excellent stop for produce if you are not looking for anything in particular. I usually stopped in to look for some cheap veggies. This place is usually a hit or miss. Good for Bok Choy and leafy Chinese veggies. Some of their seasonal fruits are yummy too like mangos and papaya if they are fresh. They only have a small selection of organic veggies but maybe some are organic and just not labeled. Like the Choy Sum I bought today wasn’t labeled organic but had some holes in the leaves. That tells me some bugs have been eating it so it must be organic! Lol! I don’t know! Its always good to ask what just came in to know whats fresh. Like other reviewers said, they do have produce that are really ripe and at the end of life, but really cheap if you plan to eat it right away. They also have a good selection of asian sauces, noodles, instant noodles, tofu, eggs, drinks… they have 100% Coconut water, $.79 for a 10.6oz can or $ 1.19 for a 16oz! They have everything that most asian markets have except any meats unless they are in a can like sardines. The cashier speaks English and didn’t hesitate to offer me suggestions on how to cook Ong Choy when I asked. I also like that it is a small store so I can find what I want without having to walk through a giant store. I’m so lazy. I usually spend around $ 5-​$ 10 here and walk out with lots of produce. Whereas if I were at Trader Joes or QFC it would be twice as much for slightly better quality.

This place is great! Maybe you can’t get everything on your grocery list, maybe some of it is on the cusp, but the prices are reflected in that. Tell me where else you can get two billowing bags full of produce for $ 20?
It’s not for everyone. If you are planning Eggplant Parmesan and need them to be super pretty, keep moving. But if you like to save some cash and still get quality produce, step on up. You’re in for a treat!

This place is great. Excellent prices for all kinds of produce and other asian items. Plus the cashier is always friendly. You know it’s a good deal when grandmas shop there.

Based on my last visit, I will sadly no longer be returning to Rising Produce.
I frequented this place several years ago and always found it to be well-​stocked with a variety of cheap fruits and veggies. The quality of the products were never *great*, but for the price, who cares? (It all goes in your stomach anyways and comes out… well, let’s not go THERE.)
This time, things were different. In a bin that was large enough to hold a family of five, I couldn’t find one eggplant that wasn’t on its way to ferment-​dom. The garlic, which was sold in packs, so you couldn’t tell how they really were — looked black even from the outside. I couldn’t find one single onion that wasn’t bruised and moldy. And this was a Friday afternoon, not the end of the week when there aren’t any deliveries.
Perhaps Rising Produce always had crappy produce, and I just didn’t notice, or maybe my standards have gotten higher. However, if I owned the business, I’d be embarrassed at having such crap displayed with a price tag next to it. Truly disappointed. Will not be back.

This is my «go-​to» place for cherries during cherry season…$ 1.99 per pound, geez, how can you beat that? The décor is not so hot, the presentation nonexistant, but the selection is almost as good as Viet Wah, the service is friendly and the prices are rock bottom. This place is a the real deal and you will see it filled with asians, ethiopians and latinos on a Sunday morning shopping for dinner. The owner/​cashier speaks about 10 different languages and can greet and help all the customers in a friendly, helpful way. If you don’t mind the bare bones décor, it’s worth a try.

Nice family-​owned store with plenty of fresh produce and grains. One stop shop, plenty of parking on a less busy street for easy access. Monkey gets a 50# sack of rice here. Will return to stock up on beans and fruit.

I love this place! I love the variety and quality of produce here — I discover something new every time I go! I totally agree that is is super affordable — three large bags full of food for less than $ 25 is awesome.

Broken rice for $ 3.99! Red beans in bulk for 1.29 $! Red Romas for 0.89! the most friendly cashier who appreciates that we bring our own bags! Yes the produce can be a little on the ripe side, but you can walk around the corner to Van’s produce where things are fresher, but busier. They only take cards for over $ 20. But if you are desperate, or close to $ 20 they let it slide. We go here for above named items and for the short haired checkout lady.

Excellent market for Asian produce, canned and pre-​packaged goods.
Cashiers are friendly and helpful, with no communication barriers.
Prices are very competitive, and I continue to be impressed by their selection. As an example, I started cooking Sichuan using Fuschia Dunlop’s book «Land of Plenty» and found most of the obscure ingredients not already in my well-​stocked Asian pantry.
I have asked staff about unfamiliar ingredients, and they usually can offer basic suggestions on how to use them. With a great selection and helpful staff, this place is far less hassle than Uwajimya downtown.

Tucked away in a older brick building who’s façade has noticeable cracks and resembles something that might not withstand the next stiff breeze is a total gem of a produce aisle and assorted other asian specialty food store with rock bottom prices. Add to that a STRONG preference for cash as a form of payment and you really have a very typical asian grocery store that chooses to do away with the frills and pass the savings along to the customer.
So if you’re in the area and looking for some cheap produce definitely stop on in. The folks are friendly, the stuff is fresh, and did I mention its cheap!
Seriously Rainer Cherries $ 1.99 /​lb… nuff said. Check them out and leave at least one bag of rainer cherries for me as I could only carry away so much in my last trip.

Like most non-​big aisle, non-​shinny light, not spic & span Asian markets, you have to pick through the bins to find the top quality. Good deals on produce are here by the plenty.

This isn’t a Uwaji’s. It is kind of grubby and the produce is really ripe. You will have to pick through it, but there are some bargains. Some of the stuff is really good and all of it is pretty inexpensive.
Still, you can get some of the more exotic stuff pretty cheaply. You just have to spend some time picking through the produce.
