Situated in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley in historic Staunton, Virginia, the 300-seat Blackfriars Playhouse — the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theater — opened its doors in September 2001 and has already delighted tens of thousands of enthusiastic audience members from around the world. The product of years of research, this unique, historically-accurate space provides the perfect backdrop for the ASC’s hilarious, year-round performances done in Shakespeare’s staging conditions.
History
Established in 1988.
The American Shakespeare Center began as the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, a touring company founded by James Madison University professor Ralph Alan Cohen and James Madison University student Jim Warren. After years of touring, Shenandoah Shakespeare built the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre, the Blackfriars Playhouse in 2001, and has been at home in Staunton ever since.
