I believe art is the way we communicate with ourselves, with those around us, and with the world.
Art can have many expressions through many mediums.
My art comes from my study of Zen Buddhism and the martial art, Aikido. In Zen, there is a wonderful austerity and beauty. We see that in the rock garden at Ryoanji Temple in Kyoto, Japan. Aikido comes from the lush Shinto garden that is filled with vibrancy and aliveness. I think of Aikido as the bamboo forests in «Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.»
When I pick up my brush, I am dealing with only ink and paper. The blank sheet of paper is where I step into these worlds.
As soon as I began moving my brush, I am both artist and observer. I am also having fun because something is happening that fully engages me, the artist, and me the observer.
There is a fine balance between these two forces.
