Disappointed that they’re closed because of hurricane sandy and they don’t have plans to reopen after the hurricane. this was the only steakhouse around with amazing prices. Just think about it at a lunch special you were able to get: an entrée, veggie of day, side, soup, and dessert all for $ 10! Even at normal prices a skirt steak is only $ 15 for a single cut and $ 20 for double cut! I haven’t visited any of the other locations but I’d love to after the closing of this one.

WOW!!! I wish we had found J&R’s earlier. Great food, great service and the great prices didn’t hurt.

After a full day of school clothes shopping at Tanger with my family and my sister in laws family, I have everyone screaming«we’re hungry»! Where else can you go to eat a marinated steak with a potato for about $ 15 bucks? Kids aren’t free on Saturdays but they have grilled cheese and chicken fingers that are under $ 10 bucks. My 12 year old niece was craving a huge plate of ribs, It was funny to see her almost knock out the entire plate. Of course, Hofbrau on tab for me. I noticed there was a pot roast special? Yum. Next time J & Rs. It’s a Long Island thing

Great Steaks and selections for it’s price. Probably not the best tasting Steak You ever have, but definitely decent. Wouldn’t mind to drive 40 mins to get there. Just like other viewers, the service can be a hit or miss. Serive is very important to me six days a week, the other day I’ll choice to eat at home. ;)

J & R’s is a regular steakhouse that’s family friendly. Great for groups and parties, but if you want to have an intimate dinner with another person, it ain’t happening here. The food was good, especially the chili, i just wish their sides were bigger in portions. A baked potato was just thrown on my plate with a few carrots around it. Prices were reasonable for a steak house and they have a special where you eat a huge steak and you get it for free and a picture on the wall. It’s not on the menu, you have to ask for it.

I hate the pickles they give you before your meal. They’re more like cucumbers that are not quite there yet. Otherwise, this place has cheap steak specials– perfect for a student(Stony Brook University is right there). It’s definitely not your fancy schmancy steakhouse, but I never minded that at all. I used to come here almost every single week to get my steak fix. The waiters are friendly and the steak sauce is amazing(sweet and tangy). I loved coming here on Thursdays to get their 24oz steak special! But even on regular days, a $ 15 medium steak with a baked sweet potato and a side of salad or soup is still awesome in my book.

My visit to J&R’s this past weekend was more of a nostalgic trip down memory lane. As a Stony Brook Alum, we frequented J&R’s on a regular basis for special occasions. Everything was as I remembered it(which is also a bit scary considered it’s been about 8 years since I’ve been there). It is still a well-oiled machine serving up delicious, inexpensive food. BF and I shared the 24oz marinated steak, with a side order sweet potato and creamed spinach. The steak was cooked perfectly as requested(medium rare) and complemented perfectly by their steak sauce. Their creamed spinach was also as I remembered it(which also started me on my love affair with creamed spinach at steakhouses) and the sweet potato came served with this cinnamon sugar spread which made us not need dessert after dinner! Overall I was please with my little trip down memory lane and hope that it’s not another 10 years before I stop by again :)

I went to school around there, and J & R’s is definitely a good place to go if you want good steak at a cheap price. They have a lot of specials and are very affordable and you will not leave hungry. The service can be a hit or miss, I’ve gotten really rude waiters and also friendly waiters, so it really depends on your luck. The menu is your typical steakhouse menu, steak, chicken, some seafood. They have a bar with a pretty extensive selection of beer and liquor. They have a really big dining room, with two back rooms that can be closed off for parties. The décor is outdated and definitely needs a modern update to the place. To start, the waiters will bring you a small loaf of pumpernickel bread and a big bowl of macaroni salad and pickles. The bread is always fresh and warm and the salad is pretty good too. I usually go for the 24 oz. steak or the prime rib. They come with your choice of soup or salad, your choice of potato(mashed, baked, fries, or sweet potato fries) and a side of vegetables. You can also get other sides like cream of spinach, sautéed mushrooms, etc. Both the prime rib and steak are under 20 $, TALKABOUT A DEAL!!! I ordered the 24 oz. steak, marinated, medium rare, ANDITWASDELICIOUS! I ordered the salad this time, but if you like the soup, I would recommend getting the lobster bisque. The salad is your typical romaine greens with onions and tomatoes and cucumbers, with whatever dressing you like. I like the caesar salad better. They also have their own steak sauce, and it taste exactly like peter luger’s steak sauce. The fries are hand cut fries and are always great. The mashed potatoes are also very good, I haven’t got a chance to try their sweet potato fries yet. The veggies are just steamed zucchini with some carrots and cauliflower, very plain. If you are craving a good piece of meat but don’t want to pay an arm or a leg for it, I would come to J&R’s.

Steaks. J&R has multiple locations and I have been trying to get to them all apparently… this is located in a ridiculously busy area by Smithhaven Mall and to make it even worse, the entrance is not exactly easy to find from the road as the restaurant is tucked back into a shopping center. The dining room is off to the right but I hit the bar area. The place was somewhat messy — looked like a lot of partying had just gone down there but overall the bar area looked dingy and in need of a facelift. The bartender was very good — once she realized I was sitting there. The menu is pretty extensive and centered on steaks(of course). There are other items for the non-meat eaters but I went with steak, salad and potatoes — I was in the mood for a good piece of meat. The filet I had was good. Cooked a little under what I was looking for but not too terribly wrong. Veggies were ok, potato seemed a bit old — like it had been sitting in the warmer all day. I know it is not easy to get baked potatoes cooked to order but I would think a steak house would have that under control. All in all decent meal for the money, somewhat shabby bar atmosphere but a really nice bartender — a solid 3-stars. Parking around the place.

Before talking about what J&R’s is, I think it’s important to address what J&R’s is not. J&R’s steakhouse is NOT: –Peter Luger, Smith & Wollensky, Rothmann’s, or any other high end steakhouse –fancy –pretentious –expensive If you’re the type to turn your nose up at anything less than a four star restaurant, look somewhere else. J&R’s is the everyman’s steakhouse, with a casual relaxed atmosphere that’s paired with generous portions of great tasting steaks & sides at very reasonable prices. Go to a «premium» steakhouse, order a 24oz ribeye, soup or salad & two sides — see what it costs you… or, get over yourself, come here & have it all for $ 19.99(definitely recommend you get yours marinated, it’s terrific) Is J&R’s the perfect restaurant? No, far from it. Have there been less than superb meals? Yup, but that can happen anywhere. Bottomline, there’s a reason my family has been eating here regularly for almost 20 years. You will get a quality meal at a more than reasonable price from a local family owned establishment rather than the other cookie cutter bs that clutters this area. So relax, enjoy and for god sakes loosen your belt — you’re gonna need the extra room!

Just came back from having their Ocktoerfest Lunch special. It was special alright, if you like lukewarm soup. Followed by a lukewarm assembly line placed Sauerbraten, red cabbage, and potato dumpling. Not even a courtesy 15 sec zap in the microwave. The only thing that was forgiving was the seltzer with lemon. BTW it didn’t come with tea and dessert like the other non Ocktoberfest food. For 9.99 a local deli could have served up a better and meaningful lunch. I got burned for being adventurous and open minded about trying new foods. Never again. Also their prime rib(dinner time) has a smell that’s just not right. If they are touting grass fed cattle then I retract the statement previous.

I do not understand the negative reviews. True the service, décor, and atmosphere is not 5 star, ultra classy, but you get a steak that would cost twice as much anywhere else and it is served with generous portions of sides. What do people expect? Peter Lugar’s it ain’t, but your 4 steaks will cost less than 1 at any of the premium steak houses. There is also very kid friendly options and plenty of things on the menu besides steak. Do not take your date here stupid, do take the family, your buddys and your kids and you will get a good meal and have money left in your pocket.

A very casual(emphasis on the ‘casual’) dining establishment. It’s one of those places that if you’re craving a steak, you take a friend or two there to grab lunch or dinner. The first time I came here, what I ordered BLEW my mind. It was deliciousss. The second time — not so much. My steak was a little undercooked, and somewhat tasteless… almost sub-par. What’s going on?!(Maybe it’s the time of day, or the cooks are just tired?) The service is good. Most of the waiters are nice, and the bussers are very attentive. Prices are also very good relative to what you get :)

I am not sure why the hotel front desk recommended this place like it was the town attraction. The food was just alright, and the atmosphere was honestly a little frightening. I couldn’t help but feel i was in a Nebraska town with a population of 10, eating next to Cleetus who was about to roll over from a heart attack. The bowl of cold macaroni with a pickle on top, served immediately after i sat down was cause for more amusement than salivation. The rest of the sides and salads were sub-par. On the bright side, the beer was cold and tasty. My server was also friendly and put up with my comments that were meant to be friendly jokes, but were probably taken as insults to the food. Specifically, insults to the pickle on my macaroni. I took a bite of the pickle because i felt bad that i had disrespected the dish. Cheap food— you get what you pay for.

What has happened to this place. I used to think it was really good. The only thing I enjoy there is just the T-bone steak or the Porterhouse steak. All else is not worth it. Salads are the next best items on the list. Me and my wife never get our steaks cook properly. She likes it rare I like it med. I always get it rare and she gets in med-well. Times must be changing as places in the past that was so damn good and now is just ok Just get the steak and salads. All else is not worth it.

One of my favorite places to eat while attending Stony Brook! The marinated t-bone is awesome. The price is extremely cheap for a 24oz t-bone. Although I remember a time when the wings were 19 cents. Now they’re 49 cents I think. The wait can be up to 30 – 60 minutes on a busy night but if you make a reservation, you’ll be seated in 5 minutes. The service can be a little slow at times but they dole out some pickles, pasta, and bread to keep you preoccupied. But once that steak arrives, its an all out eating frenzy. Knives are slicing through beautifully cooked steak and the smile on everyone’s faces makes it all worth while. Once the food coma sets in, its time to pay the check.

OMGoSh, this is such a long long long overdue post! Anyway, my cousin brought me to J & R’s a few years ago when she was still taking classes in Stony Brook. She highly recommended their steak and so I ordered one and to my surprise, I was able to finish the entire steak! I am not a big steak eater and if I were able to finish a whole one, it really meant that it was that good. Pricewise, the steak was not expensive and qualitywise, the steak was VERYJUICY! Moreover, I really miss their Lobster Bisque Soup! OH Cousin, if you are reading this, please bring me back to J & R’s!!!

J&R’s Steak House is great. The steaks made here are just delightful. Their own steak sauce goes along with it so well too. The service here can suck at times but the food always comes out good. Food — Steaks, burgers, baby back ribs, prime rib, what more can I say? The food here is simply amazing. They start you off with some pickles, macaroni salad, and some warm bread. Their lobster bisque is awesome. There are daily lunch and dinner specials which makes this place even better. For many places that have specials, it kinda implies that their business sucks. But this place, their specials rock. And if you really love steak, take on their 76 oz. steak challenge. If you manage to finish within the hour, its on the house and your picture will be taken. Drinks — Soda and typical beers. Just stick with water or soda when you’re here. Even the waitress told me the beers here are a bit expensive and suggested that I should get beer at 7 – 11 instead. Service — Unpredictable. If you get a old fart serving you, obviously you’re gonna get your shit slow. The staff could try to be a little bit more lively. I feel like I’m talking to a bunch of deadbeats whenever I’m there. Verdict — Definitely a place to stop by if your in Stony Brook. Despite what I said about the beer price and service, just come here simply for its food. It’s well worth it. It’s not a pricey place unless you lose the steak challenge.

For a chain restaurant compared to the likes of outback, fridays, applebees, their steak here is pretty decent. Prices are also very affordable with very generous quantity. I got the tbone and ½ rack of ribs. The tbone was as expected. The filet part was quite tender while the ny strip part was just so so. The ribs were dry and not tasty. but the sweet potato fries and dessert(brownie sundae) were good. Drinks here like margaritas and daiquairis r pretty bleh. It might seem after reading this you would think Id give it a score lower than 3 stars. But I am rating based upon the quality cut of the meat alone and how well it was cooked; since its a steakhouse.
