Holiday Inn Express & Suites Solana Beach-Del Mar

Room was updated ok. But the bathroom did not even have towel rods. Every step the guests above us made I heard. Lots of noise from the ceiling above. No stairs to use at the far end of the floor where I was. Have stayed in MUCH nicer Holiday Inn Expresses before. Kind of expensive for the lack of quality. Usual good breakfast for a Holiday Inn Express.

For the price — $ 200+ a night — I wasn’t impressed with the rooms or hotel. The location to the racetrack was great though.

My friend booked this hotel because we couldn’t get into the one we preferred. Hotel was a dated/​updated room. Breakfast was nice however the layout of hotel is a little odd. My friend left her new sandals behind & didn’t realize till we got home. When she called the desk employee, after asking housekeeping, he told her there were no sandals found. humm makes me wonder how honest this hotel really is because she did leave the sandals…

Great Place to stay! Friendly Front Desk Service. Clean, Quiet Room! Comfortable Beds. Great Breakfast everything you could want. Will definitely stay here again soon.

The Staff was friendly, the hotel was clean and the parking was free :) Close to the Del Mar fair, restaurants and the Beach!

Nice Hotel, definitely better than I expected.
The Receptionist is very nice and helpful, the rooms are fairly priced and clean.

For a Holiday Inn, this one was pretty nice. Good breakfast in the mornings. 5 minute walk to the beach. The service was great. The Australian front desk guy was amazing and very helpful. They provided extra towels for my wife and I to take to the beach and a late checkout. Couldn’t ask for more for a beach hotel.

Best thing about this place is location! So close to the beach, literally just across the street, and a very quick walk north. Does not take more than just a couple minutes! You can work out on the access stairs and run along the gorgeous beach. Convenient parking in large parking garage. Rooms are clean, and for the price, a deal. Continental breakfast is typical, nothing special, besides that it’s free. Two stars off for these two reasons, tiny pool and jacuzzi, fitness room is only suitable for two people, and anyone trading this, please don’t bring your kids to a fitness room, it really sucks for those of us that have to put up with them climbing on equipment, seriously, what if they fall or get hurt, hotels should not allow kids in fitness centers. Plus they are a total distraction. One last thing, I did have to move rooms because of a plumbing issue, but the did offer to send someone to my room to move me. They also supplied wine glasses and a bottle opener. That was nice.

Got taxed n added charges to bill signed bill for room at 108. No curtains, extremely bright room at sunrise. Besides that staff was nice n so was room

Very friendly staff; clean rooms, lobby, and grounds. The rooms are supplied with flat screen TV, microwave, fridge, desk, Free Wi-​Fi, etc. The beach is across the street behind the hotel. Plenty of places to eat within walking distance. Continental breakfast is nothing special.

Being a chain hotel you pretty much expect the same thing when you go to a Holiday Inn Express. And this one being located near the beach hikes it prices up more than what you generally pay for a hotel of this nature. I was not impressed. The outside appearance looks cheap with all the different colored lights. The lobby and main areas are not well maintained and have the appearance they were painted by a crew of high school students doing a volunteer job. And the bathroom doors are very heavy and will not stay open, almost slamming on you constantly. The only clientele I saw were single men, which seemed weird in a tourist town near the beach. Think I’ll skip this one next time.

Booked two nights on ⁴⁄₂₆. Check in was a little hairy. Check in should have been 3PM, but the room wasn’t ready until about 4:30. I’m not complaining too much because they gave us a late check out, an extra 2 hours. Perhaps they did that for the party ahead of us and that is why we checked in so late. So I guess it’s a draw. :)
The room was bigger and cleaner than I imagined from previous reviews. The bathroom was clean and looked new. There was a small balcony, the sleeping area with a king bed and an armoire where the TV, microwave, and refrigerator was. Towards the entrance of the room there was a small sitting area with a couch and desk, and the bathroom and a small sink.
We booked online, for about $ 115 per night, and for that price, it was just right. My only complaint would be the bedding. The fitted sheet could not accommodate the mattress, so all weekend, the sheet was coming off the bed and we woke up sleeping on bare mattress no matter how many times we tried to adjust it during the night. Small downer, NBD, but irritating.
The breakfast is… well, don’t expect too much. There were some hard biscuits and gravy, sausage patties, sticky rolls, a weird egg/​cheese omelet thing that was very dry and hard… cereal, yogurt, etc. The best thing from the breakfast was the sausage patty, bc it was edible.
It is a short five minute walk to the beach… it is a cliff-​side beach, so you have to walk a ton of stairs to reach the sand but it was good exercise. Quiet secluded beach. It was lovely.

Stayed overnight Saturday to attend the Fred Hall Fishing, Hunting, and Boat show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The hotel is 5 mins away from the fairgrounds which was nice. Check in was by a friendly staff person. The room was clean and quiet.
We usually stay at the Oceanside Holiday Inn which has a restaurant.
Parking is free and close to many restaurants. Flatscreen TV and fridge and coffee maker in room.

stayed here for a convention being held at the fairgrounds. although this place is close to the bars and restaurants, it’s still not walking distance. so if you have to drive to a bar/​restaurant down the street, you’d have to find parking which could be a hassle on a busy weekend.
the rooms are descent and clean. it’s been updated since the last time i was here a couple years back. i do like that each room has a fridge. the worst part about the hotel is the breakfast. possibly the worst «continental» breakfast i’ve ever had. the eggs tasted like rubber every morning. i think i even got sick from the food on the last day we were there. yes, i could have skipped the breakfast but it was offered and it should still at least be up to average standards. and rubber is not average standard.

This hotel was horrible… I got reserved a king bed with a pull out couch… when I got there I did not get a pull out couch but it was ok because I quickly checked out. It says recently renovated… I would not say a completely stained 1970’s bathtub that would not come clean is renovated… The «balcony» is totally small with a slider that is hard to open, dirty with chipped paint on the air conditioning unit that takes up ½ of the tiny balcony… There were no chairs on the balcony. When I asked the front desk about the newly renovated hotel they pointed out the lobby is nice… Really… Who sleeps and showers in the lobby!!! Thank goodness Expedia felt my pain and let me check out and get a new room down the road… Beware!!! If a hotel that will guarantee you getting athlete’s foot this is the hotel for you!!! Not what I expected at all…

The hotel gets 3 stars, the parking gets 1 star, and the San Diego Sheriff who responded after my car got broken into during the night gets 5 stars. To the scum who stole my first aid kit: I hope you need it one day, especially the tourniquet. Believe the reviews that say that the parking is unsafe.

We dig a Holiday Inn Express. They give you cookies at check in. Who don’t love a cookie at check in? This one was non-​cookie cutter, you wouldn’t find this layout in say. Phoenix. It was designed to maximize the space in Solana Beach, overground 1^st floor parking, pool on the 2^nd floor, balconies. Block to the beach is key, a few blocks to the Belly Up.
Minus a star or so because our TV broke late and we had to move rooms.
I overslept breakfast, but they do have cheeseburgers and frozen burritos in the vending machines! What a concept!
$ 105 with AAA not too bad.

Mildly worn but a block from the beach. Great location.
Odd layout to the property: quirky but works. Must have been a «property conversion» of some sort.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for work when I went to San Diego for training. Although I did not stay long (2 nights), I had a chance to explore the area which was quite nice. This hotel allows you to walk wherever you want to go, so no need to deal with parking. There is a california pizza kitchen 1 block from the hotel, and the designer district is also a nice place to walk to. Lots of interesting and unique furniture and art.
My room had a small balcony which overlooked… a parking lot. Well at least it let in a nice cool breeze at night. The bathroom smelled slightly like an elderly person, but I guess that’s just a hotel stink? The microwave and fridge were awesome in the room when I went out to eat and brought back the leftovers for later.
The hotel is one block from the beach, but unfortunately I didn’t have time to go… even though i did have high hopes when packing my bathing suit and flip flops. The weather during my stay was «under the weather» (haha bad joke), so I wasn’t too upset about not being able to beach bum around.
The only reason for my 4 star review is because of the price. I stayed mid week tu-​th and the price was outrageous. There was a horse race going on those days, so that may be the reason. Thank god for company expense accounts, cause i would have never paid for this hotel at that price.

After spending four of the last six weeks in this hotel I feel qualified to write a review.
The hotel is in a great location and the price is right. The rooms are your basic hotel rooms, clean and neat. There is a microwave and small fridge in the room so you can get a six-​pack of Coca-​Cola (or your favorite beverage) and some microwave popcorn and enjoy the evening in your room. Unfortunately, the televisions are regular old TV’s, no Hi-​Def or flatscreen here and the service is basic cable with HBO. Considering that this is a hotel in a resort area, it would be nice to replace a few of the home shopping networks with the Golf Channel, TCM, TLC or some better channels (really do I need three shopping channels and three Spanish-​language networks?)
Breakfast is included but the schedule seems to remain pretty constant and is a little weak. Scrambled eggs and bacon on Mon-​Wed and cheese omelettes and sausage Thur — Fri. Cereal, hard-​boiled eggs, toast and bagels are also available. My co-​workers seemed to enjoy the coffee as well. Also, there is a big TV in the breakfast room that is usually tuned to CNBC or CNN in the morning.
One big drawback, the fitness «room» looks bigger on the internet but is actually tiny and consists of a treadmill, elliptical trainer and stationary bike. Very disappointing.
The staff is friendly and gives good suggestions for the surrounding area although they are clearly partnering with the italian restaurant next door and push you to go there. However, I had already heard that that restaurant was not worth the time, so I made my own decisions about where to go.
Overall, this is a decent, but not great hotel.
