Found this place online, good selection, staff was courteous and kind. I bought a used camper shell from them. I was actually set to buy a different one, but they were able to find one that matched the color of my truck. They did a good job installing it. I almost didn’t go to this place because of the negative reviews, but i honestly don’t know what everyone is complaining about. I’ll definitely go back to this place in the future.

The customer service is Grade D. They don’t keep customer posted on order status. I recently came to the shop in Feburary becuase my tunnel cover for my truck, the clear coat was peeling off. I believe Adam said no problem should be under warranty, so I was excited about that I was told would take 4 weeks. I had no problem with waiting long as it come back clean, but long and be hold long stort short I didn’t get my tunnel cover back till middle of May… Live n Learn.

I got a used camper shell for my 2002 Toyota Tacoma there this week. I called on Thursday and placed a hold on it with Alfonso and checked it out the next day. They have a main lot with some newer shells on racks, but the older shells are stacked on top of each other with 2×4’s, especially at their satellite lot a few blocks down. That being said, my shell was still in pretty good condition (although I can see what other people on here are saying about the older shells being worn down just by the storing conditions).
I ask them to put carpeting/​headliner, a pet screen, and also decided to put in a bedrug after seeing it in their office. Alfonso told me that the bedrug wouldn’t get there till Monday, so I decide to just get the shell installed with the newly included carpeting and pet screen. When I got home, I did notice a very small section where the fiberglass was exposed inside the shell and some of the excess foam lining wasn’t properly trimmed. Since I was going back there on Monday I figure I would address these problems to Alfonso and he had his installers fix it! The installer also replaced the insulation lining for the back window even when there were only small sections that needed it. That’s great customer service!
If you do buy here, all I can advise is that you check the shell before you buy. You might also have to give the side windows a good cleaning due to the way they store them. I would definitely recommend them to a friend who’s looking for a used shell!

I purchased a used camper shell for my pick up truck. This place is sort of a dark hole in the wall. It’s dirty and un organized, The staff is mediocre. The install of my top was OK, besides the fact that they scratched the door of my brand new truck. And all they did was shrug their shoulders and say whoops I’m sorry.

I got my truck topper there this week. Alfonso help me with my purchase and he said that my topper will be there before Christmas. He called my on the 23^rd of December. I told him I will be there on Christmas eve. I got there before 9:00 AM and I was out before 10:00 A.M. I
The place is small and clutter but you can get a good deal here. Less overhead low prices.

I got 3 different quotes from Snugtop dealers/​installers via phone for ordering a new SnugTop truck cap, Custom Road being one of them. Long story short, this place seems to have earned its crappy Unilocal rating. Their warehouse in Spring valley is a dump, I showed up 15 minutes prior to closing with $ 3100 in cash expecting to just get the order information in, since their quote was $ 100 less than another dealer/installer…and was turned away because «we are closed», one look around the shop I knew I would be wise to use another SnugTop dealer. I would not be fooled by their clean website like I was. I don’t expect the place to look like an operating room, but the people and place will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. I will pay $ 100 more and take my business elsewhere. Oh and most of their used caps look like they came off The Walking Dead film set, despite being labeled «mint» or «like new» condition on craigslist.

This is an update. My pop&lock handle broke, which sucks. But this is a somewhat known issue and is not Custom Roads fault.
I called down and they suggested i call the company directly to as for a warranty. I did and had the new part the next week. Custom road even emailed me the invoice in the next 15 mins.
Custom Road promised to install the part free of charge.

I’m not usually one to leave a negative review unless the experience was just bad. I saw a thousand ads on craigslist for camper shells and I checked out their website and saw they had 2 that would work on my truck that were the right color. I called earlier in the week to check prices and I was quoted $ 800 for one and $ 850 for the other. I go down there a few days later to check them out.
First impression on driving up on this place. holy ghetto and trashy. It’s a run down building, dirty and disorganized. I walked in the yard where they have some camper shells stacked up and 3 guys are sitting around «working». They completely ignore me and my wife. So I walk inside to find someone else. The counter is empty, I walk further around the store, everything is covered in dust, there is a random little girl on a tablet, and someone was in a small room and didn’t say anything when I said hello. So. I walk back outside. the 3 guys once again ignore us and then scamper off and pretend to be working.
I go back inside again (at this point I’m getting irritated) and finally there is a guy at the counter I can speak to. I tell him what I am looking for and he tells me they have some in the yard in the back and he will call someone to take me back there to look. I say ok and kind of stand around the shop looking at things waiting on him to make that call. It didn’t happen. he goes back to messing around doing whatever he was doing. Then he gets on the phone and is talking to another customer. ok. you could have just said. I’ll call someone to help you as soon as I’m off the phone with this customer I’m helping.
Finally a guy walks in and he tells him to help me. That guy didn’t not seem enthusiastic at all about having to help me and gave me the impression they didn’t have what I was looking for. He walks right by me without saying a word, and I’m supposed to follow him I guess. so I do. He leads us down a dirt alley, past what looked like a hispanic gang drinking 40’s next to their custom rice burners. Half a block later we reach the «yard in the back» and it looks like a small junk yard. Fork lift, broken glass everywhere. He takes me to the shell I wanted and it had hard plastic bed liners leaning against it. He moves those and I look at it. It’s got big chips of paint missing on the back corners, scratched. The brake light was yellowed and cracked, the black trim looked like it had sat out in the sun for 15 years. I couldn’t see much of the sides because there was so much crap around it. I could see the back and lift it up to see the inside. The inside was COVERED in spider webs.
I asked the guy about the 2^nd shell they were supposed to have in stock. He walked around the maze and mess and came back and couldn’t find it, or he pretended to look and didn’t want to find it. I didn’t bother to try to look myself. At this point I asked how much for the one covered in spiders and was told $ 750.
Needless to say I did NOT buy a camper shell from them. The whole experience was irritating and a waste of time. Had the customer service been better I might have considered it, cleaned off the spiders, ordered a new brake light and taken it home. but F that place. I’m going to look elsewhere for a place that doesn’t suck so bad.

Terrible place to do business, I talked to them over the phone about a used shell for my truck. They told me the shell was in mint condition and ready to be installed on truck so I get off work early and go down. As soon as I got there I saw the shell for my truck setting there and it had DEEP scratches and pits in it. The paint was fading on the corners too, so I go in to the office and talk to them about it and they told me they would buff it out… I went out while they are «buffing it» and their worker was sanding down bondo on the shell and then started spray painting it! Very poor craftsmanship and Very poor customer service. Stay very far away from this place.

We had a pretty good experience here.
We had been calling around for about 2 weeks looking for a used camper shell. Custom Road is over an hour away, but they were also the only place that had one in stock that fit our truck.
They close at 6, but they stayed almost 2 hours after closing to install the camper shell for us. They made sure the fit was snug, the doors closed and locked properly, and all electrical worked before we left.
The camper shell is used, but it’s in good condition and the prices were comparable to the other places we called.

I recently came to this place after seeing an ad posted on Craigslist about a soft cover for my truck bed. Decided to check this place out instead of calling.
So, I came in Monday. Asked about the cover and was given a price and had to leave a deposit (which was half of the full total) for the cover, and the manager told me the part would be in the next day (Tuesday).
After leaving, and on my way back to the freeway, the manager calls me and tells me the part won’t be in till Thursday. Which of course, was disappointing because I had work that day and had the day off the following day, when the part was originally supposed to be delivered.
Thursday comes around, and although I was at work, I didn’t get a missed call, nor a voicemail regarding whether my part had came in or not.
Friday comes around, and I had work at 4pm that day, so I called in at 10:30am to see if my part had came in. The guy who answered told me to call back in a hour, because the delivery truck should be there by then. Of course this caught me off guard, considering it was supposed to be there already. But whatever, I’ve already waited 4 days, what’s another hour? I called back a hour later and asked about my part, and the guy told me it’s there, but they’re busy and to come in at 2pm. I told the guy that I had work at 4pm and was inquiring about how long it’d take for the install. He said I should be okay.
I come in at 2pm, my truck part doesn’t get put into my truck till about 3:45pm, and right before the installer gets into my truck, I asked how long it was gonna take. He immediately starts yelling at me, telling me he doesn’t know, and then goes to the manager, where I of course am irritated, so I follow him there.
We go inside, and the manager tells me that his employee is just «nervous.» I told him that I just asked the installer a simple question about the length of the installation and he (the installer) starts yelling at me at the top of his lungs ranting about how he doesn’t know how long it’ll take. I told the manager, «as the installer, I would assume that he, of all people should know how long it would take.» Then continued to tell the manager, «I called this morning to ask about my part, you told me to call back in a hour. I call back in a hour, you tell me to come in at 2. I get here at 2, and my truck isn’t in the garage till 3. I ask the installer how long it’ll take because I have work at 4, and I get yelled at. Now I’m here in front of you, and all you can say is that he’s nervous?!» All the manager said was, «well take care of your truck, have a seat. It could take up to a hour.»
By this time, I’m just outraged. 30 minutes ago by, and they tell me my truck is done. I go to work, and come home, and the next day, I check out the quality of the work that was done and notice that not only did they scratch my truck, but the cover wasn’t even installed properly. I ended up having to take the entire thing off, and reinstall it. I really don’t like paying people for their labor if I just have to do it again myself, later.
In conclusion, I would never buy anything from this place, nor would I recommend anyone to come here. Definitely not worth the time and money spent here. Lesson learned!

SHADY. went here to look at a used shell, first off there was a tattooed, methy guy wandering around who’d lost his phone — that was a tip off. secondly the whole place reeked of cat piss maybe — it’s a dump. checked out the shell they’d «just gotten in stock» (when I called): filthy, seals were shot, window was pulling away from the shell. guy offered it to me for a good price with paint, but I could already smell a disaster. then he offers me another brand of shell, says he’ll get it new, throw in the hinged sliding window against the cab, headliner, paint and installation, no tax if I pay cash, for about ¾ the price of the quote for the top of the line shell from their dealer. I tell him «OK, sounds great — I’m gonna go read shell reviews online and get back to you» and he says «oh, you’re gonna go read the Unilocal reviews? don’t read those, our competitors write bad reviews from spite» (oh, really? think I’ll go read those Unilocal reviews then). so I go over to the dealer of another brand and ask them «heard of these guys?» and they say «well, I don’t want to talk bad about our competitors but we get a lot of their unhappy customers», and then kinda indicated the «new» shell the guy offered me might not be everything it seemed. seriously, I’ve met trial lawyers who seemed less shifty than this place — avoid, avoid, avoid. ended up going on to another place with good Unilocal reviews in north county who then took the time to comparatively price Snugtop, LEER, and ARE shells with similar options for me, and bought a shell from a dealer I’d trust.
just looked them up on BBB — rated D. AVOID.

This place is horrible! We called before driving all the way down to Spring Valley from Riverside to make sure they wanted to purchase our camper shell, they said yes. When we got there the gentleman behind the counter made us wait 30 minutes to (come back with an offer) and when we checked in with him he said. Oh I don’t want it… WHAT!!! What a waist of my time… Poooor customer service!

Waste of time. The used top I went there for was pretty trashed. It looked like most of the damage was from sloppy storage. Chipped corners and large areas of paint tore up, scratched off, especially on top and just places you wouldn’t expect from being on a vehicle. It looks great in their online photos though. It took 25 minutes for them to pull the top out of the yard to get a first look, and I was the only customer there. If you wanted to look at a few, you’d be there all day.
He was only willing to budge $ 50 on price due to the condition. They need to be more upfront in their ad description.
The poster below said they stack them on 2x4s. this is the case for the junky shells, but it looks like the more $$ ones are stored on racks, at least the ones you can see in front. But they still manage to damage them.
They advertise craiglist a lot but they have more stuff on their website. In fact, I’ll give it two stars just because their website is better than the competition.

Wow, I am the owner of a Car Dealership in El Cajon, and I had a nice Silverado 2500 that I figured would look great with a new Rugged Liner in the back.
I give these guys a call and they say «$ 159 installed for the rugged liner, and another better brand for the same price». I called twice to ask if they had it there, and they said yes both times. I go in and wait for 30 minutes while they are «getting it from the back», I get no response. I get up and ask one of the employees where it is, and he says «let me ask the owner», and the owner comes out and says «sorry we dont have them in stock, the only we have is for the new years. I pretty much left after that. If i hadnt asked, I would of been there until closing waiting for the bed liner

not impressed. I would not let them work on a newer vehicle. if you are only concerned with functionality, and are looking for a bargain, then this place might be okay. otherwise, recommend going elsewhere. the layout of the place is a nightmare, and the workers are not friendly.

I read the other reviews, and thought I’d try my luck.
I was looking for a used camper shell for my tundra. I called, and spoke about them to Alfonso. He mentioned one shell was in great shape with the other being a bit older. Prices were decent at $ 695 and $ 795 (even though the craigs list ad said $ 750 — which I reminded Alfonso!) When I actually arrived, I walked the yard with Adam and he had a hard time finding them. He said they had just shut down Chula Vista location and were full from that stores stock. Once we found the shells, the «older» one was… well… OLD. Not even worth putting on my 2005 vehicle. I’d have passed, even if it was FREE. So I wasn’t too hopeful on the second ‘nicer’ one or per the craigs list ad «great condition». The nicer shell, was in serious despair. It had spider cracks all along one side, both side windows were siliconed in (and the silicone was never cleaned off the shell — looks like a 2^nd grader did it) and it was severely scratched. Maybe due to the fact they stack shells ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER and separate them with 2x4s (no felt or carpet padding between them).
Sadly, I walked away without a shell. However, not after Adam tried to sell me on a new Vision Shell. I wasn’t too eager to place my order. I’ll shop somewhere else.
It’s not worth even one star, as it wasted my 2−3hrs in my day.

I’ve bought a used rack and two new shells from these guys. Have to say I am surprised by the other reviews. I have always had good service and the staff has always been pleasant and informative.

Crap hole… don’t waste your time. poor customer service at best. They sell cheep crap and it way over priced.

This business has lots of used shells, but they are overall in poor condition. Most of them are stored down a dirt alley, stacked on top of each other, in a fenced lot. Little, if any, care is taken to keep them from being further damaged.
They advertise their shells extensively on Craiglist and indicate that they are in great condition. They also tell you the same on the phone. When you drive down there, however, (2 hours in my case), you find that they range from pretty bad to really bad. Furthermore, they will negotiate very little on the price. They want top dollar, considering how bad these shells are.
To compound the issues, the place is very unorganized. No one seems to know what they have or where things are. Then, they will disappear in the middle of helping you.
Despite all that, there were several people there, buying shells. I guess they didn’t care about condition.
My advice: save yourself a trip to Custom Road.
