Five Horses Tavern

I’m obsessed with this place! I am attempting to try every gluten free thing on the menu. So far, I have loved everything. My favorite part is the outside seating during the warmer months. The drinks are delicious and the dessert! The hummus is by far the best I’ve ever had… I always order it for take-​out because I can’t get enough.

Solid 4/4.5 stars. This place was really, really good. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is my wife didn’t love her omelette, but I had one of each taco, tuna, pork, and carrot! And all three exceeded my expectations. Even the carrot taco, lol. The drinks I ordered were excellent, the food was excellent, the atmosphere was excellent. Go for it

We went to Five Horses on a Saturday night and expected it to be packed with slow service. We were half right. Every table seemed to be taken, but there was no line to wait. We got a table quickly and the waiter was on top of the service the entire time. He was quick to take orders, refill drinks and check in without being over the top. We were in a bit of a hurry, so I asked for the check early, and he took care of it right away. The service couldn’t have been much better.
They have a great beer selection of micro brews and bigger names. The cornbread was very good, but I would have like it to be a bit bigger. Ok for two people to get you started. We both got the meatloaf sandwich and were very happy with it.
Good atmosphere. Lively, but not too loud. Mixed crowd from families with toddlers, young adults, and older folks.

We stopped in yesterday 1÷23÷16. I ordered the chicken and dumping soup $ 17.00, steak dinner $ 20.00, and mac n cheese with crabmeat $ 20.00. The food was nasty and not worth the money at all. I also asked for a cup of coffee and waited 20 mins i was not given any cream or sugar. It was not busy. The service was absolutely appalling. I will never go back. Buyers beware but that’s my opinion.

The food at Five Horses Tavern is good but the service there is what sets it apart from other places in the Davis Square area. We went with a group reservation of 13 last night; food was served fast (but not too fast) and the water and the beer were refilled often. The staff was friendly and knew their beer selections.
Customer service is clearly in the culture of the restaurant across all levels. As I was heading out the door this morning, I couldn’t find my wallet and hoped there was a chance I somehow left it at Five Horses last night. Steve, the manager on duty last night, answered my call this morning. He mentioned that he hadn’t seen a wallet turned in but he would do a thorough search in the area where we all sat last night. A half hour later, I got a call back that he found my wallet under the bench to my huge relief.
I’ll say it again, great service across all levels, and I’ll continue to come back.

The cornbread was AMAZING.
The duck burrito was delicious.
Avoid the strange dumpling soup. It was basically an absurd interpretation of matzoh ball soup.

The food here was absolutely delicious and the bartender was extremely friendly for a lunch rush bartender. It’s a little out of the way but I will return!!!

I really hate updating this review, but I can’t not say it: your food is good and has vegetarian options that aren’t just greasy vegetables slopped on a plate, your beer list is phenomenal, and your servers are always knowledgeable and friendly, but the speed of your service sucks. I want to love you as much as I used to, but the past 4 – 5 times I’ve been here, it’s been so, so slow. The servers are always apologetic, but it seems like they’re genuinely confused rather than forgetful.
Please fix it. I don’t know if you’re understaffed, or someone’s getting cut and no one realised they needed to pick up the table, or the way tables are assigned doesn’t make sense, the order things come out in is tricky, or something else entirely, but something isn’t right, and it’s not just one server having a bad day.

If I could give negative stars, I would. I grew up in Somerville, MA and have since lived in various major cities around the world. I’ve watched Somerville morph before my eyes on trips home; from a hidden gem outside of Boston to a hip and trendy destination for urban hipsters. I’ve watched some truly great places open that have brought vibrancy and interest to the city. I have also seen over-​rated, over-​priced and utterly disappointing restaurants pop up all over the neighborhoods my childhood friends and I grew up in; Five Horses is undoubtedly one of the latter.
I visited Five Horses with my husband and my mom (who is a lifetime resident of Somerville and still lives in Davis Sq.) during a trip home from NYC to visit family. We popped in and sat at the bar for a drink and a quick bite.
The bartender was rude, opinionated and derogatory. He asked where we were visiting from and when I mentioned I actually grew up in Somerville he commented that I must have lived there when it was «a battle zone.» He had several other negative comments about Somerville that he spit out before finally asking us what we wanted to drink.
Besides the rude comments and obvious snobbiness, the food was sub-​par and my cocktail was a horrendous concoction of liquor and juices — a clearly inexperienced bar staff. We ordered appetizers, all of which tasted like they came from the kitchen at a 99 chain — frozen and re-​heated, and overpriced. Whoever the chef is here should be ashamed.
I would never return here and I know my Mom has been telling everyone the same.
Besides the terrible, overpriced food and drinks, the staff is snobby and simply rude. The owner would do well to put employees in check and remind them that being obnoxious to locals can literally kill a restaurant.
I consider our money spent at this restaurant to have been flushed down the drain, and more importantly the time here utterly misspent. You couldn’t pay me to go back to Five Horses.

Great food! Service varies but usually pretty good. It’s pretty busy on the weekends. Good beer and wine selections! I had the carne asada tacos and they were good but the filling to tortilla ratio was a bit off.

We stopped in at 5 Horses on our way to a play last night and to say the least it was a very disappointing experience.
We were sat in some comfortable chairs and the interior hinted at a pleasant dining experience, but as the old saying goes «you can’t polish a turd.»
Our sever was friendly but the food was awful. We ordered:
— French Kiss Pizza
–Mac n Cheese
–Cheese soup
–Fried chicken app
–Polenta fries
–Corn bread
The flavor was either bland and tasteless or actually really gross. My partner described the French Kiss pizza as tasting like dirt and my mac n cheese had literally no taste and a very paste — like texture. The only positive food experience we had was the corn bread but it was the huge amount of honey butter on top that saved it.
It was also extremely noisy by the time we left which made the last 20 minutes or so unbearable. There were screaming children and shouting adults, which makes you question why you get IDed at the door.
And to top it all off I paid $ 135 (tip included) to get a tasteless meal and got my partner, my friends and I sick! (He is literally in the washroom as we speak)
Don’t waste the time or money and go elsewhere.

What a pleasant surprise! I was expecting tradition American bar type food… which it is, but the quality on this trip was excellent!
Drinks: I had the «Neigh Neigh» which is made with pisco. Delicious mix with bell pepper purée.
And the «Cool Notion” — more of a standard drink with deep eddy ruby red vodka. Both great.
Food: a friend and I split the burger and the Mac n cheese. The Mac n cheese: Mind. Blown. So so good. Especially when you dip the tater tots from the burger into the cheese sauce. #lovemycarbs
The burger was a standard burger, but it was cooked perfectly and was juicy and fresh.
Minus a star for service. We sat at the bar. It wasn’t terrible, just not attentive. We were handed the menus while she was talking with someone else and we weren’t greeted until she asked what we wanted for drinks.
Overall a great place to stop in Davis.

Fun spot for dinner and drinks.
The Tavern is surprisingly huge inside, making it perfect for large groups of friends or just a casual dinner date. It seems to get busy, so make sure to plan ahead for peak hours. The food menu has tons of stuff including typical American bar food, but also pizza and tacos. The drinks menu is even bigger, so you are sure to find something to suit your tastes.
From my visits here my verdict is that the food is not bad, though some items seem much better than others. Service has been inconsistent. In my last visit, our group never put in a second round of drinks because our server seemingly vanished.
Onto the dishes. The loaded tater tots were spicy and very tasty. I also recommend the fried chicken tenders. Juicy, crispy, well-​seasoned and accompanied with two tasty dipping sauces. The tacos while not too bad, felt somewhat small and skimpy compared to other dishes. I tried the Tuna was not memorable and I can’t even remember the second one I ordered. The meatloaf sandwich was not bad. It was filling and I appreciated that it came with a ton of salad. While I love caramelized onions and melted cheese the meatloaf itself did not come through quite enough for me. I also tried the veggie pizza and it was just alright. It had a good amount of toppings, but I did not find the sauce remarkable and the veggies were not transformed enough in the oven. As a positive surprise, the tofu ricotta certainly had its intended effect. The food here is not cheap, but apart from the tacos, the portions seem pretty generous.
I look forward to coming back to try more dishes.

Very painfully mediocre food that tries too hard to be different all the while delivering a bland experience. The restaurant also overcharged us but didn’t want to wait 10 minutes to flag down our server.
Five Horses Tavern was underwhelming and error-​prone, and we’ll always feel cheated (out of both money and flavor).

I love this place. Perfect for any occasion. I’ve gone here with my girlfriends, I’ve gone here on a date, I’ve gone here for work, and I’ve gone here for drinks. It’s classy yet casual and not usually too crowded. Their menu is large and delicious with a decent size drink menu. My go-​to for food is the max and cheese because it’s super creamy and they give you just the right amount so you’re full but not dying. Their tuna tacos are also a favorite and you can order a single taco if you want to get a few different kinds. If you’re trying to find somewhere to go in Davis, Five Horses is definitely a safe bet.

I don’t nearly come here as often as I used to. It’s actually been about a year or two since I’ve last visited. Well, the tacos got me sick, so that might have something to do with it. I’ll spare you the details.
We went to meet up with friends over the weekend and you could say it was a bit congested. Perhaps they were understaffed? It took 21 minutes to get a beer, and when I finally did, I saw that the bartender’s thumb went inside my drink. This might seem like nothing to most people, but I’m on the cusp of a germaphobe. He didn’t pour it out, as I would have when I was a bartender. It’s kinda gnarly. All of the dirty glasses one touches, wet rags, etc and then my beer got thumb-​blasted.
Boourns.

This hip hipster haven is doing a lot of things right in the neighborhood. Despite my personal annoyance with the scene, my steak was done right, the potatoes were good and the tacos were delicious. A few comments and quirks:
1) we ordered the potato appetizer as I didn’t look closely at the sides and missed that my steak came with these, too. This was not pointed out to us by the server.
2) order cocktails or beer here. So very few people are ordering wine I can’t imagine that it can be a good choice. This isn’t much of an issue because the food is distinctly beer food anyways. Just a note.
3) KFC style chicken for $ 12? Sigh. But it looked ridiculous and I totally regret not getting it after people at tables on either side of me did.

I always pass by as I drive through Davis Square and stopped in with my cousin for dinner. We had nice seats outside because the high top tables by the windows inside were all occupied.
The meal started off with a pitcher of sangria which neither of us enjoyed too much because it tasted as if it was made with a non sweet red wine, so the drink was somewhat flavorless.
After about half way through we noticed that the inside of the pitcher appeared to be dirty, but just to make sure it wasn’t pulp I stuck my finger inside and sure enough, it was a hard substance that I was able to scrape off with my fingernail. Gross.
What we ordered:
Baja fish tacos: Very tasty, even better with sriracha sauce.
Papas Fritas: A handful of thick cut potato wedges served with a delicious spicy mayo. The mayo was amazing.
Crab mac ‘n’ cheese: very tasty, and creamy with lots of crab. So good.
Tater tots: Good when dipped in spicy mayo.
Our waiter was a cool guy and the service was pleasant. I’m glad I checked this place out because I’ve had it booked for months. Next time I will be back for brunch and I’ll make sure to skip the sangria.

We went here on a Saturday before heading in to town for a show.
We arrived around 5:30, which gave us 90 minutes for a beer and a bite before we had to leave. What made me sad is that we needed every minute of that. The food was quite slow, even though it was early in the evening, and the place was only half full (if that).
Once we got the food, it was quite good. Everyone loved their meals (even the side salad that came with mine).
The beer though. There was a really big (although close to overwhelming) beer list, but it was really good. And when I was clearly fumbling to find the right IPA, the waiter knew off the top of his head all the ones they had on tap, as well as which were his faves. The sign of a man who loves his beer for sure!

Davis square has exploded with awesome over the past couple years and five horse tavern appears to be a fast staple in the area.
We came here for brunch. The beer list is massive so you’ll be sure to find something you like.
We opted for salty brunch. Huevos Rancheros and chimichanga. My chimichanga was a big burrito. It came with sour cream and guacamole. I didn’t like the chunks of potato but otherwise the filling was very good.
My partner devoured the huevos rancheros. He asked for sausage, and they accommodated without issue. He also had the vodka Bloody Mary. Seriously delicious.
Service is friendly. Ambience is chill chic. I definitely recommend and would enjoy coming back anytime.
