Oddly, the plates are expensive but the sides are ridiculously cheap. Although the Kalua Pork Plate was good, one day I just happened to feel like only having Kimchee and Macaroni Salad for lunch. I was pretty surprised to discover they are only $ 1 each!

Island spirit. Legendary: Which extends to the staff of this Hawaiian-themed truck. Quick with a smile. Warm and personable. High in spirits. Food however fell a bit short. Huli Huli chicken wasn’t sweet enough for a brown sugar based dish. Preferred the ginger-based Shoyu chicken. Even then it was subtle. Balance of white and dark meat skewed too heavily on the latter. Person taking my order had to ask the other person how each chicken was made. Should know these things. Portions were generous($ 11 combo plate was enough food for two meals) and service overall was great. Both elements secure the third star. If only the food matched the spirit.

I recently got to try the Hawaiian lunch plates from this new food truck. On the menu: Luau plate(choice of 2 meats) — $ 11 Shoyu chicken plate — $ 10 Huli Huli chicken plate — $ 10 Kalua pork plate — $ 10 Kalua pork nachos — $ 8 Portuguese sausage plate — $ 10 drinks $ 1-$ 2 Menu prices were one dollar higher(the Kalua plate was $ 2 cheaper before) than when I first saw them at the SoMa StrEat Park in March-April. After just a few months in business and they need to raise prices already? The food was only okay. I had the Kalua pork. Each plate comes with a bit of green salad and kimchee, and only one scoop of rice. This truck serves a lighter and healthier version of semi-Hawaiian food. In Hawaii, everyone knows that a lunch plate comes with 2 scoops of rice(half priced mini plates have 1 scoop). So this plate has less carbs. And also less fat, because it’s missing the typical macaroni salad. Not exactly a good value from my point of view. Overall, the food portion is decent(Yes, Hawaiians eat a lot more carbs than SF) and the taste is okay. But u can get rice plates all over the city for less than ten bucks. Also, SF has several Hawaiian shops already, and last year a few more opened around the city(Grindz, Pa’ina, etc.). So for me this truck is not unique enough. I’ll buy their lunch plate, if this was the only food truck available. But I wouldn’t seek them, if I had other choices. And I prefer the food from L&L Hawaiian, better taste, bigger portion and cheaper too.

The food was ok not all that special. There wasn’t much in the box. I had the luau with huli huli chicken. There was prob 2 bites of Kalua pork and 2 bites of chicken. I only went here because the other lines were long. I don’t think I would come back. Have had better Hawaiian.
