History

Established in 2007.

In 2007, Monks became the first craft beer bar in South Dakota providing both classic beers from around the world, and American craft beers from some of the finest breweries. The location quickly expanded to include a deck, patio, and expanded seating area. More changes came about in 2013 with the addition of Gandy Dancer Brew Works, which increased the beer selection and more than doubled the seating capacity. Gandy Dancer was the first and only nano-brewery and brew pub in Sioux Falls. Gandy Dancer brews started as a collaboration between the brew master, Perry Volden, and several home brewers. Because of this collaboration, one of these home brewers gained the confidence to start his own brewery! John Berkness is now the brew master and has created some signature beers of his own, as well as many amazing specialty beers.

Meet the Business Owner

Jerry H.

Business Owner

In 2003, Jerry Hauck leased the building for his custom furniture business, Western Plains Design Studio. Shortly thereafter, Hauck established Craftsman Creek Gallery as a showcase for his furniture and the work of dozens of local and regional artists, as well as studio space for several artists.

In 2007, Craftsman Creek Gallery succumbed to the pressures of a dwindling arts market and closed its doors, thus enabling the emergence of the region’s first craft beer establishment. .. Monks House of Ale Repute.

Hauck pursued his vision of «better beer» for Sioux Falls, and over the next several years expanded Monks to include a large patio, a private party room, a second pub, and a brewery. .. introducing Gandy Dancer Brew Works in 2013.

Gandy Dancer brews beers with a local touch, and brew master John Berkness creates his own lineup of signature and specialty beers as well.
