Wheaton Park Stables

The stable organized an hour-​long ride for a group of cub scouts. Setting up the ride was easy, and the staff were very professional both when setting up the appointment and during the ride itself. The scouts had a great time.

They are having a ringworm outbreak. Avoid as it is a highly contagious fungal infection that easily transmits between animals and people.

i was one of those little girls who LOVED horses. i collected my little ponies, read those saddle club books, had folders with the lisa frank unicorns on them, and naturally, i begged, pleaded, and pouted until i was allowed to take horseback riding lessons.
despite their slightly cheesy, 70s-​looking website, wheaton park stables is a great place to take lessons. the sprawling, emerald grounds stretch on for acres, bordered by white picket fences and they’re just across the street from wheaton regional park, so classes get a sporadic trail ride treat. i think about half the horses at the time i was there were boarded, but they also have a lot of teaching horses, which is fantastic. the main thing i remember was stressing about arriving early enough to get first pick of my horse. early birds got nice horses, like bandit or cricket. latecomers got stuck with the ill-​tempered, slow, strong-​willed, or easily spooked horses. my least favorite? bonnie. what a hooker. she never listened and refused to go faster than 2 miles per hour.
i suppose the most important thing is, they taught me well. i took lessons every weekend in elementary and middle school, but quit when field hockey kilts seemed way cooler than smelly riding pants. then in college, i dusted off my riding helmet and gave polo a try (hey, i figured i was combining the two sports). well, it lasted exactly one lesson due to the early practices, but, my riding skills? still on point.
